Big Ideas:
1. Societies and states experience conflict internally for political, social, and economic reasons. Conflict between societies
and states is caused by shifts of power, acquisition of natural resources, and defense.
2. Resolutions are formed by governments to meet the needs of their people and state.
3. WWI began due to ethnic conflicts between European nations which led to the rise of nationalism, alliance systems, and
the desire for self- governance.
4. Other causes of WWI included ideological and political conflicts such as imperialism, militarism, the decline of the
Ottoman Empire, and the Balkan Crisis.
5. Revolution in Russia began in 1905 due to poor leadership and economic difficulty and continued intermittently until
after the 1917 Russian Civil War.
WWI increased economic struggles leading to social uprising and the emergence of socialist worker parties in Russia.
6. Ideologies such as capitalism, communism, and socialism spread throughout Euro- Asia in the early 20th century. Russian
communist leaders emerged victorious at the conclusion of the Russian Civil War, establishing a the first communist
