Overview

Nanotechnology relates to the production, research and use of extremely small structures. One ten
thousandth of the thickness of one human hair, the nanometer scale is the scale of single atoms and tiny
molecules.

The ability to utilize materials on the atomic level and the use of the unique phenomena that occur on that
small scale, give a huge amount of possibilities for almost every field, for example energy and
conservation technology, Electronics and telecommunications, medicine and pharmaceutical industries.
On an atomic level, there are no borders between chemistry, biology and physics. It all comes together
into interdisciplinary technology, that means no demarcation for lots of branches.

The Growing Influence of Nanotechnology

Nanoparticles exist in nature. For example, milk contains nanoscale droplets of fat and every cell in your
body relies on nano sized protein complexes to function.

The worldwide transition towards the greater use of nanotechnologies is happening at an even greater
pace.

The global market in nano-enabled products is expected to grow from $2.3 billion in 2007 to $81 billion
by 2015.

Foods that contain nanoscale structures have been a part of our traditional diet for a very long time
without us thinking of them as such. In recent years, powerful microscopy techniques have revealed that
the familiar properties of foods such as ice cream, milk and cheese are the result of specific arrangements
of their natural components – water, fats and proteins – that exist at the nanoscale.

By using nanoscience to understand how these nanostructures contribute to the properties of food, food
producers can develop innovative ways of making similar products from different ingredients, for
example by removing most of the fat from ice cream without losing the smooth and creamy texture that
consumers expect from that type of product.

Percenta Nanotechnology Surface Coatings

The nano sealant /coatings are a water or alcohol base solution that contain nano-scale self-organizing
anti-adhesion components or ’ nanos’ which form an invisible coating or barrier on the surface. The
resulting coating is only a few tens of nano-meters thick.

The coating does not alter the ‘look-and-feel’ of the surface and it remains breathable even after coating.
The coating can impart various properties to the surface, however the key benefit of the coating is that
they make the surface ‘Easy-To-Clean’ and prevent them from elements like dirt, fungus, lichen, algae,
moss , liquids etc .

The Technology

On the atomic scale used for ultra-thin coatings, the quantum effect (quantum refers to the smallest
amount of a physical quantity) or the quantum mechanics (mechanics based on quantum theory) are of
high significance. The nano structures enable surfaces to become extremely resilient with long protection
against corrosion and a high sliding ability.

When molecules that normally bustle about unorganized in materials are structured in a way that each
atom stay where it should be, the impossible becomes possible. Nanotechnology manipulates molecules
through current, magnetism or chemistry, so that they organize themselves. Materials attain new and

On Smooth and Non-absorbent surfaces such as glass, ceramic, granite, marble etc. nano particles
combine with the surface, so liquids are repelled taking contaminants with them. It prevents bacteria from
making a firm bond with the surface making them easy to wash off.

With porous surfaces, the nano particles fill up the pores from the inside. Fungus, lichen, algae and moss
(inside and outside) can no longer adhere to the surface. Dirt and liquids can't get into the surface
anymore and are simply repelled.

On textiles (natural and synthetic fibers), the fiber are surrounded with the coating preventing dampness
and dirt from getting through the fiber and are simply repelled. The treated textiles are completely
harmless to skin.

High Degree of Cleanliness without the use of Harmful Chemicals

A variety of human and animal studies have linked chemicals common in cleaning products with a wide
range of health risks. Detergents, degreasers, stain removers and pesticides contain hazardous chemicals
that endanger the environment by contaminating our groundwater, lakes and oceans. If these hazardous
products are ingested, absorbed through the skin or inhaled they can cause illness that may only appear
years later. .

The following are some of the most common cleaning products and chemicals we use regularly and the
harmful effect they have:
• AIR FRESHENERS: interfere with our ability to smell. Known toxic chemicals found in
an air freshener are formaldehyde, a highly toxic, known carcinogen, and phenol. When
phenol touches the skin it can cause it to swell, burn, peel, and break out in hives.
• AMMONIA: is a very volatile chemical and is very damaging to your eyes, respiratory
tract and skin.
• ANTIBACTERIAL CLEANERS: may contain triclosan, which is absorbed through the
skin and can be tied to liver damage.
• BLEACH: is a strong corrosive. It will irritate or burn the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.
It may cause pulmonary edema or vomiting and coma if ingested.
• CARPET AND UPHOLSTERY SHAMPOO: Most formulas are designed to over power
the stain itself; and contains highly toxic substances. Some include perchlorethylene, a
known carcinogen that damages liver, kidney and nervous system; and ammonium
hydroxide, a corrosive, extremely irritable to eyes, skin and respiratory passages.
• CHLORINE: Chlorine is the number one cause of breast cancer and can be lethal.
Scientists won't handle chlorine without protective gloves, facemasks, and ventilation, yet
it is in most store-brand cleaners, including dishwasher detergents. The harmful effects
are intensified when the fumes are heated, as in the shower. It ís in our drinking water,
swimming pools, Jacuzzis, and more.
• DISHWASHER DETERGENTS: Most products contain chlorine in a dry form that is
highly concentrated. They are the primary cause of household poisoning in dish detergent.
• FURNITURE POLISH: contain petroleum distillates, which are highly flammable and
can cause skin and lung cancer. They contain nitrobenzene, which is easily absorbed
through the skin and extremely toxic.
• LAUNDRY ROOM PRODUCTS: Laundry detergents contain phosphorus, enzymes,
ammonia, naphthalene, phenol, sodium nitilotriacetate and countless other chemicals.
These substances can cause rashes, itches, allergies, sinus problems and more. The
residue left on your clothes, bed sheets, etc. is absorbed through your skin, as is
everything else you touch.
• OVEN CLEANER: one of the most toxic products people use. They contain lye and
ammonia, which eat the skin, and the fumes linger and affect the respiratory system. Then
there ís the residue that ís intensified the next time you turn your oven on.

• TOILET BOWL CLEANERS: usually contain hydrochloric acid, a highly corrosive

irritant to both skin and eyes that damages kidneys and liver; and hypochlorite bleach, a
corrosive irritant that can burn eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Toilet bowl cleaners also
may cause pulmonary edema, vomiting or coma if ingested. Contact with other chemicals
may cause chlorine fumes which may be fatal.

Nanotechnology based sealants provides a viable and more effective alternative to these chemicals.
Percenta nanotechnology products are free from harmful chemicals and provide long lasting protection

Specialised sealants are coated on ceramic bowls, floors. Mirrors, tap fittings, shower cubicles and so on.
The sealant forms an invisible protective layer which repels impurities including micro organisms.

Care of Nano coated surface

With time surfactants from the cleaning liquids will get deposited on the surface which will reduce the
Easy-To-Clean effect as they will cover the nano coating. The Easy-To-clean effect can be restored by
cleaning the surfactants off the surface. Cleaning the nano-coated surface with Percenta Cure-All Cleaner
will wash the surfactants and other such substances off the surface and refresh the Nano-Coating restoring
its effect. Nano coated surface should be cleaned with Cure-All cleaner once a month.

Breaking the chain of Infection

Development of an infection is dependent upon an uninterrupted process, referred to as – chain of

infection. This process is dependent upon the following elements:
• Pathogens in sufficient numbers
• a reservoir for pathogen growth
• a portal of exit from the reservoir
• a mode of transmission
• a portal of entry to the host, and
• a susceptible host

In a commercial office settings, wash room surfaces, door handles, commonly used equipments such as
copiers and printers, can all act as reservoirs for pathogens. By treating these surfaces with Percenta
Nanotechnology Coatings, micro organisms are unable to thrive on these surfaces and are easily removed.
Nanotechnology based anti microbial hand spray and surface cleaners from Percenta will neutralize
bacteria, including HIV, HBV, HCV, BVDV, H5N1, H1NI and SARS-CoV. Applied surfaces remains
protected for up to 5 days.

Durability, Efficiency and Cost Savings

One of main advantage of Nano coatings is very less amount of the coatings material required .Though
applied in small quantities their effect on the surface is long lasting.

Small Quantities of Sealants will do the job

For most surfaces, the recommended quantity of nano sealant range from 10 to 40 ml per square meter.
Recommended Coating Amount for some of the coatings are the following:
•Multi CS Foam: 10 to 25 ml per m²
•Windows (SR): 10 to 25 ml per m²
•Smooth stone: about 50 ml per m²
•Glass & Ceramics: 10 to 25 ml per m²
•Synthetic materials: 10 to 25 ml per m²
•Chrome & Stainless steel: 10 to 25 ml per m²
•Wood & Stone: porous stone 100 to 150 ml per m²
•Slightly and non absorbent surfaces: 10 to 20 ml per m²
•Textile & Leather: 10 to 100 ml depending on absorbency
•Concrete & Flooring: absorbent surfaces: 100 to 250 ml per m²

High Durability

Durability of our products ranges from a few months to 10 years. The durability of a seal is dependent on
several factors, such as the detergents used, frequency of cleaning intervals and the mechanical stress or
abrasion. Surfactants in detergents, strong mechanical abrasion and soaps affect the durability.
All products are continually researched and enhanced the below details are only guidelines.
Expected durability of some of the sealants are as follows:

•Smooth stone: 2 to 5 years

•Multi CS Foam: 6 to 10 months
•Glass & Ceramics: up to 2 years
•Synthetic materials: up to two years
•Concrete & Flooring: 10 years or more
•Chrome & Stainless steel: up to 2 years
•Wood & Stone: porous stone 5 to 10 years

•Windows (SR): 2 to 3 years (depending on weather conditions)

•Textile & Leather: about 15 washes up to 40 degrees Celsius (no surfactants used)

Cost Savings

As the coated surface remains easy-to- clean to a high standard, the use of surfactants can be avoided in
day to day cleaning. The numbers of different products to conduct cleaning is reduced and in most cases
just water and bush or wipe is only needed as contaminants including bacteria can be washed off. The
cleaning time and effort are vastly reduced and more importantly the amount of water required for
cleaning is reduced and helps to save water.
There is greater cost saving by minimal use of chemical cleaning products , reduction in use of water and
cleaning time.
