data to be transmitted a distance d=1,000 Km. Assume NAK messages contain 100 bits and that is
the event of a collision the average waiting time pair to retransmission is 50 µs.
a) Calculate delay as a function of ρ.
b) Plot D vs ρ.

Q2 500 users employ TDMA to transmit 1000 bit packets of data. The channel bandwidth is 100
MHz and QPSK is employed.
a) What is the max is the maximum allowable bit rate in the channel?
b) What is the packet rate?
c) What is the frame time – the time taken to transmit the packet from each user?

Q3
a) Plot the throughput for CSMA as given by eq 16.4.35 as a function of TD/ TP for ρ = 0.25.
b) At what value of TD/ TP , would slotted ALOHA field a higher throughput?

Q4 Assuming that packet transmission and retransmission can both be described as a Poisson
process. Calculate the probability that a data packet transmission in slotted ALOHA system will
experience a collision with one other user. Assume that the total traffic rate λ = 10 packets/sec, T p
= 10 ms.

Q5 Measurements of a slotted ALOHA channel shows that 20% of the slots are idle.
a) What is the normalized total traffic in the channel?
b) What is the normalized throughput?

Q6 A TDMA system operates at 100 Mb/s with a 2ms frame time. Assume that all slots are of
equal length and that a guard time of 1µs is required between slots.
a) Compute the efficiency of the communication source for the case of 1, 10, and 100 slots per
frame.
b) Repeat above plot a) assuming that a 100 bit preamble is required at the start of each slot. Compute
efficiency of communication source.

Q7 6000 stations are competing for the use of a single slotted ALOHA channel. The average
station makes 30 request/hour, where each request is for 500 µs duration. Calculate the normalized
total traffic on the channel.

Q8 A group of slotted ALOHA station generate a total of 120 requests/sec, including both
transmissions and retransmissions. Each request is for 12.5 ms duration slot.
a) What is the normalized total traffic of the channel?
b) What is the probability of a successful transmission at the first attempt?
c) What is the probability of exactly two collisions before a successful transmission?

Q9 What is the maximum data rate at which a user can send data in a CSMA/CD network? Given
the channel is a coaxial cable with velocity of transmission 200 m/sec. The length of the cable is 1
km and packet size is 100 bits.

Q10 Normalized throughput ρ is a measure of channel utilization. It can be found by forming the
ratio of successful transmitted message traffic is in bits per sec to the total message traffic
including rejected messages in bits/sec. Calculate the normalized throughput of a channel that has a
maximum data rate of fb=50 kbits/sec and operates with k=5 ground stations, each station transmits
at average rate λ=2 packets/sec. The system format provides b=1350 bits/packet. Which of two
ALOHA, slotted ALOHA is suitable for this system?

Q11 The bit rate of a CDMA cellular system is 9.6 Kb/s and the chipping rate is 9.6 Mb/s . How
many simultaneous users can be accommodated with in the cell with BER=10-2 threshold
performance is accepted for voice quality mobile telephone systems and if it is assumed that the
self interference cost BER has to be an order of magnitude lower that is BER=10 -3? Note that in
this implementation a quadrature binary modulation structure is used.

Q12 How much is the interference rejection of the BPSK DS-SS if fb=10 kbits/sec and fc=2 Mbits/
sec? How much is the BER of this SS system if the practical BPSK modulation has 1db
degradation from ideal performance?
a) Assume that 11 equal power independent DS-SS signal occupy the same RF BW and E b/
No=25db are noise is required in such a high Eb/No system
b) Assuming three independent equal power DS-SS signals and available Eb/No =12 db

Q13 A message is transmitted at a bit rate of 9.6 kbits/sec using DS-SS. The clock rate of the code
sequence is 512 Mb/s. The receiver reference carrier is off by 12 degrees (phase error in PLL) and
code synchronization error in time is 30%. The received signal power is 2.3x10 -14W and the one
sided noise density (No) at the receiver input is 10-15W/Hz.
i) Find the SNR at receiver output in dB?
ii) What is the maximum obtainable (SNR)o dB?
iii) Find the synchronization error that would reduce (SNR)o by 1.5 dB when carrier phase
coherence has been achieved (PLL in phase –no phase error)

Q14 How much is the average P e of a FH-SS system of 1000 frequency hops (frequencies) are
available and the interference power of single tone jammer measured at the receiver exceeds the
received carrier power with the desired frequencies by 4 dB? Assume a) that one chip per bit is
used b) three chips (hops) per information bit are transmitted, and that a majority decision decoding
receiver algorithm is which with two out of three chips being correct lead to the right decision is
implemented.
