Saints owner denies team had role in clergy sex abuse list

Orleans Saints said Mon-
day that the NFL team
played no role in determin-
ing which priests would be
named in the list of “cred-
ibly accused” clergy pub-
lished by the area’s Roman
Catholic Church.
Gayle Benson, a devout
Catholic who has donat-
ed millions of dollars to
church causes, also said in
a lengthy statement that
she has never “contrib-
uted nor will ever make
payments” to pay for legal
settlements to the victims
of clergy abuse.
“To suggest that I
would offer money to the
Catholic Church to pay
for anything related to the
clergy-molestation issue
sickens me,” she added.
It was not clear who had
made that suggestion.
The statement marked
Benson’s first remarks
since The Associated
Press reported last month
about hundreds of confi-
dential Saints emails that
allegedly show team ex-
ecutives did behind-the-
scenes public relations
damage control amid
the archdiocese’s clergy
abuse crisis — commu-

gone to court to keep from

Benson’s statement

Bensel, the Saints’ se-

communications, helped
the Archdiocese of New

November 2018 release of
a list that named dozens
of clergy members whom
the church deemed “cred-
ibly accused” of sexually
abusing children.
Benson, who inherited
the Saints and New Orle-
ans Pelicans following her
husband’s 2018 death, said
Bensel urged the church
to be “honest, complete
and transparent.”
“We are proud of the
role we played and yes, in
hindsight, we would help
again to assist the Archdi-
ocese in its ability to pub-
lish the list with the hope
of taking this step to heal
the community,” Benson
said.
Attorneys for about
two dozen men suing the
church have painted a dif-
ferent picture of the team’s
role, alleging in court fil-
ings that the confidential
emails show executives
joined in the church’s “pat-
tern and practice of con-
cealing its crimes.”

“(The PSC) asked for
2021, and our board said,
‘You can have 2020,’” she
said. “They said, ‘No, no,
we don’t want them this
year, we want them next
year, the home tours.’”
But the PSC wanted
the home tours to not just
be a part but the essence
of the Pilgrimage.
“We became aware
many of you don’t have
a clear understanding
(of) what Pilgrimage is,”
the organization stated
in an October letter ad-
dressed to the CVB and
the CCHF. “Pilgrimage
consists of home tours
and the events that sup-
port it.”
The funding for the
2021 Pilgrimage also re-
mained a sticking point.
The CVB, which is pri-
marily funded through
the state’s recently re-
stored 2-percent restau-
rant sales tax, provides
funding for CCHF on an
annual basis for the var-
ious events the nonprofit
holds, including the Pil-
grimage.
In its September let-
ter, the PSC requested
$117,000 from the CVB
in funding for the 2021
Pilgrimage along with
control of the event. The
$117,000, Novotny said,
was a calculation based
on the CCHF’s 2016 tax
returns, which showed
$89,432 in expense, in
addition to the amount of
salaries paid to run the
festival.
“The Preservation So-
ciety is requesting sim-
ple business transaction
— the transfer of dedi-
cated monies from one
nonprofit organization
to another,” the organi-
zation stated in a Novem-
ber letter.

Frustration grows
In its October letter,
PSC board members
expressed frustrations
toward the agencies,
citing poor communica-
tions and financial deficit
under the CCHF’s man-
agement, among other
things.
“Homeowners have
received contracts mere
days before Pilgrimage
began, and, frequently,
printed materials were
produced at the last min-
ute,” the letter stated.
“Potential tourists did
not have proper time to
plan their trips.”
Sometimes, Novot-
ny added, homeowners
wouldn’t receive their
contracts until weeks be-
fore the Pilgrimage.
Carpenter said there

Pilgrimage funding dispute needs good faith effort from both sides
W
hen a group of owners of
historic Columbus homes
formed a nonprofit to take
over operations of the Columbus
Spring Pilgrimage almost six months
ago, we hoped for an amicable parting
and a quick resolution to any disputes
over funding that might come as a
result of the change.
While the Columbus Cultural
Heritage Foundation ultimately agreed
to the request by the new group – The
Preservation Society of Columbus – to
conduct the event most associated
with Pilgrimage (the Home and Gar-
den Tours), the dispute over funding
continues. At issue seems to be sep-
arating the funding of the tours from
the other Pilgrimage events, including
the kickoff party, half marathon, Cat-
fish in the Alley.
Currently, most of the PSC home-
owners have declined to participate
in this year’s home tour, the last to
be operated by the CCHF, leaving a
scaled-down version of the 80-year-old
event.
That’s a troubling sign that the split
between the PSC and the CCHF, is
nowhere close to being resolved.
The PSC wants to reinvent the
Pilgrimage, adding its own programs
which won’t necessarily include some
of the other non-home tour events. The
PSC wants the full amount of funding
that has been previously provided for
the Pilgrimage, which would allow the
group to keep or replace some of the
events to focus the Pilgrimage more
on a history of the city beyond a hand-
ful of homes. They say that includes
the black community, which has been
as much a part of the story of the city’s
history as any group.
To understand the dispute, it’s
important to note that for all intents
and purposes, the CCHF is essential-
ly a wing of the Columbus-Lowndes
Convention & Visitors Bureau. The
two groups share the same board of
directors and the CVB has historically
given large amounts of money to the
CCHF.
The CVB provides the vast major-
ity of the funds for Pilgrimage events
through the revenue it receives from
the county’s 2-percent restaurant tax.
Through its incestuous relationship
with the CCHF, the CVB doesn’t just
provide funding for the Pilgrimage, it
operates the Pilgrimage.
Now, it appears the CVB/CCHF is
trying to retain some portion of the
funding to operate and/or market
those Pilgrimage programs it has not
handed over to the PSC. Some of these
events are of value and should be re-
tained. From the CCHF’s perspective,
that means retaining control of them.
The other sticking point is adver-
tising. The CVB notes that much of its
advertising budget is spent to promote
all tourist-related events, so it’s diffi-
cult to calculate exactly how much of
that advertising pie should be turned
over to the PSC.
Clearly, there’s much negotiating
left to be done. Our concern is that the
relationship between the PSC and the
CCHF/CVB is too toxic to be produc-
tive.
What should be obvious is that hav-
ing two entities working independent-
ly to operate Pilgrimage events is a
recipe for waste and inconsistency.
Neither side can claim the high
road until each has agreed to sit down
and resolve these issues in good faith.
Without it, the Pilgrimage’s future
is in doubt.
To paraphrase Lincoln, a Pilgrim-
age divided against itself cannot stand.

Reeves sounds
ready to spend
Newly elected Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves
made his first inaugural address last week
promising to focus on deregulation and free
markets to spur growth. He acknowledged the
state’s responsibility to take care of its foster
children and ensure state prisoners are protect-
ed from harm. He touted the state’s progress in
fourth grade test scores and promised to raise
teachers’ salaries.
Reeves promised to represent all Missis-
sippians and praised our state for its diversity,
determination, hard work, spirit, beauty and
religious faith. It was a good, uplifting speech,
touching on all the right themes.
Reeves said, “We worked hard over the last
decade to recover from a brutal recession, and
do the hard, necessary work of rebuilding. We
have been forced to make many hard choices
in the budget and prioritized the fiscal stability
of the state. It’s a position that so many families
and businesses know all too well. We often
looked at our budgets and longed to do more.
Today, we finally can.
“Thanks to cost-saving measures and tax
cuts that have spurred our economy, we have
more money coming in than ever before. We
must never forget that our focus on protecting
the taxpayers is what got us to this financial po-
sition. As we begin to allocate this new revenue,
I can think of no one more deserving, and no
task more essential, than increasing the pay of
our teachers.”
Reading the full text of Reeves’ speech, and
reading between the lines, it looks as if Reeves
may be ready to end the non-stop budget cut-
ting and spend some money. That’s probably a
good thing. Our schools, parks, prisons, roads,
bridges, child care services and mental health
system all need a lot of work.
Reeves started his political career just as the
Democratic state leadership was losing power.
At that time, our state budget had escalated
rapidly. From 2000 to 2010, Mississippi’s gross
domestic product, according to the federal Bu-
reau of Economic Analysis website, increased
45 percent while total state spending, fueled
by federal dollars, increased a whopping 99
percent. So total state spending increased twice
as much as state GDP.
Since the Republicans took power in Missis-
sippi, the exact opposite has happened. From
2010 to 2020, Mississippi GDP has increased 22
percent while total state spending increased 7
percent. So total state spending increased one-
third as much as state GDP.
Ideally, total state spending should more or
less track state GDP growth. What we’re seeing
is that under Democratic Party rule, the state
spent too much. And now under Republican
rule, the state is spending too little. It is inter-
esting to note that state GDP growth was dou-
ble when the Democrats ruled. No doubt there
are many complex factors involved, not the
least of which was the huge influx of federal tax
dollars from 2000 to 2010. That being said, the
facts show the Mississippi economy grew twice
as fast when the Democrats were in power.
We endorse the Republican Party’s vision of
free markets and reduced red tape as the key to
long-range growth for Mississippi. But we cau-
tion state leaders not to overshoot their mark
and ignore fundamental infrastructure that —
while costing tax dollars — is also important to
growth. We need good schools, well-maintained
roads and a criminal justice system, especially
prisons, free from gangs and corruption. For
our spiritual well-being, Mississippians need
to be part of a state that takes care of widows
and orphans both through our churches and
nonprofits and properly run state programs.
And if being part of the richest nation in the
world has the advantage of a poor state being
the recipient of federal dollars, we don’t need to
be looking any gift horses in the mouth.

State laws discourage women from running
Speaker Gunn and the legislature are wagering
some bets against the women of Mississippi and the
current and future retirees of the state of Missis-
sippi. They are betting that they can continue to
keep women out of the Capitol, knowing that women
make up the majority of state educators who must
give up their pension to serve in the legislature.
They are betting that you don’t know or care that
Mississippi ranks last in the United States in women
represented in the state houses at just 13 percent.
They are betting they can keep the over 100,000
state retirees from serving. A group that includes
qualified engineers, law enforcement personnel,
professors, coaches, teachers, accountants and the
many other personnel who have spent their careers
working for the state of Mississippi.
They are betting on keeping current state
employees from serving once they retire. They
are betting they can keep women and state retir-
ees from serving by claiming that the law doesn’t
allow for it because you would be “double dipping”
the system. They are betting you won’t care that
they themselves “double dip” with two retirement
systems. You probably know that Mississippi’s
legislators are members of PERS. But did you know
that they also are provided an additional retirement
plan known as the Supplemental Legislative Retire-
ment Plan (SLRP) giving them a retirement that
is 1.5 times higher than the retirement of a state
employee? SLRP was established in 1989 to provide
supplemental benefits, in addition to PERS benefits,
to all members of the Mississippi Legislature and
the Lieutenant Governor. They are betting you will
overlook the fact that the Attorney General has
given an opinion that allows retirees to serve and
collect their pension. They are betting you don’t
know or care that there were two bills, HB 601 and
HB 604 that were killed, that would have fixed this
situation and allowed more women and retirees to
serve. They are betting they will continue to rule by
exclusion and not by ideas.
The biggest bet they are wagering however
is that you won’t do anything about it. They are
betting that you will make a little fuss now but will
forget about it soon enough.
Let’s put an end to the madness in the Capitol.
There is no reasonable excuse why an educator
and state retiree, who is allowed by law to work at
any other state agency part-time for part-pay, should
not be allowed to serve in the Mississippi legislature
and collect their hard-earned retirement income.
If we stick together and become proactive we can

Response to accusations of bias
Earlier this month, Paul Mack accused me of
not being objective in my comments concerning
the State of the Union. He made reference to the
refusal of the President, who was ready to face the
world and make the most important and greatest
speech of his life, to shake Nancy Pelosi’s hand. I
saw several camera angles of that on Fox News and
it was obvious the President didn’t refuse to shake
anybody’s hand. Mr. Mack probably doesn’t watch
much of Fox News, and I’m pretty sure he didn’t see
it on his main news sources. Nor did he see the poll
where over half the country felt it was not a refusal
by our President. Now common sense would dictate
the opposite. I’m thinking Nancy Pelosi didn’t want
to shake hands with President Trump and never will
— seeing how she has been trying to destroy him
and his family for many moons which has been ob-
vious to the whole universe. To be fair and objective
about this, if the President had shook the hand of VP
Pence, which he didn’t do, and then not shaken Pelo-
si’s hand — I would have questioned that for sure.
Another point to counter: He claimed that I am
more biased than he is. And that I’m not capable of
seeing inside me. Well that’s a pretty far out opinion
of me, and he has a right to his own opinion, but I
disagree completely. I haven’t bad mouthed any on
his list of Democrats running for President, and
I have to confess sins more often than even Mitt
Romney.
Mr. Mack made a point that we are similar. Not
so. He likes to read my letters for some reason,
which is good; I don’t read his letters though be-
cause of the undeserved put-downs about President
Trump. He brags about being a Democrat; I say
I’m a Conservative Independent who votes for the
person, not a party.

members diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries
has shot up to more than 100, the Pentagon said
Monday, as more troops suffer the aftereffects
of the Iranian ballistic missile attack early last
month in Iraq.
The department said the latest total is 109 mil-
itary members who have been treated for mild

The number of injuries has been steadily in-
creasing since the Pentagon began releasing data
on the injuries about a week after the Jan. 8 at-
tack at al-Asad Air Base in Iraq. Pentagon officials

bers have returned to duty, while 26 are in Germa-
ny or the United States for treatment, and another
seven are on their way from Iraq to Germany for

All-SEC first team, while
the other four were hon-
ored as second teamers
last week.
“Obviously we have
the best middle infield
in the country, I think,
in Jordan Westburg and
Justin Foscue,” Lemonis
said. “And not just offen-
sively — people look at
their offensive numbers
— they’re really good de-
fenders and really know
how to play the game.”
Lemonis also ex-
pressed that the pitching
staff will be anchored by
reigning National Fresh-
man of the Year J.T. Ginn,
sophomore Eric Ceran-
tola and freshman Chris-
tian MacLeod.
Pitching behind Small

commodities. Cerantola
spent much of 2019 as
a mid-week starter and

high as 98 miles per hour
this fall and is expected
to take a step forward as
a starter.
MacLeod is even more
of a mystery after a lin-
gering illness forced him
to redshirt last season. A
6-foot-4 lefthander, Ma-
cLeod will be the lone
southpaw in MSU’s start-
ing rotation to begin the
season.
“We’re really going to
be challenged,” Lemo-
nis said of his squad that
welcomes 26 newcomers
to the roster. “Hopefully
with this group we’re a
lot better team at the end
of the year than we are at
the beginning.”

STARKVILLE — It’s
incredibly likely that
Tuesday’s men’s basket-
ball matchup between
Mississippi State and
Ole Miss won’t be the
chaos-inducing, dra-
ma-filled spectacle its
Egg Bowl counterpart
was in November.
Nevertheless, the
Bulldogs (15-8, 6 -4 SEC)
are feeling the pressure
that comes with the ri-
valry as they prepare for
the first of two matchups
with the Rebels (12-11,
3-7) this season, starting
at 6 p.m. at the Pavilion
in Oxford.
“I think you feel it
more in basketball,”
MSU coach Ben How-
land said Monday. “It’s
just more enclosed and
there’s way more inten-
sity in a closed building
when everyone’s right
on top of you. I think it’s
great in football, no ques-
tion, but in terms of the
intimacy of basketball,
there’s nothing like it.
That’s why it’s the fast-
est growing sport in the
world. There’s no ques-
tion in whatever we play
them in, in any sport,
there’s competition to
be the best. So there’s
no question we feel (the
pressure) very strongly.”
Playing its in-state ri-
val aside, MSU needs a
victory against Ole Miss
from a logistics stand-
point to bolster its NCA A
tournament resume.
As of Monday, the Bull-
dogs sat at No. 41 in the
NCA A’s NET rankings,
while the Rebels came
in at No. 93. In his latest
update, ESPN college
basketball expert Joe Lu-
nardi had MSU among
the first four out of the
NCA A tournament pic-
ture, so every win mat-
ters down the stretch.

mer after his freshman

pitcher for any school and
that the Patriots are lucky
to be able to rotate all four.

players who are “staples”
at their positions, Flake
said there’s still a lot up for
grabs as the start of the
season nears.
“There’s playing time
available for guys who
want to step up and get it,”
Flake said.
With only two starters
having departed — JR
Lott and Parker Ray —
Smith said he’s confident
that the Patriots’ familiar-
ity will play to their advan-
tage.
“We’re pretty experi-
enced on the field, and the
more we play on the field,
the more we play together,
the more we jell together,”
Smith said.
But no matter how
much experience the Pa-
triots have, it’s a new sea-
son with the same expec-
tation: not merely backing
up their title but in active
pursuit of a repeat.
“It’s not like we’re
‘defending,’” Flake said.
“We’re going in to try to
get another one.”

the Owls have the fit
down, they’re still waiting
on the funding.
The athletic director
said last March in an arti-
cle from the MUW Spec-
tator that he expected to
begin progress on phase
one of the three-phase
project 10 to 12 months
later. Monday, though,
Trufant admitted that the
school is an estimated 18
to 24 months away from
completing phase one,
the largest of the three,
which will comprise the
field, bullpens, dugouts
and lights.
Phase two (covered
seating, the press box,
brick pillars and a brick
entranceway) will follow,
with phase three (park-
ing, a main course, bath-
rooms and concession
stands) to finish up the
project.
But neither of those
can begin until phase one
is done, Trufant stressed.
MUW is determined
to tackle the project in
chunks rather than see it
become “piecemeal,” he
said.
“We are not trying to
do this on a small level,”
Trufant said. “We want to
do it right.”
Fundraising remains
ongoing for the project,
with the school accepting
donations on its website
— and seeking even larg-
er game.
“For a facility of this
magnitude, it’s not really
about the small fundrais-
ers,” Trufant said.
Trufant’s timeline for
the completion of phase
one is subject to change
dependent on the pace of
fundraising, and he could
not speculate on how long
it would be until the proj-
ect was fully completed.
But when it is, Trufant
knows the impact it could
have on the school and
the community beyond.
“This city and this area
does not have a facility of
the type that we want to
build,” Trufant said. “Our
baseball program would
benefit significantly, but
our campus would also
benefit significantly with
the ability to host numer-
ous outdoor events and
recreational activities as
well.”
The MUW baseball
team currently plays its
home games at Colum-
bus High School’s home
field, and an upgrade in
facilities would “change
the game” for the Owls’
recruiting efforts.
But the implications of
a new stadium would go
beyond just the team.
“It’s not just specif-
ic for the baseball pro-
gram,” Trufant said. “It’s
gonna help every outdoor
program we have along
with every recreation
program we have.”
Plans for the park in-
clude LED lights, an ar-
tificial playing surface
and a brick façade “will
harken back to the gold-
en age of baseball and
historic stadiums of yes-
teryear,” according to the
school’s website.
Trufant said it was in-
spired by the Owls’ trip
to the USCA A Small
College World Series in
DuBois, Pennsylvania,
where he got to see the
allures of host side Show-
ers Field.
He met with architect
Michael Taylor of Pryor-
Morrow’s Columbus of-
fice, and the two got to
work in laying out Tru-
fant’s vision.
“I let him know what I
was thinking, and he put
his artistic mind to use,
and that’s what we came
up with,” Trufant said.
“We were just trying to
have something that was
not only unique for the
campus but unique for
the area.”
Trufant is confident
MUW has planned ex-
actly that, but he knows
the project still requires
a lot of work before it can
come to fruition.
He’s holding one-on-
one meetings with poten-
tial donors and sponsors
to make sure he and the
Owls’ program are equal-
ly visible to the larger
community.
“The more conversa-
tions we have about it,
the faster the product
will come, so I encourage
people to ask questions
and be part of something
that’s really, really, real-
ly gonna be good for the
campus,” Trufant said.
And no matter how
long it takes, Trufant
wants to make sure his
school finds the right fit.
“We owe this to our
campus to do this right,
and my commitment is
to do it right,” he said.
“However long it takes
to do it right is what we’ll
do, and obviously we
would prefer the sooner
the better, but we have
full support of this cam-
pus and full support of
this community, so I have
no reason why we won’t
have a nice product in the
future.”
