CASE ANALYSIS
SSM 103 – GEOGHRAPHY 3: URBAN GEOGRAPHY

General Instruction:
1. Answer the question as comprehensive as you can. Use illustrations e.g. paradigms,
matrices, charts or tables to provide direction and facilitate your presentations and
discussions.
2. Ten (10) points each. The criteria for grading are as follows: Content – 5; Supporting
Arguments – 3 and the Writing Mechanics – 2.

CASE 1. Urban Geography

1. Using a graphical organizer, define and explain urban geography from varying standpoints
and perspectives.

SSM 103 – GEOGHRAPHY 3: URBAN GEOGRAPHY.

1ST SEMESTER.
According to Castree, N., Kitchin, R., & Rogers, A.(2013). "Urban geography."
This geographical organizer shows the definition of urban geography and its function to
the society. In addition, this also shows how progressive an urbanization can be in the
future.

CASE 2. Sustainable Development

2. Should the principle of sustainable development be taken into consideration in expanding

and renovating urban areas? Support your answer.

According to Mcgranahan and Satterthwaite 2013 the concept of sustainability is

about reconciling “development” and “environment”. Meeting the people needs and wants
requires a lot of resources which may use the limits and capacity of natural resources,
considering the sustainable development through improving rural areas into urban will
make development and environment balance in the world. However, if people will not
consider sustainable development as one of the factors that will balance development and
environment, we might experience environmental breakdown whish resulting the scarcity
of resources as the population grows the needs of the people is also increases. Therefore,
urban planners will consider sustainable development so that the balance between
environment and development will maintain and scarcity will not foster, Furthermore,
nowadays urban planners is considering the essence of sustainable development, just like
what they did in the “New Globl Clark City” which they provide space for planting trees
and garden which they call “innovation and environmental friendly”. If urban planners
continue to do this, we will continuously improve and sustain the needs and wants of the
people and the environment. Nonetheless, a city or region cannot be sustainable if its
principles and actions toward its own natural resources is not that good considering the
needs and wants of the people living on the community consumes a higher volume of
resources. This will result a scarcity of a resources within a society, so building an
infrastructure urban planner should consider sustainable development.

CASE 3. Relationship of Urban Geography

3. Critically analyze and present the relationship of urban geography to the other subsets of
geography.

Geography is all around us, and we are now living through a dramatic world that
attitudes is drastically changes. According to Ron J. Johnston (2000). "Urban." The
relationship of urban geography to the other subsets of geography to be specific in relation
to Physical Geography and Human Geography, urban geography unambiguously
concerned with the ways in which cities and towns are constructed, governed and
experienced on the other hand it is also concerned with the needs of the human so that
human geography relates with urban geography also humans interacts with the
environment and build an artificial sceneries and critically assess the relationships among
the place. Therefore, human geography basically relate to urban geography because of
human interacts with the environment and human creates a place where they can live and
satisfies their needs also urban geography is one of the branches of Human Geography.

1ST SEMESTER.
In addition, the even development also depends how human portray the specific place
where they will convert rural areas into urban region.
While in Physical Geography is important in understanding why a city is in a
specific area as site and environmental conditions play a large role and because of urban
geography the climate is changing because many people turn the agricultural into a rural
area also urbanization also takes place into the land where the natural resources of the
human takes place relating with urban geography, it destroys trees and creating a big
impact to the environment. Therefore, urban geography affects physical geography
through innovations and modernization. Nonetheless, physical geography reacts on what
urban geography do to the land and places, change the climate, environment and creates
natural disaster that may occur. Physical geography it’s a little of everything where urban
geography relies and grow.
