Q.1: How many people travel by domestic airlines in India in a day?
Ans: 28 states, 7 union territories
Lets assume 40 airports in India
Of these six namely Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta, Hyderabad, Bangalore
and Chennai have around 500 flights daily (assume 75 % domestic, 25 % international)
Rest on an average have around 15 flights daily predominantly
domestic
Therefore total number of flights 15*34 + 6*0.75*500 = 510 + 2250
= 2760 (assume 2700)
Of these let us assume 25 % of flights are not non-stop (i.e. they
connect more than two cities)
Therefore actual number of independent flights = 2700*0.75 = 2025
(assume 2000)
Since domestic carriers mainly deploy Airbus 320 (seating capacity of
180) and ATR (seating capacity of 72)
Let us assume 70 % of these flights are served by Airbus (i.e. 180
seats each) and rest 30 % by ATR (72 seats each)
Therefore Number of seats on offer = 0.70*2000*180 +
0.30*2000*72 = 252000 + 43200 = 295200
Let us assume a load factor of 60 i.e. around 60 % of planes are filled.
So Total number of people traveling by domestic airlines everyday =
295200*0.60 = 177210 (approx 180,000) Q.2: How many Mc-Veggie burgers of McDonalds are sold everyday inIndia?
Ans:
McDonald entered the Indian market on 13th October 1996.Since then
according to IBEF report, it has been growing at 35-40 % per year, It has now around 200 outlets across India. Almost all these outlets are in the urban areas or semi urban areas so that the footfall in the areas is high.
For an outlet like Mc Donald’s which is highly successful in India, the
approach of counting the number of people wanting to get to Mc Donald’s is useless as in this case Supply is less than the Demand.
Hence we take the other approach, we can estimate the number of
counters dispersing the burgers in the outlets and then estimate the amount of time the executive spends with each customer, multiplying this with the amount of time the restaurant’s open in a day, we can get a rough estimate of the number of burger being dispensed
We divide the number of 200 outlets into 3 categories. One is
McDonalds in the posh urban areas, second in urban areas and third in semi urban areas.
We take the ratio to be 30: 50: 20
Hence the number of outlets in Posh Urban areas: 30 % of 200 = 60
Number of outlets in urban areas: 50 % of 200 = 100
In semi urban areas: 20% of 200= 40
In posh areas the people will prefer more heavy and costly food than a Mc Veggie burger and will tend to take the entire meal with a MC Wrap etc.
So taking a deflating factor of 0.8 in posh areas. This factor is 1 in
both other areas. Taking the number of counters in areas be 4/ outlet in posh areas, 6 /outlet in urban areas and 3/outlet in semi urban area.
Hence the total number of posh counters: 60*4*0.8 = 192
Total number of urban counters: 100*6 = 600
Total number of semi urban counters: 40*3 = 120
Hence total number of counters selling burger: 120+600+192= 912
Assuming that offer takes around 3 mins to deliver( including huge
meals , wraps, big orders for families and take aways – average of all) Also consider the number of people who buy something else instead of Mc veggie burger :50% and the total time counter is occupied (average taken between seasons and period of the day) : 12 hrs.
So total orders taken: 12*60/3 = 240 /counter
Total orders in India: 240* 912 = 218880
50 % for burger: 109440
Hence the total number of Mc Veggie burgers sold in india: Roughly
110000/day. Q3 How many times does MS Dhoni appear in TV commercials in a month? (Count every instance of appearance in an ad separately)
A3
While calculating the number we need to keep in mind that this
number varies widely with month /year or even with the fact that the cricketing season is on or not.
Assuming that the cricketing season is on 8 months/year, we divide
the year into 2 parts:
8 months: Cricketing season Taking inflator of 1.2
4 months: Non cricketing season Taking deflator of 0.8
Assuming that the average length of the AD is 20 seconds and in a
typical 1 hr show we have ads minimum of 15 mins. Hence the number of Ads /hr= 15*60/20= 45 Ads/hr/channel
Typical channels: 100 average
Hence the total commercials running per hr : 100*45/hr=4500 /hr
In a day : 4500*25 *0.8 = 86400/day ( taking deflator of 0.8 for night
hours)
In a month: 86400*30 *(8*1.2 + 4*0.8) ( average of non cricketing
and cricketing season) = 3317760/ month
Now taking the parameter of non sporting channels and sporting
channels Also considering the companies that like to have sporting heroes as their brand ambassador and by taking into account MS Dhoni’s popularity we assume that he is in 20% of these Ads.
Hence the Number of Ads: 0.2*3317760= 663552 /month
If we see the figure/channel : 6635/month/channel.
