STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I must describe as undetermined the moment from which my compassion began to aim predominantly
towards the natural environment and all the elements that compose it. With the passing of the years since my
existence here on Earth, I have been able to witness behind the transparent glass of “development”, how our
relationship with nature is becoming more noxious; on having assumed us with the right to take a big part of
our Earth as if it was completely within our jurisdiction. By being in this tiny piece of our universe, this small
lively area; I already feel fortunate enough. I, Jasver Kaur, resident of Mansa, Punjab, India is fortunate to write
this statement of purpose to put forward my intent to study Advanced Water Systems Operations and
Management at Fleming College for January 2019 intake. I am an optimistic person who tries to view the world
from positive perspective and I always carry an honest and caring attitude towards the society. I am a very
realistic and practical person, having the adaptability and litheness, which makes me feel comfortable in any
situation. I come from a nuclear family, wherein, I live with my parents and younger brother who is a student.
My father is an agriculturist and my mother is a home maker. My interest to pursue this course has come from
my father who has been taking care of his agriculture lands. With him, I understood the importance of natural
resources and how their influence our life’s daily. My parents always taught me the benefits of quality
education and its importance in changing the society. I wish to pursue my graduate certificate diploma in
ADVANCED WATER SYSTEMS OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT at FLEMING COLLEGE Ontario, Canada wherein
I will get the global exposure with the different environment as well the international education which will
help me to gain the best of the knowledge for my future.

EDUCATION BACKGROUND:
I have completed my senior secondary education in non-medical stream in 2014. After that I got admission in
Bachelor of Science – Biotechnology at Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala affiliated to Punjabi University
Patiala in May 2017. Thereafter, I started deciding on available career options for myself in India , but soon
realised that companies prefer either experienced employees or employees having international education
background, which unfortunately I lacked , so I decided to study abroad and choose to study in Canada as I
believe that Canada has abundance of natural resources and I will be able to learn the maximum there and in
May 2018 , I started to prepare for IELTS and after appearing for IELTS exam held on 21 July 2018 , I scored
overall 6.5 band scores (Listening: 7.5Bands,Reading: 6 Bands, Writing :6 Bands &Speaking: 6 Bands)

The major reason for choosing the Canadian college for study is due to its high-quality education which is
valued through-out the world. Moreover, Canada boasts a wide range of quality educationally institutions for
both degree and diploma, which maintains high standards of academic excellence and is consistently

Education will provide me those standards to get the exposure that I have not been getting throughout my
education here in India. Moreover, Canadian culture is diverse, vibrant and safe. Being a mélange of different
cultures from all over the world, different perspectives are respected and learning together is encouraged in
Canada. Moreover, the living expenses and tuition cost of Canada is considerably lower than that of United
States of America and United Kingdom. I believe studding in Canada will give me an opportunity to do
something on my own and prove my abilities and as I have already mentioned, Canada is the largest reserve
for earth’s natural resources, I will be able to experience the impact of my chosen field in a better manner.

of the students. The programs offered by the college are industry oriented and designed as per the industry
demands and generally have work placements, projects, internships, in lab trainings and Co-op Employments
as a mandatory part of the curriculum.

WHY WATER SYSTEMS OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT:

As I done my graduation in science stream specially in biotechnology field, during my study I did a lot of
practical and lab work which encouraged me to choose a course which will give me the opportunity to show
my practical, lab skills. Moreover in countries in like India where wastewater as well as water pollution is
major reason in the water reduction that’s why I think this program will give me the great opportunity from
treating of waste water to safeguard against water-borne diseases and to ensure a healthy environment in a
good manner and I will be able to utilize these learned skills in India , where this water problem is very common
in some remote areas. Apart from this I would be a big chance to learn about water systems operation and
understand government regulations on the treatment of wastewater.
The basic Ideology of this course is enabling people to work towards safeguarding against water-borne
diseases and ensure a healthy environment in an efficient and sustainable manner as this is paramount in both
public and private sector industries. The provision of potable water and the effective treatment of the
municipal and industrial wastewater streams are growing fields in the environmental sector. The Ontario
government has passed into law rigorous training requirements for water and wastewater treatment
operators, in response to recommendations made in the Walkerton Commission of Inquiry reports. Under the
Safe Water Drinking Act, operators require training and certification to run these systems safely. This one-year
Graduate Certificate program in Advanced Water Systems Operations and Management will provide me with:

 The opportunity to do real, hands-on manipulation of equipment and data collection, learning about
water systems operation in our labs and wet-work facilities.
 Faculty expertise to guide me in understanding government regulations on the treatment of water and
wastewater in this highly regulated and changing industry.
 The knowledge needed to pass the Ministry of Environment Licensing and Certification exams for
Water and Wastewater Operators.
 Project management skills, essential to your success in this field.
 Critical thinking and troubleshooting skills required to respond to emergency or non-routine situations
as an operator or supervisor in this challenging field.

Course Learning Outcome

Post completion of my course, I will be able to

 Utilize a wide variety of instrumentation and standardized protocols for the collection and analysis of
samples and data required in the operation of water and wastewater facilities;
 Collaborate with individuals and groups in testing and troubleshooting equipment at various water
treatment and distribution facilities and at wastewater collection and treatment facilities;
 Evaluate system design and operations based on current legislation, regulations and standards
affecting water and wastewater treatment plants, scope and authority of facility permits and
owner/operator responsibilities;
 Develop risk management strategies including emergency response and disaster preparedness for
water and wastewater systems;
 Test and monitor microbiological parameters in water and wastewater applications and propose
remediation strategies to reduce/ eliminate contaminants;
 Assess current, innovative and emerging technologies in such areas as water conservation, alternative
supply (e.g. rainwater) and zero-discharge for the provision of potable water and wastewater
treatment and their possible applications within the industry;
 Assess the sustainability of current infrastructure in water operations, considering maintenance plans,
addressing future needs, energy utilization improvements, population growth and financing of water
services.
 Manage projects in the maintenance, renewal, and replacement of utility infrastructure using project
planning and project management tools.

FUTURE PLANS:

My parents have always told me from my childhood, if I learn and gain right education, I will achieve all my
desires in my life I have seen that over the years, and in this era of concrete completion, I need to gain edge
over others. By doing my masters in India, I cannot do so. So, to stand out of the crowd I have decided to do
my post graduate from Fleming and this would help me to bring back my learned skills to India and
Furthermore it also help me to use the skills and techniques to treat the wastewater and make the
environment healthy. I will seek employment in public and private sectors like work in municipalities with
water and wastewater treatment systems, in water-use industries, in inspection or environmental monitoring
agencies like Thermax. D Ltd., Vat Technical Wabag GmbH, GE Water, Siemens, Hindustan Dorr-Oliver Ltd.
WOG Technologies, UEM India Pvt. Ltd., SFC Environmental Technologies PVT LTD., VA Tech GMBH etc where
in I can work as Examiner Water Treatment, Lab Executive, District Project Manager (DPM), Water Treatment
Technician, Water Treatment Engineer, Operator , Waste Water Treatment etc. My annual salary may range
around 8-10 lacs per annum.
I firmly believe that I will be able to achieve great heights and run into some great research options after
successful completion of ADVANCED WATER SYSTEMS OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT from Fleming. My
priority in life is to gain good knowledge, and then I can bring this to a practical situation by applying it in my
professional and personal life.
