The story of the American Dream is often told through
fictional stories, a romanticized ideal that anyone
can make it in the land of the free. There are multiple
books written about this ideal, movies squarely based
around characters gunning for that dream, yet one
person that has fully experienced the ups and downs
of living the American Dream is John Paul DeJoria. A
man who was twice homeless and went on to become a
multi-billionaire, a man who suffered loss and utilized
that pain and turned it into success. Much like the
storybooks and movies based on the American Dream,
it’s the journey that is the most fascinating and the story
of a once-homeless single father becoming a world-
renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist is what
makes John Paul DeJoria a true trailblazer.

A Dime A Dozen
John Paul Jones DeJoria
was born the second son of
an Italian immigrant father
and a Greek immigrant
mother on April 13, 1944 in
the Echo Park neighborhood
of Los Angeles, California. By
the time he was 2 years old,
his parents got divorced and
the financial and emotional
pressure of raising fell
squarely on his mother. Yet it
was at that early age where
his mother instilled the
now-famous ethos of
“Success Unshared is Failure”
when John Paul and his
brother learned a valuable
lesson. In a recent CNBC
interview John Paul tells the
story “When I was a little boy
around six years old, we
didn’t have any money. It was
my mother, my brother and I
and we would go to downtown
Los Angeles – they had
streetcars at the time – on a
streetcar. And one time at
Christmas, my mom gave us a
dime and told my brother to
hold half the dime each and
walk over to that person with
the bucket ringing the bell
and put the dime in. So we
held it half each, walked over
and popped the dime in. And
then, uh, we said to mom,
“Mom, that’s a lot of money.”
And it was in those days. Ten
cents. That could buy, you
know, three donuts in those
days. It could buy so much
stuff. She says, and I said,
“Mom, don’t we need that
money?” She says, “Yes, we
do. But that person needs it

more than we do because they
represent a lot of people that
are worse off than we are.
And just remember this, boys.
That in life, there will always
be people that are worse off
than you. So no matter what
you have, try and share a
little bit with people.” Well,
that’s always stuck with me.
Success unshared is failure.”
However, success would
still be a long way off for the
young boy from California as
the financial pressures on his
single mother became too
much and she had to send her
two boys off to East Los
Angeles to live in a foster
home. As with most foster
home children from that
time, DeJoria got involved in
street gang activity during
his high school years and was
heading down a much darker
path. Fortunately, DeJoria
saw the error of his ways
when a math teacher he
greatly respected approached
him and warned him that he
would never succeed at
anything in life if he
continued on this journey.
DeJoria listened and cleaned
up his act. Graduating from
high school in 1962 and with
no real life goals , a
17-year-old DeJoria joined the
United States Navy on the
USS Hornet and served for
two years. In 1964 he
returned to civilian life but
without the required funds
to attend college he had to
revert to various odds jobs to
make ends meet. From
caretaker to insurance
salesman, to door-to-door
shampoo salesman. In that
time DeJoria married and had
a son of his own but in 1966
his wife left him and their
two-year-old son. She took
all the money they had, as
well as the only car they
owned. As a result, DeJoria
couldn’t pay rent on his
apartment, and was forced to
vacate it and live on the street
with his infant son. What to
many may seem like a down
and out situation, DeJoria
reflects back on as something
that shaped him into the man
he is today and in a very
candid interview with CNBC
he reflects on his past
struggles.
“Well, it’s not that often
these days that I run across
someone who doesn’t know a
little bit about my
background. But when I do
and they say, “You were
actually living in your car?
You were homeless on two
occasions? Even collecting
soda pop bottles so you and
your two-and-a-half-year-old
son at the time could live?” I
said, “Yes, I did.” And it
shows you that you could do
whatever you have to do in
life – don’t have to steal from
anybody, don’t have to knock
anybody over the head, you
could do whatever you have to
in life to make it happen and
along the way, if you don’t
give up, things will get better.
And at your very, very
bottom, the only place you can
go is up anyways.”
A Time for
Change
Fast forward a few years
later and a 26-year-old
DeJoria now had a steady
job at Time Inc working as a
circulations manager for the
Lifetime, Fortune and
Sports Illustrated divisions,
yet DeJoria felt it was a
dead-end job and soon
resigned from the position.
A good friend suggested to
him to perhaps make the
leap over to the professional
beauty industry, an industry
many considered to be quite
open at the time. DeJoria
flourished in this new
environment and quickly
moved up from a sales
representative to the
national manager of two
divisions, the Scientific
Schools and Jane Salons. A
year later DeJoria would be
at a large convention in
Florida when he was
introduced to Paul Mitchell,
who at the time was a
flourishing hairdresser. The
two hit it off immediately
and nine years later the two,
tired of irking their way in
various jobs, decided to
launch their own company,
John Paul Mitchell Systems.
Of course neither of them
had any start-up capital and
when their financial backer
pulled out things looked
bleak. In the now-famous
CNBC interview, DeJoria
fondly looks back at the
humble beginnings of the
now multi-billion-dollar
company.

 “Well, we had a backer for
five hundred thousand dollars
to start John Paul Mitchell
Systems but our backer pulled
out in 1980 because our
hostages were still in Iran, oil
was through the ceiling,
unemployment in the United
States was over ten percent.
Inflation was twelve percent
and interest rates were twenty
percent. He said, “Nope, can’t
go into any new business.”
Paul was in Los Angeles at the
time. I had everything all set
up. I said, “Paul, how much
do you have?” He says, “I
don’t have a lot. I can spare
three hundred and fifty
dollars.” I got three hundred
and fifty dollars. That was
seven hundred dollars. The
first thing we had to do was to
go to our, uh, artist who did
our artwork and say, “Hey,
your artwork, these three
products. Our first three
products are a thousand
dollars. We only have seven
hundred dollars, that’s it. Can
we give you three or four
hundred [CHUCKLES] and
give you the rest later?” He
says, “Nope. Your bill’s a
thousand dollars, but I’ll take
the seven hundred dollars
from you right now cause I’ll
never see another penny.” He
took the seven hundred
dollars, so when I called the
bottle man and the silk
screener, we had no money.
But I did have a thirty-day
credit line set up. So it took
two weeks from the time the
bottles left the bottle company
to the silk screener to the
filling company, and then we
had a product. I went
knocking on doors, visiting
beauty salons and going
door-to-door selling our
product and Paul did the
same thing off the stage when
he did beauty shows. And we
kind of worked together at the
grassroots level. Finally when
the bill was due – the first bill
was due in two weeks. We
didn’t have enough to pay the
bill, so it was, “The check’s in
the mail.” Two days later, we
had just enough to pay the
bill and we ran behind for
two years. We knew we made
it at John Paul Mitchell
Systems two years after we
were in business. And that’s
because after two years, we
had enough money to pay our
bill on time. Not pay it off,
but pay all of our bills on
time and have an extra
couple thousand dollars in
the bank. Then we knew we
really made it.”
Tragedy and
Tequila
With John Paul Mitchell
Systems steadily growing
into a professional beauty
powerhouse, tragedy struck
in 1989 as DeJoria’s business
partner, co-founder and
friend Paul Mitchell sadly lost
his battle with cancer leaving
DeJoria as the sole owner of
the booming business. It was
emotionally tough on
DeJoria, but once again the
man who used to sell pop
caps to support himself and
his infant son, he soldiered
on to make sure that the
company grew even more in
the memory of his dear
friend. Yet his next business
venture would not be in the
beauty industry but instead
his focus would turn to
tequila.
“In 1989, I was with a
friend of mine – Martin. And
we were sipping the normal
tequilas of the day. And we
decided there had to be a
better tequila because you
have to hold your breath with
most of them or mix them with
something or just do a shot
and go [SIGHS]. We were in
the architectural business – so
on his next buying trip down
to Mexico to buy pavers and
furniture to sell the architects,
he went down there with my
builder Jack who was building
a house for me at the time,
and came back with these two
great bottles of tequila. They
were really good. Smoother
than anything we tasted. He
said, “You know, JP? I could
go down there and change this
formula to be even smoother.
And by the way, look at this
great bottle I found down
there. And I can make a great
label.” Martin was a fabulous
designer so he did it and I
said, “Well, let’s go and make
an ecological product.” He
said, “JP? How about recycled
bottles?” So we came up with a
product where every single
bottle was recycled of Patrone.
All the paper and cardboard
used was recycled. And what
we would do with our product
line is present it and
introduce it. But it was very
expensive to make. We
introduced it in 1989 at
thirty-seven dollars a bottle.
Very expensive. Normal
tequila was ten dollars a
bottle, five dollars a bottle.
And it took a while to take off.
And my feeling was this – it
was so good that if we didn’t
sell one bottle and I bought
one thousand cases, twelve

thousand bottles. If we didn’t
sell one bottle for the next ten
years, everybody I knew –
Christmas – anything. You
had a holiday, you got a bottle
of Patrone. Christening for a
child, whatever it was, you
know, “Happy Birthday,
here’s Patrone” because I
would be proud of it.”
The expensive tequila
brand took a while to take off
but today it is a global brand
and considerably larger than
Paul Mitchell. Once again
DeJoria proved to be a
shrewd businessman but
with a clear goal and values
attached to smart business
decisions. He is also the
founder of more than a dozen
other businesses from the
House of Blues to DeJoria
Diamonds. He is interested in
a range of industries like life
sciences, telecoms and
yachts. DeJoria, as a
philanthropist, has signed a
‘Giving Pledge’ along with
150 billionaires to give 50% of
his earnings for the
improvement of the world.
He supports over 160
charities worldwide. An avid
animal lover, he vowed never
to test his products on
animals, and instead opted to
test on himself. Today, he
lives in a $50 million estate in
Malibu, California, with all
the luxuries one can think of.
Even though he is in his 70s,
he still works hard, and gives
back as much as he can. All
his business decisions are
always in line with
philanthropic aspects. He
believes that “in the end,
everything will be ok, and, if
it’s not ok, it’s not the end.”
He also believes that when
you do something to help
somebody, that’s what real
success is all about.
Reflecting back on how two
bottles of shampoo forever
changed this DeJoria says
“The great thing is to know
that I was able to start out
with a few bottles of shampoo
and because of all the money I
made off of that, help change
the world and make it a better
place to live and make money
off of that to start these other
businesses. It’s one of the most
wonderful feelings you could
ever imagine especially when
you’re able to give back and
know as you succeed, the
world succeeds with you.
When I start new businesses,
what I have to keep in mind is
whoever the people I’m

SOMETHING SURPRISING
I’m trilingual and speak fluent Spanish and Tagalog.
Tagalog is the language of the Philippines and I am first
generation Filipino-American!

MY HOBBIES
Some of my hobbies include golfing. I’ve played my entire
life and I’m still an avid golfer. I love taking your money on
the course!

TURN ON
My biggest turn on is a man with facial hair. I love a good
ol’ beard and when a man opens the car door for you is also
another turn on. I can appreciate a man that knows chivalry
isn’t dead.

What turns me off the most is when a man acts cheap!
Women notice that! I went on a date once and the guy
tipped 10% on a check with receiving great service and I just
had to kick him to the curb!

TAKING ME ON A DATE
I like my dates short and sweet. I prefer a good
burger spot where there’s games like corn hole. Keep it
entertaining with good conversation and a few laughs. Feed

My perfect man is 6’2, athletic, full beard, gentleman, has
a sense of humor, is sweet but stern so he can put me in

This year I’m looking forward to competing as a pro in
the WBFF in hopes of taking a world title. The WBFF is a
beauty and fitness federation. I am also working on my golf
game to become a Pro in the LPGA.

I am a homebody. I’d much rather curl up on the couch
and cook dinner than go out and get hammered at a club.
One thing about myself that I wish more people knew was
that I love cooking! I make an amazing homemade pot pie.

My celeb crush is Robert Downey Jr. I’m drawn to older
men. You know what they say, “the older the berry, the
sweeter the juice” or something like that.

OUTSIDE OF MODELING
When I’m not busy modeling I love keeping busy with
activities like the gun range, the golf range and the gym. I
love the occasional Dave & Buster’s too!

2019 was an amazing year for series, from Netflix’s The

Witcher to Amazon Prime’s The Boys to Disney +’s
The Mandalorian. With such a huge variety of amazing
shows catering for every need, will 2020 live up to the
high standards of last year? These twelve shows might
just make 2020 the best year ever for series.

Messiah
Bringing in the new decade from the 1st of January, Netflix’s Messiah tells the story of a mysterious man
that arrives in America claiming to be the chosen one, the true messiah. This chosen one starts attracting
international attention and followers through acts of public disruption and it’s up to a CIA officer to
investigate this mysterious stranger and uncover if he is indeed a divine entity or a dangerous con artist. This
intense political and sci-fi thriller is set to get the heart racing and leave the viewer to make up their own mind
about the authenticity of the new messiah.

AJ and the Queen

After the massive success of RuPaul’s Drag Races, the multi-talented performer returns with a scripted series
for Netflix. RuPaul stars as Robert Lee, a.k.a. Ruby Red, a career drag queen who has hopes and dreams of
finally opening her own drag club. After being swindled by a charismatic con artist, Ruby is forced to pick
up the pieces and hit the road, doing shows in order to get her money back. Along the way, Ruby meets AJ,
a scrappy orphan and the two come together for a road trip show you’ll never forget. Although the premise
sounds painfully familiar, the unpredictability of RuPaul is sure to keep this show interesting.

The New Pope

A straight sequel to the Paolo Sorrentino series, The Young Pope, continues the story of Pope Pius XIII,
again played by Jude Law, going head to head with the titular new Pope John Paul III, played by veteran
John Malkovich. Although details are scarce as of writing, the trailers hint to two very different pope’s going
head to head. Law’s young and audaciously modern pope compared to the old school ways of Malkovich’s
more old testament pope. It has all the potential for high drama and the promise of seeing Sharon Stone and
Marilyn Manson making guest appearances makes this show even more enticing.

The Outsider
Stephen King’s novels have always been ripe for TV and film adaptations and his most recent novel The
Outsider is no exception. This new HBO adaptation is the ultimate tale of otherworldly nightmares creeping
into our existence. It starts off seeming like a standard true crime story, but this is only the start of the
nightmare. The Outsider begins with the discovery of a brutally murdered child in a small Georgia town. The
case hits local detective Ralph Anderson extra hard, as he’s still grieving the sudden death of his own son. As
Ralph and his fellow cops gather evidence and interview witnesses, a stark, disturbing, but unquestionable
picture comes together.

Duncanville
Duncanville is a new animated sitcom from Parks and Rec star Amy Poehler and Simpson’s alumni Mike
Scully. It’s centred around a spectacularly average 15-year-old boy with a rich fantasy life, and the people in
his world. Like most 15-year-olds, Duncan can see adulthood on the horizon: money, freedom, cars and girls;
but the reality is more like: always being broke, driving with one’s mom sitting shotgun and babysitting one’s
sister. He’s not exceptional, but he has a wild imagination in which he’s never anything less than amazing.
Duncanville is looking very promising especially with its strong voice cast of Modern Family star Ty Burrel,
Rashida Jones, Wiz Khalifa and Poehler herself.

 Little America
Apple TV+ has been mildly disappointing since launch but that
looks set to change with the release of Little America, a series
inspired by the true stories featured in Epic Magazine about
the inspiring and heartfelt stories of immigrants in America.
Hollywood power couple Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani,
alongside Lee Eisenberg will write and produce this anthology
series, so it’s guaranteed to have a lot of laughs, tears and a boatload
of humanity. This might just be the show to make Apple TV+ an
essential purchase.
The Falcon and The Winter
Soldier
Disney+ already had a huge hit on their channel with the supremely
popular Star Wars story, The Mandalorian, largely thanks to the
ridiculously cute “Baby Yoda”. Now Disney turns to its other big
franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to establish itself as a
major streaming service. Picking up after the events of Avengers:
Endgame, The Falcon and Winter Soldier will follow the lives of
Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes post the loss of Steve Rogers a.k.a.
Captain America. With the mantle or shield of Cap passed on to
Wilson, we will experience the story and struggle of the former
Falcon as he attempts to become the next Captain America.
Normal People
Based on the incredibly popular and fantastic novel of the same
name by Irish author Sally Rooney, Normal People explores the
fascinating connection between two people through various
stages of their lives. At school, Connell and Marianne pretend
not to know each other. He’s a popular and well-adjusted, star of
the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely
private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her
housekeeping job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible
connection grows between the two teenagers—one they are
determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity
College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social
world while Connell hangs at the side-lines, shy and uncertain.
Throughout their years in college, Marianne and Connell circle
one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but
always magnetically, and irresistibly drawn back together. Then, as
she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning
elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to
save the other.
Nine Perfect Strangers
Another book adaptation sees Liane Moriarty’s seminal novel
appear on the small screen to deliver her insanely great read to
the masses. Starring Nicole Kidman as a spa owner who has nine
strangers attend her spa for relaxation spread over ten days and get
way more than they signed up for. Some are there to lose weight,
some are there to get a reboot on life, some are there for reasons
they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and
pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these
ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could
imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.
To Binge In 2020
Run
Very little is known so far about HBO’s new
series Run, yet there is a lot of hype behind this
new show. Mostly because of the involvement
of multi award-winning writer and actor Phoebe
Waller-Bridges. Run sees Ruby, a woman living
a humdrum existence, getting a text inviting her
to fulfill a youthful pact promising true love and
self-reinvention by stepping out of her life to take
a journey with her oldest flame. The series stars
Merrit Wever and Donhnall Gleeson as the star
crossed lover with Waller-Bridge co-executive
producing and co-starring. It hosts a stunning
cast and incredible writing talent behind it. Run
looks set to continue Phoebe’s amazing run of
cleaning up at the Emmys.
Star Trek: Picard
One of the most surprising announcements
from last year was the return of Star Trek’s
favorite captain, the legendary Jean-Luc Picard.
Set 18 years after Star Trek: Nemesis, when
Picard is well into his retired life away from the
Starfleet, spending his days on a vineyard, but
his peace is shattered when a woman who is in
serious danger asks him for help. It came as a
massive surprise to all Star Trek fans, but one of
the most heart-warming moments was seeing
Picard himself, Sir Patrick Steward announce the
reveal itself as well as his return to the seminal
role. A big question on everyone’s lips, however,
is which Picard will we see, the peaceful and wise
Picard from the original series or the action-first
reckless Picard from the films. The answer could
make or break the show.
Snowpiercer
Initially, an underappreciated 2013 sci-fi film
starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton about
survivors on a train that endlessly circles the
post-apocalyptic, frozen earth. It’s a ridiculous
premise but the politics and social commentary
of the film was masterfully handled by Korean
director Bong Joon-Ho. TBS’ Snowpiercer
will pick up seven years after the events of the
original film. Not much has changed. The titular
train driving the remaining members of Earth in
a post-apocalyptic world is still operating under
some warped socio-economic structures. Ed
Harris’ de facto conductor from the original film
has been replaced by Jennifer Connelly, who
spends her time ensuring that everything aboard
Snowpiercer is going to plan. There will be no
uprisings from the lower class on her watch, well,
at least not right away.

Without a doubt the most anticipated
game this year, Cyberpunk 2077 is from the
amazing developers of The Witcher series,
CD Projekt Red. Based on the tabletop game,
Cyberpunk 2020, featuring a massive open
world filled with missions, NPC’s, a boatload
of weapons and abilities as well as a gripping
story. You’ll play as V, an agent that takes on
various tasks in Night City. Rampant with
homelessness, corruption and all-out gang
warfare, V will have to step outside of the law
to bring justice to this morally lost city. And of
course it will feature Keanu “You’re Breath-
taking” Reeves. Instant game of the year.

HALO INFINITE
Release Date: Q4 2020
Platform: Xbox One, Xbox X Series, PC
Not a lot is known so far of the next iteration
in the highly-rated Halo series, but one thing
we do know is that it will feature the return
of series mainstay Master Chief. Many were
disappointed with Halo 5’s story but developers
have reassured us that Infinite will be heavily
focused on the mighty Spartan. With the release
date set to late 2020, many are speculating
that it will be a launch title for the new Xbox X
Series consoles, but rest assured Xbox One and
PC owners, it is definitely launching on current-
gen consoles and on Game Pass to boot.

DYING LIGHT 2
Release Date: Q2 2020
Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC
The sequel to the 2015 surprise parkour-filled,
zombie slasher hit, Dying Light 2 which was
announced way back at E3 2018 will finally
reach our consoles in 2020. Expect the same
crazy parkour action around a brand new city,
with updated visuals and even more terrifying
zombies. Throughout the game, players will
have to make a series of choices, each of which
will have unforeseen consequences. The
developer Techland has also promised a much
larger map as well as support and potential
upgrades for the new generation of consoles
that are around the corner.

MARVEL’S AVENGERS
Release Date: May 15, 2020
Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Stadia
When initially announced at E3 2019, many
people were skeptical of the new Avenger’s
game from Crystal Dynamics (developer of
the recent Tomb Raider Trilogy). Many felt
the gameplay looked off, the characters looked
weird and many feared it might just be a quick
Marvel Cash Grab. However, as more of the
game has been revealed, the excitement for the
Avengers has grown exponentially. Marvel’s
Avengers will begin at the events of A-Day,
the unveiling of the new Avengers HQ in
San Francisco. However, after a quick turn of
events which results in the death of civilians,
the Avengers officially disband. Fast forward
five years later, and all superheroes are now
outlawed. However, a recent world event
puts humanity at risk, and the only hope is to
reassemble the Avengers.

After the massively successful return of the
Doom franchise in 2016, id Software returns
with the direct sequel to one of the goriest and
most action-packed games in the last decade.
Experience a combination of speed and power
as you rip your way across dimensions as the
epically named DOOM slayer. Eternal will bring
the same fast-paced action and ferocity of the
2016 iteration and pump it up to eleven. Bigger
demons, more powerful guns and multiple
ways to tear the otherworld demons apart is
but a handful of reasons to get excited for the
granddaddy of the FPS.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE

One of the most celebrated and iconic games in
videogame history finally gets its big remake and
RPG fans around the world cannot wait. With
a complete graphical overhaul as well as brand
new battle systems, Final Fantasy VII Remake
looks absolutely incredible and it’s hard to
believe it’s based on the 1997 original. Although
the look and systems have changed dramatically,
developer Square Enix has made sure to stick to
the original story and keep in place the elements
that have made this game an all-time classic. It’s
time to return to Midgar and relive the magical
experience all over again.

THE LAST OF US PART 2

Release Date: May 29, 2020
Platform: PlayStation 4
Developer’s Naughty Dog have cemented
themselves as one of the premier developers
over the last two console generations, delivering
gamers like the amazing Uncharted series that set
a new level for adventure games. With Uncharted
being the fun globe-trotting adventure, it’s their
other classic The Last of Us that has stuck with
gamers emotionally and when the sequel was
announced many a gamer cheered as they knew
it would be another emotionally draining venture
through the post-apocalypse with a much older
Ellie. The game looks amazing and the story
is as heavy as ever, so don’t be surprised when
this shows up on a lot of ‘game of the year 2020’
awards come December.

VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE

The original was a clunky mess, but was
arguably one of the most beloved RPG’s on
PC back in the early 2000s. For years fans
have been screaming for a sequel and finally
in 2020 their screams have been heard. Based
on the popular tabletop game, Vampire: The
Masquerade, Bloodlines 2 follows the story of a
human from Seattle, who wakes up as a vampire
after being killed. Upon realizing they are now a
vampire, players must upgrade their powers and
join one of the five blood clans. The wealth of
choices and side quests is staggering and looks
to live up to the 2004 classic.

NIOH 2
Release Date: March 13, 2020
Platform: PlayStation 4
Described by many as Dark Souls with samurais,
yet the original Nioh was so much more. Yes it
shared a lot of similarities with the Souls series,
but it brought a complex battle system, a deep
and varied upgrade system and a unique story
drenched in ancient Japanese lore. The sequel
will feature various upgrades to the already
popular systems and will be set in a new and
equally dangerous Sengoku era. Expect a tough-
as-nails action RPG that will push even the most
seasoned Souls player to the edge.

MICROSOFT FLIGHT
SIMULATOR

The last decade was not kind to flight simulator
fanatics, with titles released few and far between,
but Microsoft is set to change that in 2020 with a
brand new entry into their every popular Flight
Simulator series. Expect the same ultra-realistic
controls and plane behaviors from previous
entries, set to photo-realistic graphics, captured
using tons and tons of geographical information
to create a near-perfect representation of planet
earth, some might even be lucky enough to fly
over their own houses. Add in the challenge of
real-life weather patterns and behaviors so you
know potential pilot wannabes are in for an
absolute treat.

WATCH DOGS LEGION

After a dreary first entry in the series, the
original Watch Dogs had so much potential and
with the release of Watch Dogs 2 developer,
Ubisoft almost achieved its full potential.
However, with Watch Dogs Legion, those early
promises seem to be fully delivered. A radical
departure from the original concept Legion
takes place in a post-Brexit London. The game
will follow a London-based hacker group,
known as DedSec, as they try to fight the new
London authority. Unlike the previous entries,
there will be no single hero character, but
instead you can recruit anyone in London to be
part of the hacker group. So far our favorite is
the mild-mannered granny.

GHOST OF TSUSHIMA
Release Date: Mid 2020
Platform: PlayStation 4
After the incredible debut trailer earlier last year,
The Ghost of Tsushima has been high on every
PlayStation owner’s list. From the gorgeous
landscape to the epic samurai showdowns,
this game stood out from every single Sony
announcement. Ghost of Tsushima is set in
1274 and explores the story of Jin Sakai. In the
game, Japan is invaded by the Mongol people,
who place them under extreme oppression.
Players will have to master the way of the
Ghost, in order to free Japan from the grips of
Mongols. Featuring a beautifully rendered open
world that can be explored without the use of
waypoints or guidance objectives, this promises
to be a sleeper hit for the PS4 goliath.

ELDEN RING
Release Date: TBC, 2020
Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC
From the creators of Dark Souls, Bloodborne
and Sekiro comes one of the most exciting titles
of 2020, even though we hardly know anything
about the game apart from an announcement
trailer. However, it was the details revealed
in the announcement trailer that got people
talking, as developer From Software will create
their first truly open-world game but also team
up with Game of Thrones maestro George
R.R. Martin to create a unique world and story.
Considering the fantastic games From has
created combined with the story-driven skills
of Martin, this could quite possibly be their
greatest game yet.

newest edition of the Panigale V4
which we think looks absolutely
amazing with its sporty appeal and
agile demeanor. We’ve always been
avid fans of Ducati and this latest
installment has us wide-mouthed
with awe - and drooling like an
infant. It’s easy on the eye, sexier
than most sports bikes currently
on the market and nobody would
blame you for jumping on the
Panigale and pretending you’re the
Flash! This baby really is the full
package, come take a look.
The 2020 version of the Panigale V4
boosts performance even further than
before and takes track riding to the
next level for amateurs and pros alike.
There’s a new series of refinements
that makes the bike easier to ride while
also ensuring it still has ample
handling and a sturdy kick right from
the first tug of the throttle.
The latest edition also comes with
an Aero Pack which provides enhanced
airflow protection and improves
overall vehicle stability on the road
which seemed to enhance our
confidence behind the handlebar even
further. The unique thing about bikes
like this is that all the parts are
carefully made and integrated to create
a system that works in unison as
opposed to an engine on wheels
designed to burn-up a straight line.
What’s also cool is how the front frame
can modify stiffness providing a better
front-end ‘feel’ particularly at extreme
lean angles.
In their mission to create the
perfect Panigale Ducati and Ducati
Corse engineers have crunched the
feedback from customers all over the
world and their analysis has led to a
series of aerodynamic, chassis,
electronic control and Ride by Wire
mapping changes and refinements.
This means we now have a bike with
improvements all-round but what we
really enjoy is the increased stability
and turn-in speed that make the bike
much easier to close corners. But wait,
the good news doesn’t stop there. The
Panigale V4 is an awesome base in its
own right but there is also an S version
that comes with Öhlins event-based
electronic control which uses a
second-generation Öhlins Smart EC
(Electronic Control) system that
exploits its full potential.

AT ITS CORE
The V engine
For Ducati, the V4 layout at 90° is the utmost
expression of sportiness for a motorcycle engine. It
is no coincidence that it is the same solution used
in the MotoGP Desmosedici engines. The 90° V
layout of the cylinders creates a natural balancing
of first-order forces without the need to resort to a
balance shaft to eliminate the vibrations that
notoriously entail increases in weight and power
absorption. In addition to this primary benefit,
which is extremely important for the reliability
and mechanical efficiency of an engine that
reaches rotation speeds greater than 14,000 rpm,
there are others that make the configuration
chosen by Ducati the most technically refined.

Its compactness
Compared to a classic in-line four-cylinder, the
lateral compactness of the V-engine allows greater
centralization of the masses and makes it possible
to limit the weight on the front end of the bike.
Furthermore, the shorter crankshaft generates a
smaller gyroscopic effect. All these aspects have a
positive impact on the bike’s dynamics, helping to
make it light and fast when changing directions.
The large space available between the V of the
cylinders made it possible to position the water
pump and have a large volume airbox (12.8 liters) to
allow the Desmosedici Stradale to breathe better.

Integration of engine and chassis

The optimal integration of engine and chassis is a
fundamental concept behind every one of Ducati’s
projects. That is why the Desmosedici Stradale
was developed to be mounted and rotated
backwards just like the Ducati MotoGP engines.
This format optimizes weight distribution and
shifts the swinging arm pivot forwards as much as
possible. The Desmosedici Stradale was also
designed to be a structural element of the frame.
Connections to the main frame were added to the
front of the upper casing and in the head of the rear
bank. The engine block also acts as a connection
for the rear suspension and swinging arm.

THE EXTRA BITS
Complete titanium exhaust assembly
Made exclusively by Akrapovič with the Ducati experience, it is the most
advanced racing assembly available on the market. Each section of the system
is manufactured in a special titanium alloy that is both lightweight and
resistant to high temperatures, allowing for an overall reduction in the bike’s
weight. Once installed on the bike, the exhaust dramatically increases the
already excellent weight-to-power ratio of the Panigale, for breathtaking
accelerations and stretches. Thanks to its experience, Ducati Corse has
developed the qualities of the motorcycle and exhaust to their maximum
levels to create a perfect synergy, specifically for this exhaust, recalibrating
the many and fundamental electronic aids: DTC, DWC, DPL and Slide on
demand.

Dry clutch kit

Just like in MotoGP, where the only thing that matters is utmost
performance, the dry clutch is made available for the other V4 models (it
comes standard on the Panigale V4 R). This is an STM EVO-SBK clutch made
from billet aluminum with housing and a 48-tooth plate pack. The plates are
9 driven and 9 lined with a diameter of 138 mm. When racing on the track
there are important benefits in ease of handling. Specifically, the dry clutch
ensures a more effective slipper function, even during the most aggressive
downshifts, and greater fluidity during all “off-throttle” stages. In addition,
the “mechanical” engine brake level can be customized by choosing a
different secondary spring from those available in the catalog.
Other important advantages are the absence of resistance from the engine oil
and cleaner oil since the plate wear dust is not conveyed into the lubrication
circuit. The racing character of the dry clutch is an exciting added benefit for
the most passionate Ducatistas and sports bike enthusiasts.

Magnesium rims
The unmatched lightweight performance of forged magnesium meets style
– a signature 9-spoke design that combines class, high performance and
weight saving. Be aware though, this set of rims is approved for single-seat
use only.

The handgrips
Inspired by the racing world, these handgrips ensure an excellent grip in
every riding situation and are built to avoid accidental slipping of the hand -
and to reduce the vibrations felt.

Carbon tank cover

This is a splendid detail that embellishes the front of the new Panigale V4
tank in a way that only carbon fiber can. The finishing and lines of this
accessory are perfectly integrated into the racing look of the latest bike made
at Borgo Panigale.

Adjustable rider footpegs in aluminum

These are developed thanks to the experience of Ducati Corse and the skillful
productive care of Rizoma. They’re made of a high-quality anodized
aluminum alloy that maintains its original appearance over time. They are
adjustable in six positions allowing the rider to find the position that best
suits their build and riding style. These footpegs are also equipped with
fold-away brake and gearchange pedals to minimize the risk of breakage in
the event of a slip. They use the standard DQS, which can be configured both
as a traditional shift and as a reversed/racing shift which makes them an
essential accessory for the most demanding riders.

Range Rover Velar SVAD
S’Charged Thunder
I’ll now attempt to unpack in Land Rover’s increasingly fragmented
vernacular. At its core, this flagship Velar emerges from the Special
Vehicle Operations skunkworks but drops the ‘Racing’ to strike a
level balance with luxury. In other words, to enhance the Velar’s
current characteristics.
Mostly, it must be said, by inheriting the five liter supercharged V8
which is a doyen of the JLR family with the same power and torque as in
the recently launched F Pace SVR. I won’t pretend that this doesn’t have
the single biggest effect on the Velar’s personality grabbing the
aggression, noise and carbon emission knobs and giving them a full

xury and
4.3 seconds
and a top speed of 170mph shape up well but are by no means
benchmarks against peers who have a narrower (read sportier) focus.
The hairy chested supercharged V8 provides all its violent thwack
below 4,000rpm even though the needle will continue to climb to
6,900rpm. You end up reveling in the noise or enjoying how the
suspension compresses under acceleration but it doesn’t dry the eyeballs
in the way a Porsche Macan Turbo does. And I keep thinking that the V8
isn’t as limber as some of the competition’s straight sixes.
Weight is a factor 660 pounds heavier than the Macan which is
slightly disappointing given the company’s song and dance about
aluminum construction. But then again this and the smaller capacity
GLC 63 AMG are among the few remaining V8s in the segment, the
blunt appeal of which should not be underestimated.
If you want lairy, head over to Jaguar and put your name down for
the F Pace SVR. The Velar won’t send as much power to the rear wheels
and cooks its uprated brakes rather quickly no option of carbon
ceramics here.
It’s a fine enough chassis that distinguishes itself from other Velars
thanks to beefier anti roll bars and a modified Active Rear Locking
Differential. On a twisty road, Velar’s air suspension remains confidently
flat but it’s less polished on a straight road; the steering wheel jiggles and
writhes around in your hand almost constantly and if you look in the
rear view mirror you’ll notice that your backseat passengers are
wobbling about like milk tarts. Over a long distance, I imagine this is
going to create great discomfort for one’s forearms which is a great pity
because without it this could be one of the more relaxing cars on sale. To
soothe things the autonomous drive systems are great, I mean really
great. On roads leading in and out of country roads, I counted 25
seconds of hands off driving before its system required some human
intervention.
Inside things are intentionally less sporty than they could be. Think
deep seats with lots of adjustability and leather that feels like the cows
were raised on a diet of butter. There’s a massage function, heated
steering wheel and heated and cooled seats. Lots of nearby storage,

although less than a Discovery, and high quality
materials from floor to roof lining. Hard, gritty
plastics, even in those hard to reach places where
we’d normally forgive a company for saving a few
bucks, simply don’t feature.
The Touch Pro Duo system which groups all
climate and entertainment features on the bottom
screen and uses the top screen for vehicle settings,
debuted on Velar and I still find myself nodding
appreciatively every time I lay hands on it. If that
looks a little too daunting, you can still do most
things with the two physical knobs or the chunky
buttons on the steering wheel.
The Velar’s appeal has always been the sleek
proportions, as well as the way it conceals those
expected off road credentials in an aerodynamic
suit. You’re getting a proper Range Rover experience
without all the, often superfluous, compromises.
And it’s priced well, a manageable and tangible
increase up from the likes of the Velar D300 HSE
which has none of the character that this has in
heaps, despite a bit more torque.
Still, the Velar SVAD is not perfect. How could it
be when it tries to be so many things all at once? I
wish it had better body control for starters, but it’s
still a lot of luxurious metal you can hear thundering
along from a mile away.

It’s really awesome to have you Aleen, could you tell our readers a little
bit more about your background and how it’s come to inspire others?
My name is Aleen N. Johnson (Aly) and I am THEFITPIZZAGIRL.
Now that my days are over in the U.S. Air Force, I have never been more
hungry and determined for my future fitness and modeling career to launch.
My main purpose is using fitness and health to promote mental health
awareness and body positivity empowerment. Due to certain circumstances
and childhood trauma... my future decisions, actions and attitude could have
led me to a lifetime of endless misery and self-harm but throughout the years
I have tried my hardest to push through by not only sharing my experiences
with others but by promoting a healthy lifestyle mentally, emotionally,
physically and spiritually.
Growing up, I was sexually assaulted multiple times and as the notorious
‘new girl’ I was bullied by several students throughout middle school and
high school. Due to the multiple sexual assaults at the age of 6, I became very
promiscuous and was continuously judged and ridiculed by my family and
others; leaving me feeling out of place, confused and unworthy. Due to my
depression and anxiety, I started self-harming and isolating at the age of 13. At
the age of 15, I attempted my first suicide due to years of continuous bullying,
verbal abuse and harassment from other students. Instead of seeking help, I
kept it all inside because I did not feel like anyone would actively take the
proper routes of helping me on a personal level. I did not feel like I had a
purpose. I did not feel worthy. At that time in my life, I felt like there was
nothing left for me here. Before my senior year of high school, my family had
moved to a different school district and that was my chance at redemption.
2012 was the year I stopped going by the name of Aleen. I was now Aly
and all I wanted was to be completely invisible. My mission was to graduate
and make a life for myself somewhere else. During this time, I decided that I
was going to serve my country. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I had no
idea what branch I wanted to join. All I knew was that if I was going to live in
this country, I was going to serve it! Within a few months of graduation, I
signed a contract to the U.S Air Force and shipped out on the 19th of August
2013 from Pittsburgh, PA. I told myself that once I joined, my past wouldn’t
follow me, but you can’t hide from your own darkness. The shadow follows
you and no matter how hard you want to get help, it doesn’t take away the
stigma behind mental illnesses. 20 to 22 veterans commit suicide every single
day and yet we still feel ‘uncomfortable’ or make people feel uncomfortable
when they talk about their problems. So many of us suffer from battle
wounds called PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc. and yet changes aren’t made
because of the unfortunate invisibility of these wounds.
As service members we hide our pain behind temporary satisfactions
because taking care of our mental health could not only target us as incapable
and unreliable in our work environment but it could affect future TDYs, PCS
locations and deployments. As service members, a lot of us feel helpless
because we aren’t given the chance to ‘prove’ our stability. Instead, we are
given codes and holds on our careers for a certain timeline and it is all based
on another service member’s personal judgment about our heart-wrenching
and unique situations. We are treated like a checklist and the only way to get

out of the ‘mandatory’ leadership check ins... is have to ‘prove’ our sanity yet
again. On the 13th of July 2017, I attempted my second suicide. Throughout the
experience I felt numb, comforted by some, abandoned by others, scared and
relieved; all at the same time. I did not plan my suicide attempt and I cringe
when people assume there’s always signs and a ‘perfect plan’ because sometimes
you just snap.
We invest so much time into people that make us feel good in the moment
and then burn a hole into our souls. I was not meaningless but I was filling my
life with meaningless actions and temporary people. I snapped. Physical pain
was more appealing to me than getting help for my mental or emotional pain. I
never wanted to be anyone’s problem so I pleaded and I begged the person who
had pulled me away from the ledge. I begged them to let me jump. I screamed at
the top of my lungs in a burst of tears, “LET ME DIE! I WANT TO F*CKING
DIE, WHY WON’T YOU JUST LET ME DIE!?”
Within hours, I was driven to the ER asking everyone “why am I being
hospitalized? There’s nothing wrong with me!” I did not think that the situation
at hand was serious, because my life at that point, did not matter to me. I did not
matter to me. Within 24 hours I was checked in to Ft. Belvoir Psychiatric Center
and spent the next few days frustrated and once again isolated physically and
mentally.
Days later I stepped out of those hospital doors and I was embarrassed. I felt
like I had an arrow pointed down at me screaming “FAILURE!” - Failure at life,
failure at making others happy, failure at making myself happy and failure at
killing myself because I had no idea how I would ever recover from this. You go
from caring about too much to driving yourself into a state of mind where
nothing else matters. I cried every day until I built up the strength to say, “If I’m
going to live... it won’t be like this.” It took more than a week and it took more
than a month but I stopped lying to myself. I stopped allowing others to claim
my worth. It has not been easy, it is not easy, and I know it won’t get easier as the
years go by, but I don’t want it to be. I will say that being a high-functioning
individual with mental illnesses can be a blessing and a curse. We are expected
to ‘have it all together’ therefore we tell ourselves that not feeling anything at all;
pain or happiness is better than reliving our traumas, but I don’t believe that to
be true. You spend your whole life trying to build indestructible walls for your
‘house’ (life) so that no one can see your pain but you forget to build an
indestructible foundation and a reliable roof.
January of 2018 I began to use fitness as my outlet. I had never worked out
with a barbell in my life but I knew that I needed a change, I knew I needed to
make a change, and I was willing to take risks. During this time I was growing
my brand on Instagram and gained 60k followers in 6 months. I was not only
dedicated to my fitness and health but promoting body positivity and self-love
through my various photoshoots. At times I have not always received the
most supportive comments throughout this journey online but it hasn’t
stopped me. I’ve been called multiple names, I’ve been accused of selling porn
by others and I’ve received awful comments about my body, but one thing I
always remind myself is that only the insecure will judge you. They don’t love
themselves, they aren’t happy with themselves and therefore it will always be
easier for them to reflect their own personal judgments on someone else. Life
is not easy by any means, but if we learn, grow and accept the pain, the
wounds, and ourselves... we will begin to appreciate the beauty that is.

What do you love most about your career?
What I love most about my career is having the
opportunity to express myself in any way, shape or form.
Although I am thankful to have served my country in the
United States Air Force, there were certain regulations when
it came to how I could express myself. Now that I am a
veteran, I get to finally sit back and ask “who does Aleen want
to be?” and I think that’s such a powerful question to ask
yourself when you live in a world that expects you to conform.

What’s the most challenging thing about your career?

My biggest challenge and a challenge I believe a lot of
individuals face, is the constant pollution of negative
comments and threads on social media. Growing up, I was
very self-conscious due to years of bullying and harassment
from others. I know first-hand what it feels like to be told that I
am not skinny enough or pretty enough for my current career.
I’ve also been told that I am no longer a good influence on
others or well respected due to the amount of clothing I
choose to wear - or not to wear. This hits home for me because
no one should ever feel or be told that they are not good
enough because of a career choice that does not harm
themselves or anyone else.

What motivates you to work hard?

Those supporting me. Honestly, I could not have done any
of this without the unconditional love and support of others
and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. On July the
13th, 2017, I had a suicide attempt. Like many others, I struggle
with invisible wounds called PTSD, depression, and anxiety. If
it wasn’t for those by my side, I would have never believed in
my own worth. I told myself “if I’m going to live, it won’t be
like this” and therefore I make it a point to speak up and reach
out to those around me! We are all worthy of love and need to
be reminded of this daily.

Who is your hero?

Donald Watson

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it

be?
My perspective. I tend to be impulsively pessimistic due to
my past and I know it has held me back a lot. Thankfully, this is
something that I can work on and I do my best to work on it
daily!

What really makes you angry?

Slow drivers in the fast lane!

What is the one thing that will always make you smile?
Meeting open-minded individuals like myself who are
willing to seek and accept other people’s perspectives
and ways of life.

How would your friends describe you?

Unapologetically fearless.

Who knows you best?

My German Shepherd, her name is Zella. When
I came back from my deployment in 2017, I knew I
needed a companion and she’s been by my side ever
since; I really don’t know what I would do without her.

What is your favorite family tradition?

Watching A Christmas Story on Christmas Eve.
It’s my absolute favorite Christmas movie to recite!

What are your hobbies?

Working out and eating carbs.

Favorite place to go on vacation?

Mora’s Pizza in Wynwood, FL. Every time I travel
to Miami, I make it a point to visit Mora and his shop.
Nothing but positive vibes and delicious food. Last
time I visited, we both went to work in the kitchen
and he taught me a few tricks!

Favorite item of clothing?

To be honest, I absolutely despise clothes. They
never fit quite right and they don’t fold themselves, so
they are basically useless!

Favorite food?
Plant based pizza.

What is the most daring thing you have ever done?

Getting my face tattooed! A lot of people hope it’s
fake or ask me how I’m ever going to get a job, but I
assure you it is 100% real and I’ve had no problem
paying my bills. My favorite quote is “if the whole
world was blind, how many people would you
impress?” and this speaks volumes because naturally
a lot of us judge based on looks. I agree, it isn’t easy to
resist, but I also believe that if we were all a little more
open minded and willing to look beyond those
outward appearances, the experiences and potential
wisdom obtained from others would be worth it.

What is the craziest thing you’ve done in the name

of love?
I had gotten married after a month of dating
someone lmao. It didn’t work out, which is more
than likely to be expected but I also learned a lot
about myself!

Do you collect anything?

Beer koozies and stickers.

If you had a warning label, what would it say?

Don’t come home without snacks!

What is the one thing you will never do again?

I will never drink Captain Morgan again, need I
say more?

What three things do you do most of each day?

I work out 4 to 6 times a week, sit on my recliner
chair watching Netflix in my underwear, and
constantly remind my dog to stop chasing the cats.

The new year is finally here and we’re making these last few off-days
count! This month’s tasty food theme is chicken and we’re getting ready
to prepare some mouth-watering starters followed by a tasty main and
an even-better dessert that’ll be the perfect treat for that special someone
in your life - or just a cool way to start the new year. So, wipe the kitchen
counter, get out the chopping board, and let’s get cooking!

CHICKEN SALAD Instructions
WITH A TWIST Start by frying the onion in a bit of olive oil.
Prep time: 5min Once golden brown, add the salt and honey
Cooking time: 10min and allow to caramelize.
Servings: 2
Remove from the pan and set aside for later
use.
Ingredients
• 3oz (90g) lettuce or baby spinach Then make use of the same pan for the chicken
For caramelized onion breast and fry on both sides till the meat is
• 1 tbsp olive oil white before starting with the seasoning - this
• 1 red salad onion will ensure the chicken remains tender.
• 1 tsp honey First, drizzle the chicken with honey, then dust
• 1 tsp balsamic (optional) with onion powder, sprinkle with thyme and
• 1/4 tsp salt lastly ad some salt.
• 8-10 rosa tomatoes
• 1 Pomegranate or 3oz (90g) pips Turn the fillets around and repeat the steps for
• 1 handful of almonds the seasoning.
• 1 handful macadamias Finish off with ground black pepper (optional).
• 1 orange cut into wedges
• 8-10 raspberries Once cooked, add the onion back into the pan
• 4-5 fresh rosemary leaves removed from the stem to absorb the remaining juices.
• 1 baby avo or 1/2 big avo
For pan-fried honey and thyme chicken fillets Make the salad with all the ingredients
• 2 chicken fillets tenderized provided, except for the avo - add that last to
• 1 tbsp raw honey your plate after you have served your portion.
• 1/4 tsp onion powder Add the chicken to the salad the way you prefer
• 1/4 tsp dried thyme - whole, sliced, diced or even pulled.
• 1 pinch of salt and ground black pepper to taste
For pan-fried honey and thyme chicken fillets Sprinkle the onion over the top.
• 2 tbsp olive oil Mix the salad dressing and pour it over at the
• 2 tbsp raw honey table.
• 1 lime juiced
• 1/2 tsp salt Serve and enjoy!

ROAST PEPPER AND

QUINOA SALAD
Prep time: 10min
Cooking time: 30min
Servings: 1 large salad

Ingredients
Caramelized onions
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 2 large onions diced
• 1 tbsp honey
• 1 tsp salt
Quinoa
• 2 cups of quinoa
• 4 cups of water
• 1 pinch of salt
• 1 tsp dried parsley
Sesame-crusted roast pepper
• 3-4 bell peppers – red, yellow and green
peppers cut into wedges
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
• 1 tbsp raw honey
• 2 tsp sesame seeds
Garnish with almond flour and fresh rosemary

Instructions
Preheat oven to 390F (200C).
Prepare a baking tray with nonstick spray.
Cut peppers into wedges.
Place on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil and
raw honey and season with salt and pepper and
sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Roast in the oven set to 390F (200C) for 30
minutes.
In the meantime, dice the onion and fry in olive
oil.
Once cooked, drizzle with honey and season
with salt and allow the honey to caramelize
over medium heat.
Set aside once done.
Cook the quinoa as per instruction on the
packet.
Once the peppers are done, transfer quinoa into
a salad bowl, top with pepper and caramelized
onion, sprinkle with almond flour and garnish
with fresh rosemary before serving.

BEAN SALAD WITH A
CARAMEL CHILI-LIME
DRESSING
Prep time: 10min
Cooking time: 15min
Servings: 4

Ingredients
• 3oz (90g) baby spinach
• 3oz (90g) young asparagus - grilled for 15
minutes at 390F (200C) with olive oil, salt, and
ground black pepper
• 1 red chopped pimento pepper or red pepper
diced
• 1 red salad onion
• 2oz (60g) almond flakes or sprinkles
• 1 heaped tsp fresh garlic
• 2 cans butter beans washed and drained
• 2 limes juiced
• 1 tsp caramel essence
• 1/4 tsp chili flakes
• 1 tsp dried parsley
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
• 3 tbsp raw honey
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 1oz (15g) freshly chopped chives

Instructions
Preheat oven to 390F (200C).
Prepare a baking sheet with nonstick spray.
Place asparagus on the sheet, drizzle with olive oil
and season with salt and ground black pepper.
Place in the oven for about 15 minutes or till
cooked to preference.
Heat a pan over medium heat.
Add a drizzle of olive oil and fry the onion,
pimento pepper, almond flakes, and garlic till the
pepper and onion are cooked and the almonds
are toasted.
Allow to cool off slightly before adding the beans.
Be careful not to stir too much as this will ruin the
appearance of the beans.
Add the oven-grilled asparagus
Mix all the sauce ingredients together and pour
over the bean mix.
Refrigerate for at least an hour to allow the beans
to cool off properly.
Serve with baby spinach as a base and enjoy as a
meal or as a side

FLOUR CHICKEN
SCHNITZEL
Prep time: 10min
Cooking time: 20-25min
Servings: 4

Ingredients
• 1 cup almond flour
• 2 heaped tbsp sesame seeds
• 1 heaped tsp fresh garlic
• 1/2 tsp fine salt
• 2 heaped tsp onion flakes
• 1 heaped tsp dried parsley
• 3 tbs honey
• 4 large chicken fillets tenderized
• 4 eggs beaten
• 4 tsp olive oil
• 1 pinch paprika for garnish
Freshly chopped Italian parsley for garnish

Instructions
Preheat oven to 390F (200C).
Prepare a baking tray with foil and nonstick
spray.
Tenderize the chicken breasts.
Seal the breast with honey on each side.
For the crumbs: mix the almond flour,
sesame seeds, fresh garlic, salt, onion flakes,
and dried parsley.
Whisk the eggs.
Start by rolling the chicken breast in the
crumbs so it sticks to the honey, dip it in the
egg then roll in the crumbs again and then
place onto the baking tray, repeat with all
the breasts.
Bake for 20 minutes.
Remove from the oven, drizzle with olive
oil and sprinkle with paprika and place back
into the oven for another 5 minutes.
Serve warm with a side of your choice and
enjoy!

MINT BROWNIE BISCUITS
Prep time: 20min
Cooking time: 10-15min
Servings: 16-20 biscuits

Ingredients
• 10oz (300g) chopped dates
• 8oz (240g) raisins
• 5oz (150g) almond flour
• 2oz (60g) ground flax seeds
• 3 tsp caramel essence
• 4 tbsp cacao
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1 pinch of salt
• 1 tsp peppermint (or orange essence as an alternative)
• Almond flour to sprinkle biscuits with
• Raw honey to drizzle over biscuits once they’ve been
removed from the oven after baking
• Edible glitter to decorate with once cooled off

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375F (190C).
Prepare a baking tray with baking paper.
Soak the chopped dates and raisins in hot water for 10 to
15 minutes.
Drain and mash.
Then add the almond flour, caramel essence, cacao,
cinnamon, salt, and essence.
Mix well.
Tip: To avoid the mix from sticking to your hands, spray
your hands with nonstick spray, once it starts building
up, wash your hands and spray with nonstick spray again.
Start rolling small balls by taking a heaped tablespoon of
the mix and rolling it into a ball.
Place it on the baking tray and push down with a fork.
Repeat till the whole batch is done.
Dust with cinnamon and bake for 10 minutes at 375F
(190C).
Remove from the oven, drizzle with honey and sprinkle
with almond flour and let cool.
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for maximum
shelf life

beards have become a real fashion statement -
so much so that some women feel a man with a
mane is their preferred dating requirement. As
cool as it looks, growing a proper, thick, well-
groomed centerpiece isn’t easy as it seems but
luckily we’ve put together all the information
you’d need to get that lumberjack look - and
sooner than you think. The only real challenge
to growing those well-deserved facial follicles
will be time and we can’t help with that. For

 GET THE LOOK
The first step on your long road to beard-growing success is selecting the right beard for you. What do
we mean by ‘right’ beard? Well, much like you’d pick a hairstyle, you’ll need to opt for the right beard to
suit you! For this, you’d first need to consider your current look and more importantly, the shape of your
face. We’ve gone through the trouble of sourcing some of the most common facial shapes and the style of
beards that’d be most appropriate for each. So, take a look and see what beard would suit you best.

OBLONG
Your face shape is longer than wide. The
oblong-shaped face usually doesn’t full cheeks with a
forehead and jawbone that is usually the same width.
Your choice of beard styles include:
Because of the length of your face, you want to add
some side volume that will make your face appear fuller.
Depending on what your facial follicles allow, grow your
beard higher on your cheeks, a mustache style will also
break your face vertically. A pointy, long-styled beard is
not going to suit you very well so opt more for the Van
Dyke and -type beards.
OVAL
You are genetically blessed and can pretty much get
away with any style. You have both square and round
features that are well balanced allowing you a wide
selection of beard styles to choose from.
Your choice of beard styles include:
Well, virtually, anything. Really. The oval face is the
alpha in terms of shape and flexibility so the choice is
yours. The only thing you’ll really have to focus on is
keeping your beard well-groomed and tidy - you lucky
duck.
ROUND
Round shape faces are defines by a wide jawline and
cheekbones with a short chin.
Your choice of beard styles include:
You would benefit most from a triangular-shaped
style of beard that compliments your face by focusing
the volume of the hair on your chin with some short
stubble on the cheeks. Too much emphasis on the
sides would actually take attention away from the
center making your face appear fuller, and rounder,
and we don’t want that. Opt for the Stiletto Beard or
the Van Dyke.
SQUARE
You’re chiseled, well, where it matters in this case. You sport
a strong square jaw that gives you quite a lot to work with.
Your choice of beard styles include:
With a strong and appealing jawline, you don’t really want
to overdo (or hide) it. The chin area should be rounded or
triangular instead of a sharp line and angles. Opt for the Chin
Strap, a Soul Strap Beard, or even a sculpted goatee which is
also a good option.
DIAMOND
The diamond face shape is widest at the cheekbones with a
narrow forehead and a jawline that are both approximately
symmetrical in width.
Your choice of beard styles include:
The hair on the chin should counterbalance your
cheekbones. The focus should be on your chin but be careful
not to trim your bear too pointy but wider on the cheeks and
the edge of your jawbone. Keep your mustache lighter. You’re
not lost for choice and are able to play around with a few looks.
Opt for a fuller beard option like the Bilbo. The Chin Strap
beard will also work well, you can also try a well-trimmed
goatee.
HEART
A heart-shaped face features a forehead that is larger than
the cheekbones and jawline, along with a pointed chin.
Your choice of beard styles include:
This is the most difficult face shape to work with when it
comes to beard grooming with the chin being the narrowest
part of the face. A full beard can actually make your face look
even smaller. But fear not, designer stubble on the sides will
work perfectly for you without overpowering your natural
bone structure. Leave more length on the chin and consider
growing a mustache to add depth and volume to your jawline.
Opt for the Mutton Chop and Chin Curtain. A longer goatee
will also work well and of course, designer stubble.

TRIANGLE
This shape features a prominent chin, and your jawline measures greater than your cheekbones.
Your choice of beard styles include:
You’ll really want to take the focus away from your chin. Avoid too much fullness on the cheeks as
this will only make your jawline appear even wider. Hair should be kept short on the chin. Opt for
closely cropped styles like the Beardstache which is a great option for you.

MANSCAPING
Now that you might have an idea of what style of beard you’re into, all we have to do is
get you ready to take care of business. For that, you’ll need a set of grooming scissors, a hair
comb or brush and maybe even an electric trimmer - depending on your desired style of
mane. Once you’ve got the gear, you’re going to need some upkeep. Washing your beard
will be the easy part, simply use your regular shampoo. As for oils and conditioners, well
we’re going to tell you everything you need to know to keep your beard looking 100%
awesome, ALWAYS!

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN BEARD CONDITIONERS

Many principles of typical hair conditioning still apply here, so for instance, if you really wanted to, you could
use your regular conditioner because after all, hair is hair right? The idea of buying a conditioner specifically
for your beard means giving your beard the proper attention it needs. Just remember, conditioners and oils
are not the same thing, but we’ll get into oils later, for now, here are a few things to keep in mind when buying
a beard conditioner.

The thickness of your beard
Simply put, the thicker the hair, the stronger
the conditioner you’ll need. Conditioners are
not just there to help maintain and improve the
quality of your hair, they serve a dual purpose
of also softening and adding texture. Avoid
two-in-one shampoo ‘with’ conditioner
products and rather go for the leave-in
conditioner that rinses off.
Your desired scent
Most, if not all grooming products have
some kind of infused scent. You can opt to
choose a conditioner that will leave you with a

citrus, woody or musk. Also, there are loads of
unscented conditioners as well. The best time
to focus on the fragrance of your conditioner is
if you plan to use a non-scented oil (or no oil at
all) - or you could do one better and choose an
oil that further adds to the aroma of your
conditioner. Here, it’s all about your personal
preference more than anything else.
Your skin type
It’s very important to consider the current
condition of your skin and if you’re prone to
irritation - particularly from grooming
products. If you have sensitive skin then go for
something a lot softer, maybe even a general
all-purpose conditioner. The best type of
conditioner to choose is organic, or at least one
with as few chemicals as possible. If you’re
prone to itching, or dry skin then find a
conditioner that has an added moisturizer and
consider trying different conditioners until you
find the one that is right for your type of skin.
Your age
As you get older things start to change -
obviously. So while when you’re in your 20a it’s
easy to add a handful of soap, wash, rinse and
be on your way, but as you get older you’ll need
to carefully take care of your beard to keep it in
tip-top shape. The best type of conditioner to
choose for the long-haul is one that’s (as)
organic (as possible), is a leave-in, will
moisturize your skin and add sheen and volume
to your beard.

The last step in any beard grooming routine is the application of beard oil. Aside from providing moisture and beating back
dryness, beard oils are beneficial to your beard in many ways. Oils will help make your beard more manageable as well as
nourish and repair dry and brittle hair. Beard oils are also great for your facial skin underneath your beard so it’s vital that
you keep up with your daily routine to ensure you get the maximum benefits! Here are some things to consider when
purchasing beard oil.
The ingredients
This will likely be the most time-consuming part of
the process. You’ll need to research a few oils and
compare them making sure you strike a balance
between price and the best possible ingredients on
offer. We recommend natural ingredients over
chemicals any day! Once you have an idea of what’s on
the market you can then consider other important
factors like the type of oil, your skin and hair type, the
price, ease of application and size of the product. Don’t
worry though, we’ll cover the basics of what you’ll need
to know to get the oil best suited to you so keep
reading.
Type of oil
Beard oils are basically one of two types; carrier oils
or essential oils. Carrier oils are oils that you can apply
directly to the skin and are best suited for massages or
pain relief. These oils are primarily made from the fatty
portion of a nut, kernel, or another type of plant.
Carrier oils make up the bulk of beard oil recipes and
include oils such as jojoba, argan, sweet almond, and
coconut. Essential oils are more concentrated than
carrier oils and in most instances, essential oils are
diluted down with, yup, you guessed it, carrier oils.
This is because essential oils in their raw form are
typically too strong to apply directly to the skin. Some
common essential oils include lavender, peppermint,
eucalyptus, and tea tree.
Your skin and hair type
Since beard oils are applied directly to your face it’s
important to consider your skin and hair and how
they’d be impacted. Certain oils work better for certain
types of beards and skin while some oils work well
only on one or the other. Again, it’s all dependent on
you just be sure to avoid any chemicals or allergens at
all times while you investigate which oil is best for you!
Generally, you should already have an idea of what
your hair and skin is like. Is it dry, or oily, or maybe a
little bit of both? This matters when choosing an oil.
The same oil that works best for dry skin and a dry
beard probably won’t work for an oily, greasy beard. A
key ingredient to look out for is argan oil which is

excellent for a dry beard and skin because it helps add
moisture. If you have sensitive skin, including skin
that’s prone to acne, look for a beard oil that contains
jojoba or grapeseed oil or both. Beard oils with
all-natural ingredients should provide you with
everything you’ll need to maintain a healthy, thicker
beard, while oils that contain additives such as alcohol
are often detrimental to your skin and beard so try to
avoid those as best you can.
Is it easy to apply?
Beard oils that are easy to apply are the ones that you’ll
tend to use more consistently - and consistency is good
because a great beard takes a lot of time and effort to
achieve. You should try and find a beard oil that has a rich
texture but isn’t too heavy, making it easier to apply and
distribute evenly over your beard. An important feature
to look for is the packaging of the oil itself. Instead of a
twist-cap, it’s better to go for an oil with a dropper since
you’ll be able to apply the exact amount you need help you
avoid wastage and excessively oily hands.
What’s the price?
Price is always a factor and any man who is into
grooming knows exactly how expensive it can be. The
idea here is not to compromise on the quality of the
product but to find value for money. Just because
something is expensive, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s
effective, or even right for your skin and hair type. Focus
on finding a quality oil that won’t break the bank. If you
did your research on the ingredients then it won’t be too
hard to compare prices. Meaning you’ll know exactly
what you’re getting and for how much.
Size matters
Yeah, we know how that sounds, but it’s actually a
thing. Beard oils shouldn’t come in tubs or huge
24-ounce squeeze-bottles. You’ll need a product that
fits nicely on the shelf of your medicine cabinet and
ideally something you can pack in a travel bag in case
you need to go out of state. If you travel a lot then also
be sure that your oil closes tightly. If you’re buying a
product for the first time then consider getting a
smaller size to try the product first.

I have been to a great many places but on one of
my trips to India my friends took me to a temple
out in a secluded area. It was like a nightclub and a
religious experience all in one. By the time we left
I had turmeric on my face, flowers in my hair and
forgot my shoes but it was incredible.

Cannes, France is hands down my favorite. The
film festival in Cannes is the best thing on this
earth in my book. It’s where all my favorite things
like work, fashion and yachts all converge in one
magical place. If you ever find yourself in Cannes
the Hotel Du Cap and The Majestic Bar are an
absolute must.
ANY CRAZY STORIES ABOUT DRUNKEN
ESCAPADES OR RANDOM CULTURE SHOCK?
Last time I was in Jamaica we went to this
otherworldly hotel called Strawberry Hill.
Strawberry Hill is known for two things, a
spectacular view and their fantastic Blackwell
Rum Punches. Which makes the long drive up
the mountain to get there all worthwhile. After a
few too many drinks we made our way back down
the mountain. It was dark and the road was just
crawling with what I thought were feral goats. I
made my friend pull over several times because I
was hellbent on petting one. Finally after my fifth
goat petting attempt I finally got one to let me pet
it. Out of nowhere in the dark a very angry man
comes out of the jungle to chew me out. Even
sober I can’t understand Jamaican Patois. Let
alone toasted in the dark; while petting a goat. I
ran back to the car and my friends were laughing
at me because apparently the man was convinced
that I was stealing his goat. After speeding away,
we got pulled over and had to explain to the police
(by explain I mean bribe) that I had upset a guy by
petting his goat and we were not at all drunk.

On several occasions I have eaten things and I
didn’t even know what it was. The strangest thing
I have had was squid ink bread at a restaurant in
Tokyo. It’s dark purple and tastes a bit saltier than
regular bread. Apparently, squid ink is good for
digestion or so I’ve been told.

in it. Directing was not at all something I set out to
do with my life but I’ll gladly take any excuse to use
a bullhorn.

I love meeting and working with people from
every walk of life in our big beautiful world. It’s
given me a skill set that cannot be cultivated in any
other way. I think some of my best thoughts while
I’m out having an adventure in some faraway place.

How learning to communicate effectively

could save your relationship

There are three things that I truly believe we should get taught in school:
how to do our own taxes, what really happens during sex, and how to
effectively and constructively communicate. This last skill would be
incredibly useful in not only romantic relationships but in work and family
relationships and friendships as well. Unfortunately, we don’t leave high
school and enter our adulthood with effective techniques and skills that
assist us in knowing how to have constructive conversations, and I spend
much of my time working with couples and helping them to learn these
skills and techniques. Let’s break down the basics of good communication,
as well as looking at some specific techniques you can use.
1. Ensure you’re always engaging in Always use ‘I’ language

again and again, in the same way, is

has had in the past.

5. Be curious… always!
It doesn’t help anyone to accuse
their partner of doing something
without trying to understand their
partner’s point of view. A really great
statement to use when sharing with
your partner what’s on your mind
is this: “The story that I’m telling
myself is that…” and then asking your
partner if you’ve got it wrong? Owning
the way you have conceptualized
a situation is important – very few
partners take ownership of their
disagreements. By being curious
and always asking your partner what
was happening for them rather than
accusing them, or asking them what
they need or could be done differently
between you can be the difference
between constructive or destructive
communication.
