Agung Mosque of Central Java

Masjid Agung is the bigest mosque in Central Java, Indonesia. Masjid Agung located in
Gajah Raya street, Gayamsari district, Central Java province, Indonesia. This mosque was built in
2001 through 2006. The mosque stands on 10 acres of land. Mosque complex consists of the main
building area of 7669 m2 and 7500 m2 area of the page. The Great Mosque was inaugurated by
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on November 14, 2006. Inauguration ceremony
was marked by the signing of the stone inscriptions as high as 3.2 m and weighing 7.8 tons, located in
front of the mosque. The inscription is made of natural stones from the slopes of Mount Merapi.

The Great Mosque of Central Java was designed in a architectural style of Javanese, Islamic
and Roman mixture. Designed by Ir. H. Ahmad Fanani from PT. Atelier Enam Jakarta who won the
MAJT design competition in 2001. The main building is a pyramid-roofed mosque typical of Javanese
buildings but at the end it is equipped with a large dome with a diameter of 20 meters plus 4 towers
each 62 meters high in each corner of the roof as a form of building a universal Islamic mosque
complete with one tower apart from the 99 meter high mosque building. Roman style can be seen
from the 25 pillars of the mosque. The pillars in Roman style of the Roman Colosseum are decorated
with beautiful calligraphy, symbolizing 25 Prophets and Apostles, at the gates written two shahada
sentences, on a flat plane written Arabic Malay letters "Sucining Guno Gapuraning Gusti".

The Great Mosque of Central Java, besides being prepared as a place of worship, is also
prepared as a religious tourist attraction. To support this goal, the Great Mosque is equipped with a
guest house with a capacity of 23 rooms of various classes, so pilgrims who want to spend the night
can take advantage of the facilities. Another attraction of this mosque is Al Husna Tower or Al Husna
Tower which is 99 meters high. The bottom part of the tower is the Dais Radio Studio (Da'wah Islam)
and the ‘TVKU’ transmitter. While on the 2nd and 3rd floor, it is used as the Museum of Islamic
Culture, and on the 18th floor there is a Muslim Cafe that can rotate 360 degrees. 19th floor for the
tower of view, equipped with 5 binoculars that can see the city of Semarang. In the beginning of
Ramadhan 1427 H, binoculars in this mosque were used for the first time to see Rukyatul Hilal by the
Central Java Rukyah Team by using sophisticated binoculars from Boscha.
