BALI THE RIGHT WAY
Gday again punters and welcome to another week of Bali”s
Premier Weekly Newspaper. Its been a good week and I was even
invited out to dinner to say goodbye to a very good Balinese friend who
was leaving the island for the next year to work in the carribean as a
chef, and thinking this was a great idea in so far as needing a reason to
destroy a few little green bottles, accepted without hesitation. I find it
funny that we all come here and want to stay, and so many locals want
Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com to leave and work off-shore, anyway.
First I needed the obligatory shower and clean up ready for the
occasion, then I chose a nice crisp shirt and my best shorts and shoes to complete a standard dinner outfit
for Bali. Now, for the most of the afternoon the skys had been threatening rain and a few quick showers had
fallen but nothing really heavy, so with a nice sunny sky above, I got on my bike and headed into town. For
the first part of the 20 minute ride I bopped along the bypass in slightly heavy traffic making my way towards
the airport when a few rain drops started to fall. I thought Naaaa this will blow over, and kept cruising
towards Kuta, and within one minute the skys opened up and the rain came down so hard that the traffic
almost stopped. With this almost every bike on the road pulled over to the roadside to chuck the rain poncho
on, myself included.
I have jumped off the bike and opened up the seat, and in my hast dropped the poncho on the road
into the torren of water below, great. By this time I questioned why I even bothered stopping to put the thin
plastic cape on as I was pretty well soaked, but, thought its gotta help. So as quickly as I could, pulled it over
my head. The situation got worst straight up as when I pulled it on somehow the left shoulder ripped apart
leaving a large opening down my left side. Back on the bike and head on.
With the rain you will notice that most people in cars seem to slow down to a crawl, as they cannot
see because of the rain, or it could be that the car will dissolve if it drives through a puddle, who knows. This
causes the bikes to be slowed down etc etc turning a 20 minute trip into a 40 minute trip. I have travelled
another 300 metres and the rain is getting heavyer with the road now 300mm deep in lovely brownish grey
water splashing up over the bike filling my shoes. Ive made it to the lights and looked at he big digital sign
which tells me I must sit here in the pissing rain for the next 96 seconds till the lights go green and I can
continue on, So you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out that, by the time I got to the pub for dinner,
I was completely soaked taking about 12 beers to dry out. Needless to say, a great night was had by all and
life goes on as usual. Anxious wait for UK retiree after posting £1M
My point is this, every year the wet season comes with a bang, and sometimes rather suddenlly
