JSPL's CSR strategy includes:

• Development of model villages

(Adarsh Grams)
• Government, corporate and public
participation

• Address situational needs and

demands of the villagers

JSPL through its many initiatives has touched and improved the lives of millions
of people who are socially deprived. The Company has from the very beginning devoted
itself entirely to the cause of the upliftment of backward areas of the country. Some of
the initiatives taken are:

Supporting the under-privileged

A corporate with a social conscience, JSPL is forever working towards forming a
better society. Today, JSPL is the largest private sector investor in the state of
Chhattisgarh and focuses on the development of its basic infrastructure. The Company
has taken up a number of programmes to improve the lives of the underprivileged.
Raigarh, a tribal district in Chhattisgarh, is one such example.
To bring about a positive difference, JSPL has
adopted around 40 villages and contributes to the
development of the region through a more holistic
effort. Amenities such as a hospital, school, musical
fountain, auditorium, etc. built here offer a better
lifestyle. The people of these areas are supported
through various community-building exercises
ranging from providing sewage and sanitation
facilities to building and maintaining roads and
parks.
Apart from organizing social welfare activities in Raigarh, JSPL also works in different
areas of Odisha (Angul) and Jharkhand (Patratu) where the company has set up its
plants.
JSPL's CSR strategy includes:

Water pollution is a major environmental concern today that adversely affects

the surroundings, causing serious injury to the environment as well as human health. At
JSPL, water pollution is controlled by following a range of stringent regulatory
measures and monitoring processes. The company has attained ‘Zero Discharge’ status
by adopting state-of-the-art technology for water treatment. As per the guidelines of
CREP, a 4.3 – 4.9 m3 per T of long product is currently being used by JSPL.

Some of the measures, which have been

implemented for effective control of water
pollution, are as follows:
• Coke Oven Quenching: The waste water generated
during quenching is taken to settling tanks. After
settling, the water is reused for quenching.
• Sinter plant: Blow-down water is used in sinter
nodulizing.
• Blast furnace: Dust laden waste water is treated in effluent treatment plants and
the treated water is recycled back to the process.
• SMS: The waste water is taken to a settling tank and the outlet water of the tank
is reused. The blow-down water is used in slag granulation.
• Rolling mill: Process waste water is skimmed for oil and scale and then recycled
back to the plant. No wastewater is discharged.
• DRI: Cooling close-circuit effluent-recycling system has been installed. Waste
water from the cooling section is taken to a hot water well and then to the cooling
tower and the cold water well, from where it is recycled back into the process.
• Power Plant: DM plant wastewater is treated in the neutralization pit. After
treatment, the water is reused for wet ash handling system.
• Submerged Arc Furnace: Waste water is reused for slag cooling and dust
suppression.
• Sewage Treatment Plants (STP): Three sewage treatment plants have been
installed. The treated water is reused in the development of greenery.
• Garage, DG Set & Compressor Houses: Oil separators have been provided.
Clean water is further treated in the STP.
JSPL's CSR strategy includes:
Jindal Steel & Power Limited is deeply passionate about maintaining a clean and
green environment in & around its plants. Air pollution is one of the major challenges
that any company has to overcome in order to adhere to environmental norms. Keeping
this in mind, JSPL follows a procedure of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) for the
prevention of Air Pollution. Every aspect of pollution generated due to plant activities is
monitored in detail and adequate steps are taken to minimize it. The company has
installed the latest technical devices suitable for the purpose of reducing atmospheric
pollution. Functionalities of these devices are in turn, checked by Opacity Meters. The
levels of pollutants in Flue Gas and Ambient Air are continuously monitored through
automated devices such as Opacity Meters and Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
Stations (AAQMS).

Some of the air pollution measures (unit wise) adopted by JSPL

are as follows:
• Coke Oven Plant: Waste gases are burnt completely and the heat generated is
used in Waste Heat Recovery Boilers (WHRB) for power generation.
• Sinter Plant: A centralized de-dusting system with an Electrostatic Precipitator
is installed for dust control in the raw material handling area. High capacity ESP also
exists to control process emissions.
• Blast Furnace: The blast furnace is cleaned through cyclone and two-stage
venturi scrubber (Gas Cleaning Plant). Pulse jet and invertible bag filters have been
installed for controlling the emission from the stock house and junction points.
• SMS (EAF & Ladle Furnace): The gases are sucked through the Fume
Extraction System and taken to After Combustion Chamber for converting CO to
CO2. Thereafter, the gases are passed through a cooling system, forced draft cooler,
spark arrester to control coarse dust and subsequently through high efficiency bag
filters to separate particulates.
• DRI Kilns: Dust Settling Chambers and ESPs (Electrostatic Precipitators) have
been installed to control process emissions. Fugitive dust is controlled through
multiple point suction hoods attached to bag filters.
• Power Plant: The flue gas from boilers is passed through ESP’s and discharged
through stack.
• SAF: The emissions from the furnace are drawn in to high capacity dust
extraction system, where the particulates are trapped and treated gas is passed
through chimney.
• Other fugitive emissions: The fugitive emissions caused through non-process
activities such as haul roads and stockyards are managed through good housekeeping
practices and regular dust suppression through water sprinkling.
JSPL's CSR strategy includes:

As JSPL continues to expand its business on both the domestic and international fronts,

worming, vitamins supplementation, vaccination, de-
horning, etc. are done.
Renovation of Old Age Homes
Established by the Red Cross Society and the social welfare
department, the “Old Age Home” at Raigarh is home to 38
senior citizens. Because of the resource crunch, some of the
facilities could not be maintained or developed properly.
JSPL took upon the responsibility of maintaining this “Old Age Home” by establishing
medical examination facilities, hospital and isolation ward and first aid center, developing
land for a nursery and kitchen and installing hand pumps.
JSPL's CSR strategy includes:

Offering proper access to medical and other essential facilities is yet another aspect of
JSPL’s social initiatives.

eye surgeon from Trivandrum conducts eye camps.
Surgery is carried out by the PHACO method in which no
suturing is required. The surgery costing Rs.10,000 is done
free of cost in the camp.
Cataract operations are conducted for patients annually,
free of cost. Spectacles & fruits are distributed to all patients after the operation.

Pulse polio vaccination and HIV/AIDS detection camps

Pulse polio vaccination and HIV/AIDS detection camps are organized from time to time
in Raigarh, Patratu and Angul. Blood samples of all workmen are examined. Suspected
