Chapter-4 (Sure Shot Questions)

Time Allowed: 1 hour and 30 minutes Maximum Marks: 37

Section A
1. A galvanometer coil has a resistance of 15Ω and the metre shows full scale deflection for a [1]
current of 4 mA. How will you convert the metre into an ammeter of range 0 to 6 A?
2. Draw the magnetic field lines due to a current carrying loop. [1]
3. Write the SI unit of (i) magnetic pole strength (ii) magnetic dipole moment of a bar magnet. [1]
4. An electron moving through a magnetic field does not experience any force. Under what [1]
condition is this possible?
5. A beam of α-particles projected along +X-axis experiences a force due to a magnetic field [1]
along the + Y-axis. What is the direction of the magnetic field?
[2]
6.
What is cyclotron? Discuss the principle, construction, theory and working of a cyclotron.
7. Distinguish between a diamagnetic substance and a paramagnetic substance. [2]
8. (a) Derive expression for force acting per unit length between to parallel current carrying [2]
wire.
 (b) A wire AB is carrying a current of 12 A and is lying on the table. Another wire CD, carrying
current 5 A is arranged just above AB at a height of 1 mm. What should be the weight per unit
length of the wire so that CD remains suspended at its position? Indicate the directions of
current in CD and the nature of force between two wires.

9. State Ampere circuital law? Using Ampere's circuital law calculate the magnetic field inside [2]
the toroid.
10. Two identical circular loops P and Q, each of radius r and carrying equal currents are kept in [2]
the parallel planes having a common axis passing through O. The direction of current in P is
clockwise and in Q is anti-clockwise as seen from O which is equidistant from the loops P and
Q. Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at O.

11. Define current sensitivity and voltage sensitivity of a galvanometer. Increasing the current [3]

sensitivity may not necessarily increase the voltage sensitivity of galvanometer. Justify.
12. Find the expression for magnetic dipole moment of a revolving electron. What is Bohr [3]
magneton?
13. i. Write the expression for the magnetic force acting on a charged particle moving with [3]
velocity v in the presence of magnetic field B.
ii. A neutron, an electron and an alpha particle moving with equal velocities, enter a uniform
magnetic field going into the plane of the paper as shown in the figure. Trace their paths in
the field and justify your answer.

14. State the principle of working of a galvanometer. A galvanometer of resistance G is converted [3]
into a voltmeter to measure upto V volts by connecting a resistance R1 in series with the coil. If
V
a resistance R2 is connected in series with it, then it can measure upto 2
volts. Find the

resistance, in terms of R1 and R2, required to be connected to convert it into a voltmeter that
can read upto 2V. Also, find the resistance G of the galvanometer in terms of R1 and R2.

15. a. Using Biot-Savart's law, derive an expression for the magnetic field at the centre of a [5]
circular coil of radius R, number of turns N, carrying current i.
b. Two small identical circular coils marked 1, 2 carry equal currents and are placed with
their geometric axes perpendicular to each other as shown in the figure. Derive an
expression for the resultant magnetic field at O.

16. Use Biot-Savart's law to derive the expression for the magnetic field on the axis of a current [5]
carrying circular loop of radius R. Draw the magnetic field lines due to a circular wire
carrying current (I).
