ABORTION

Shekenah:

Good morning teachers and students. Thank you for taking the time to come to this debate. Today,
the topic is about abortion.

And this house believes that abortion should be legalized here in the Philippines

In this argument I as the prime minister limits the talks or thoughts in this topic abortion. The
argument should not include Religion and any other Biblical verses. We should just talk about why it is
right to legalize the abortion and why it isn't.

As first speaker, I will be defining key terms and outlining our main argument. Our second speaker will
explain the supporting reasons for our argument, our third speaker will summarize our argument and
the last speaker would give you some facts and information that is has not been mentioned by the
other speakers and also would say his thoughts about the argument .

Abortion is a medical termination of pregnancy before the fetus has developed enough to survive
outside the uterus. And most of us know that many people here in our country doesn't like the idea of
legalizing it. But did you know that legalizing abortion is more beneficial than not legalizing it?

Criminalising abortion does not stop doing it, it just makes abortion less safe. For example, there's
woman who has an unwanted child in her womb, she was maybe a rape victim or maybe she isn't
financially stable or wasn't ready to have a child for she was young, and because abortion is illegal
here, that may lead the woman to take an unsafe abortion like using coat hangers, knitting needles,
or radiator flush, or by going to unsafe "back-alley" abortionists. So it means professionally performed
abortions reduces maternal injury and death caused by illegal abortions.

It is said that seventy percent of unwanted pregnancies here in the Philippines end in abortion,
according to the WHO. Approximately 4 in 5 abortions in the Philippines are for economic reasons,
often where a woman already has several children and cannot care for another. And for your
information abortion here is still not legal so it means that they doing illegal abortion and it can cause
many death cases for.

Also, access to safe abortions is a matter of human rights. Under international human right law,
everyone has a right to be free in discrimination, violence, torture and degrading treatment. Forcing
someone to carry an unwanted child and forcing them to do an unsafe abortion is a violation of their
rights. For people with certain health conditions, an unintended pregnancy can be devastating.
Imagine the woman who gets a cancer diagnosis and must decide between continuing the pregnancy
or life-saving chemotherapy. Isn't it better to give them a quick, painless peace rather than them
knowing the truth that they don't have much time to live until they become old? That the chance of
dying, right here, right now, is entirely possible? Whatever the reasons why a woman would decide to
have abortion, it seems only justified that she should be able to make decisions in regards to her life
and body.

The decision that she will makes will be beneficial to both the woman and the fetus. Reproductive
choice empowers women by giving them control over their own bodies. The choice over when and
whether to have children is central to a woman's independence and ability to determine her future.
Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor wrote in the 1992 decision in Planned
Parenthood v. Casey, "The ability of women to participate equally in the economic and social life of
the Nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives." It's their body, it's
their choice. Pro-abortion never supposed to mean pro-killings, it supposed to mean that you support
the options. Its that you support having a choice. And that's what our country needs.
Angelica:
People say abortion is risky, dangerous. Yes, it's risky because it's not legal. Women living in places
where abortion is illegal would travel to other states where it is legal to obtain the procedure. Women
lacking resources would either be forced by the government and politicians to go through with an
unwanted or risky pregnancy, attempt to self-abort or turn to an illegal-and potentially dangerous-
provider for help. Women's health, privacy, and equity would suffer, to the point of dying.
R.A. 101734, Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10354),
informally known as the Reproductive Health Law or RH Law, is a law in the Philippines, which
guarantees universal access to methods on contraception, fertility control, sexual education, and
maternal care. It also includes access to safe, legal and modern medicine. Thanks to today's
technology and medicine, there are safer ways to do abortion; (?) abortion like taking pills(Medication
abortion), or (Aspiration abortion)appointing to a physician to operate.

Is it safe?
Medication abortion carries at least 10 times less risk of health complications than continuing a
pregnancy.

Aspiration abortion is a safe and common procedure that has been done for more than 40 years.
Abortion in the first eight weeks is the safest, and problems with any first trimester abortions are
rare. Surgical abortion carries at least 10 times less risk of health complications than continuing a
pregnancy.

You say that the fetus is still a life, even though it's not yet born into the world; that they have the
human right to live, yes? And you'll tell the mother who wants to abort that her decision and belief is
wrong because it's her baby, yes?

So does it mean, even if the fetus is not viable, we should keep the fetus because it's still life? Even if
it means a mother's life in return? As long as the baby is "alive", then it's okay for the mother to die?
After all, it has the right to live.

Individual rights should be paramount. I believe that the government's role in creating and enforcing
reproductive health legislation is to protect an individual's ability to access all options. As with all
freedoms, there are limits. But a government should respect private decisions and interfere as little as
possible. It helps ensure that everyone has the opportunity to make these decisions responsibly.

You should stop discriminating, criticizing and stereo-typing their choices and women themselves.
We'll never know why a man rapes women as to why a woman decides to abort a child. We can only
blame it on human nature. After all, in this world, it's kill or be killed. We didn't ask life to bring chaos
down to earth, but it happens anyway. Abortion is not murder, it's more of like a chance to a quick,
painless death and onto peace.

Don't pressure them or force your beliefs on them. As a mother, can you just stand by and watch your child's
life as they are heavily discriminated against, stereotyped and criticized by society because they are the fruit
of rape? What's better; painless death but achieving peace? Or living through all your life knowing that your
child and even yourself are badmouthed from society; "damned to death"?

You want revenge? Don't give the rapist the joy that the child is living in utter vain, be at peace.

Just because the legalization of abortion is approved, doesn't mean that it encourages women to abort. You
should stop that. It simply means that we are giving women the right to choose; Gender Equity, people.
Juliana:
good morning everyone. I am the affirmative whip and this house believes that we should legalize abortion in
the Philippines.

By now we should have persuaded you in your thoughts and ideas in legalizing abortion. Abortion again is a
medical termination of pregnancy before the fetus has developed enough to survive outside the uterus.
Before I summarized all the information given by our speakers, I will be rebutting the informations given by
the opposing side.

Abortion can lessen poverty, discrimination, and death due to unsafe abortions.

Canada’s international development minister has defended the Justin Trudeau Liberal government’s
aggressive pro-abortion international aid policy by claiming abortion is “a tool to end poverty.”

Next, It can lessen discrimination because we are giving women their rights to their body. People have been
discriminating against women who are going through abortion. But we don't know what is their reason.

Politicians fail to acknowledge is that women have been having abortions for years and will continue to have
them whether they’re legal or not. The difference is that by keeping them legal, regulated and performed by
doctors, we can save more lives than the abortions end and keep thousands of women from shoddily
performed abortion that result in their sickness or death.

It is beneficial to legalized abortion not just here in the Philippines but also other countries. It can help in our
country because it can slow down the population, it can lessen poverty, it is a tool to stop discrimination and
lessen death due to unsafe abortions.

The child is alive and that wonderful. But what is the quality of his or her lifelike? Is it best for a child to be
born when their quality of life is subpar? You want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated and
not a child housed. Why do we let the baby come to this world when we are not ready to give them love and
care but abandoned them to their fate?

Abortion is morally wrong but should not be criminalized. Pro-abortion never supposed to mean pro-killings, it
supposed to mean that you support the options. Its that you support having a choice. And that's what our
country needs. Think and think until you get why abortion should be legalized. Thank you and good morning
everyone.
Steven:

Our side provides you not merely a positive impact to our country's growth but also extending the
rights of every women,Women are given the rights to decide for their future and path to
follow.abortion is an intensely personal decision between a women, her clergy, her family and her
doctor.Abortion will lessen the number of women's death because sometimes they attempt self
abort and go for illegal and potentially provider.By legaling the abortion to our country with great
invention,we can control the fertility rate with less risk.It is by choosing aspiration or medication way
of abortion that a lot safer(10× less risk).just like what they ask,Do you want inevitable diseases pass
down with your child genetic? If women has health risk the child must suffering through the pain.it is
better to provide them a painless peace than suffering from those that can be a lifetime that involves
financial matter. Some women are forced to have risky pregnancy by the government, we also
recognize that health care and education help reduce the no.of unintended pregnancies and thereby
also reduce the need of abortion.Individual have full, messy, imperfect lives. The one who obtain
abortion are able to maintain positive outlook of their future. It is not a question of morality,it is a
question of standing by a person inherent right to choose their right to life and safety. It cannot be
rejected simply because it is morally wrong, instead it must be viewed as an option that mitigates
circumstantial risk, preserves lives and provides a humane way to end guaranteed suffering.
REBUTTALS
1. Abortion is taking human life
The concept of personhood is different from the concept of human life. The system of fetus is not yet
developed until the third trimester of pregnancy. Women usally take abortion in first trimester, second
trimester or past 24 weeks. A fetus is not a child. Personhood begins when fetus is viable. Fetus is considered
viable when it is able to live outside the woman’s uterus on its own.

2. Adoption
-Nobody wants to make a baby for someone else. Adoption is not an alternative to abortion. Yes the baby is
alive, but you cannot ensure that the baby is healthy, living peacefully and happy with his or her life. Also the
child can suffer depression or anxiety because he or she will know that he or she is adopted. He or she will
think of many complicated things that can lead him or her to suffer from depression. You cannot also predict
what will happen between the baby and his or her new family. You cannot say that he or she will have a
peaceful life.

3. Medical Complication to the Mother

-A person is responsible for his or her decisions. If abortion is not legalized, many women will go to illegal
abortions that can lead them to more medical complications or also death. If abortion is legalized, doctors will
be the one to do the procedure and they can assure you that you are safe and healthy. Abortion is a safe
medical procedure. Medical abortions have less than 0.5% risk of serious complications and do not affects a
woman’s health.

4. contraception
-some people may wonder "Is abortion another form of contraception?", it's not. Abortion stops a pregnancy
that has already started, while contraception prevents a pregnancy from happening in the first place.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, an organization that studies and advances reproductive health, one in
three American women will have an abortion. Of those, more than half of them were using some form of
contraception when they conceived. Almost half were using condoms and two-thirds were on the pill. Most
women do not rely on abortion as a means of controlling the size of their family. Usually, abortion is chosen by
women who already made the choice not to have a child at that time but for whom their birth control method
failed.
