Matrilineal - also called matriliny, group adhering to a kinship system in which ancestral descent is

traced through maternal instead of paternal lines (the latter being termed patrilineage or patriliny). Every
society incorporates some basic components in its system of reckoning kinship: family, marriage,
postmarital residence, rules that prohibit sexual relations (and therefore marriage) between certain
categories of kin, descent, and the terms used to label kin. A lineage is a group of individuals who trace
descent from a common ancestor; thus, in a matrilineage, individuals are related as kin through the female
line of descent.Matrilineage is sometimes associated with group marriage or polyandry (marriage of one
woman to two or more men at the same time). Anthropologists have provided different perspectives and
interpretations about kinship and its role in society. With a perspective based in Charles Darwin’s theory
of evolution, some 19th-century scholars, such as Johann Jakob Bachofen and Lewis Henry Morgan,
believed that matrilineal societies predated patrilineal ones and represented an earlier evolutionary stage.
Accordingly, patrilineal systems were also considered more “civilized” and advanced than matrilineal
systems. Writing within the framework of the evolutionary thinking developing at the time, Morgan also
argued that matrilineal systems would progressively evolve into patrilineal systems. Over time, that view
gained popularity far beyond anthropological and ethnological circles.

Partrilineal - A genetic condition that spreads in a patrilineal way might be passed from your
grandfather, through your dad, and finally to you. And through history, some monarchies have been
patrilineal, meaning that when a king dies, only his son can succeed him (and not his
daughter). Patrilineal adds the Latin prefix patri-, or "father," to lineal, from the Late Latin linealis,
"relating to a line."

Bilineal - descent is system of family descent where blood links and rights of inheritance through both
male and female ancestors are of equal importance. Bilineal descent is system is tracing kinship
structure through both parents. The most common form is bilateral descent. A system of tracing descent
through both the mother’s and father’s sides of the family.
Monoganous - Someone who is monogamous or who has a monogamous relationship has
a sexual relationship with only one partner.

Polygamous In a polygamous society, people can be legally married to more than one person at the
same time. A polygamous person, especially a man, is married to more than one person.

Polygyny- the practice of having more than one wife or permanent female
sexual partner at the same time.

Polyandry - the state or practice of having more than one husband or male mate at
one time.
Bourgeoise - belonging to or typical of the middle class (= the social group between
the rich and the poor), esp. in supporting established customs and values or in having
a strong interest in money and possessions:
