1. Present Tense
a. Simple Present Tense

Simple present tense is used to describe facts, habits, and events that
occur at this time. Simimple present tense can give instructions or
directions and express fixed arrangements, present or future.

Simple Present Tense Formula :

1) Positive Sentences

S + Verb 1 (s/es)+ object S + to be (am/is/are) + object

Examples : They watch new movies every Sunday


She reads Harry Potter book everyday
Susi Pudjiastuti is the Ministry of Maritime Affairs
2) Negative Sentences

S+Do/Does+Not+Verb 1 +Object S + be (am/is/are)+Not+Object

Examples : They don’t watch new movies every sunday.


She doesn’t read Harry Potter book everyday.
Susi Pudjiastuti is not the Ministry of Maritime Affairs
3) Interrogative Sentences

Do / Does + S + Verb 1 + O +? to be (am/is/are) + S + O + ?

Examples : Do they watch new movie everyday ?


Does she read Harry potter book everyday ?
Is Susi Pudjiastuti the Ministry of Maritime Affairs ?

b. Present Continuous Tense


The present continuous tense is used to express something happening
right now or to express something that is not happening right now.
Present continuous tense can also be used to show that something will or
will not happen in the near future or to describe an action or event in the
future which has already been planned or prepared, and present
continuous tense can describe an action that is going on during this period
of time or a trend.
Present Continuous Formula :
1) Positive Sentences

S + to be (am/is/are) + Verb-ing + Object

Example : She is doing her homework now

2) Negative Sentences

S + to be (am/is/are) + not+ Verb-ing + Object

Example : She is not doing her homework now.

3) Interrogative Sentences

to be (am/is/are) + S + Verb-ing + Object + ?

Example : Is she doing her homework now?

c. Present Perfect Tense


The present perfect tense is used to describe an action or situation that
started in the past and continues in the presen, an action performed during
a period that has not yet finished, a repeated action in an unspecified
period between the past and now and the present perfect tense can descrie
something that happened in the past but is important at the time of
speaking.

Present perfect tense formula :


1) Positive Sentences

S + has/have + Verb 3 + Object S + has/have + been + Object

Example : They have lived in Jakarta for a long time


He has learned English for one year
We have been back from office
2) Negative Sentences

S + has/have + not + Verb 3 S + has/have+not+ been + Object

Example : They have not lived in Jakarta for a long time


He has not learned English for one year
We have not been back from office

3) Interrogative Sentences

Has/have + S + Verb 3 + ? Has/have + S + been + Object + ?

Example : Have they lived in Jakarta for a long time ?


Has he learned English for one year ?
Have we been back from office ?

d. Present Perfect Continuous Tense


The present perfect continuous tense is use to describe an action that
started in the past and continue in the present. In addition, present perfect
tense can describe an action that have just finished but we are interested in
the results
Present perfect continuous formula :
1) Positive Sentences

S + has/have + been + Verb-ing + Object

Example :We have been painting this wall since 2 hours ago

2) Negative Sentences

S + has/have + not + been + Verb-ing + Object

Example : We have not been painting this wall since 2 hours ago

3) Interrogative Sentences

Has/have + S + been + Verb-ing + Object + ?

Example : Have we been painting this wall since 2 hours ago ?


2. Past Tense
a. Simple Past Tense
The simple past tense is used to talk about a completed action in a
time before now. The simple past is the basic form of past tense in
English. The time of the action can be in the recent past or the distant past
and action duration is not important.

Simple past tense formula :

1) Positive Sentences

S + verb 2 + Object S + to be (was/were) + Object

Example : He went the cinema last night

2) Negative Sentences

S + did + not + Verb 1 + O S + to be (was/were) + not +Verb 1 + O

Example : He didn’t go to the cinema last night

3) Interrogative Sentences

Did + S + Verb 1 + O + ?

Example : Did he go to the cinema last night ?

b. Past Continuous Tense


The past continuous tense, also known as the past progressive tense, refers
to a continuing action or state that was happening at some point in the
past. The past continuous tense is formed by combining the past tense of to
be (i.e., was/were) with the verb’s present participle (-ing word).

Past continuous tense formula :

1) Positive Sentences

S + to be (was/were) + verb 1-ing + O

Example : She was reading a book


We were playing

2) Negative Sentences

S + to be (was/were) + not + verb 1-ing + O


Example : She was not reading a book
We weren’t playing
3) Irrogative Sentences

Was/Were + S + verb 1-ing + ?

Example : Was she reading a book ?


Were we playing ?

c. Past Perfect Tense


Past perfect tense is used to express two types of actions which occurred
or completed in the past. It is usually used to express an action which
occurred a long time ago in past. It gives a sense of completion of an
activity in past.

Past perfect tense formula :


1) Possitive Sentences

S + had + verb 3 + O

Example : She had cooked some food


They had bought a new car
2) Negative Sentences

S + had + not + past participle + O

Example : She had not cooked some food


They had not bought a new car

3) Irrogative Sentences

Had + Subject + Past Participle + Object + ?

Example : Had she cooked some food ?


Had they bought a new car ?

d. Past Perfect Continuous


The past perfect continuous (also called past perfect progressive) is averb
tense which is used to show that an action started in the past and continued
up to another point in the past.
Past perfect continuous formula :

1) Possitive Sentences

S+ had been + verb-ing + Object + Time Reference

Example : She had been watching the movie for two hours
She had been studying in that university since 2009

2) Negative Sentences

S+ had not been + verb-ing + Object + Time Reference

Example : She had not been watching the movie for two hours
She had not been studying in that university since 2009

3) Irrogative Sentences

Had +Subject + Been + verb-ing + Object + Time Reference + ?

Example : Had she been watching the movie for two hours ?
Had she been studying in that university since 2009 ?

3. Future Tense
a. Simple Future Tense
The simple Future simple tense is used to express an action that will occur
or happen in the future. It is used to describe an action which will happen
in near or far future after being said about it by the speaker.

Simple future tense formula :


1) Positive Sentences

S + will + verb 1 + O S+to be(am/is/are)+going to+verb 1+ O

Example : We will go to school soon.


Dini is going to finish her homework tonight.
2) Negative Sentences

S+will+not+ verb 1+O S+to be(am/is/are)+not+going to+verb 1+ O


Example : We will not go to school soon.
Dini is not going to finish her homework tonight.

3) Interrogative Sentences

Will + S + verb 1 + O ? To be(am/is/are)+S+going to+verb 1+ O ?

Example : Will we go to scool soon ?


Is Dini going to finish her homework tonight ?

b. Future Continuous Tense


The future continuous talk about something that will be in progress at or
around a time in the future. The future continuous can be used for
predicting or guessing about future events.
Future Continuous Tense formula :
1) Positive Sentences

S + will +be + Verb-ing + Object

Example : I will be watching a movie tonight


2) Negative Sentences

S + will + not+ be + Verb-ing + Object

Example : I will not be watching a movie tonight

3) Interrogative Sentences

Will + S + be + Verb-ing + Object ?

Example : Will you be watching a movie tonight ?

c. Future Perfect Tense


The future perfect is a verb tense used for actions that will be completed
before some other point in the future. He future perfect tesnse describe an
event that has been completed (in the future) when another activity arises
or before a certain time.
Future perfect tense formula :
1) Positive Sentences

S + will have + Verb 3

Example : I will have read this book by the time you arrive
2) Negative Sentences

S + will not have + Verb 3

Example : I will not have read this book by the time you arrive

3) Interrogative Sentences

Will + S + Have + Verb 3 ?

Example : Will I have read this book by the time you arrive?

d. Future Perfect Continuous


The future perfect continuous describe an activity that has occurred (in the
future) and when other activities appear at a certain time, the first activity
is still ongoing.
Future perfect continuous formula :
1) Positive Sentences

S + will + have been + Verb-ing

Example : They will have been playing


2) Negative Sentences

S + will + not + have been + Verb-ing

Example : They will not have been playing

3) Interrogative Sentences

Will + S + Have been + Verb-ing ?


Example : Will they have been playing ?

e. Simple Past Future Tense


Simple Past Future Tense is a form of verb in English to talk about the
future from a past perspective. These tenses can be used to express an
event or action to be taken, make estimates or predictions, and make
promises in the future when in the past.
Simple past future tense formula :
1) Possitive Sentences

S + Should/Would + Verb 1 + O S + Should/Would + Be + O

Example : He Should be in Banten next month


I would be pick up when you arrive at the station
tomorrow
2) Negative Sentences
S+Should/Would+Not+Verb1+O S+Should/Would+Not+Be + O

Example : He should not be in Banten next month


I would not be pick up when you arrive at the station
tomorrow
3) Irrogative Sentences

Should/Would+S+Verb1+O+? Should/Would+S+Be+O+?

Example: Should he be in Banten next month ?


Would you be pick up when I arrive at the station
tomorrow ?

f. Past Future Continuous Tense


The future continuous refers to an unfinished action or event that will be
in progress at a time later than now. The future continuous is used for
quite a few different purposes.

Past Future Continuous formula :


1) Positive Sentences

S + would + be + Ving + O/C

Example : We would be taking math class at 8 yesterday


2) Negative Sentences

S + would + not + be + Ving + O/C

Example : We would be taking math class at 8 yesterday

3) Interrogative Sentences

Would + S + be + Ving + O/c + ?

Example : Would we be taking math class at 8 yesterday?

g. Past Future Perfect Tense

Past Future Perfect Tense is used to express a sentence that will have
occurred in the past. These tenses are a combination of past + future
perfect. These tenses combine several parts of time in one sentence.

Past Future Perfect Tense Formula :


1) Possitive Sentences

Subject + should/would + have + been + complement

Example : I should have seen John if I had come earlier


2) Negative Sentences

Subject + should/would + not + have + been + complement

Example : I should not have seen John if I had come late

3) Irrogative Sentences

Should/would + subject + have + been + complement + ?

Example :Would she have been married if she had not got an
accident ?

h. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense


Past future perfect continuous tense is a tense used to express sentences
that will have been happening in the past. These tenses are similar to the
perfect continuous tense future, the equation is that both have more than
one time statement in one sentence. Past future continuous tense is an
assumption or assumption, meaning that the actor in the sentence only
gives an assumption on the sentence stated by him.

Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense Formula :


1) Possitive Sentences

Subject + would + have been + Verb-ing

Example :I would have been working in leading companies for 5 years

2) Negative Sentences

Subject + would + not + have been + Verb-ing

Example : I would not have been working in leading companies for 5


years

3) Irrogative Sentences

Would + Subject + have been + Verb-ing

Example : Would you have been working in leading companies for 5


years ?
