SUBJECT: Release of Systems for Euro 6 emissions compliance

1. INTRODUCTION

In preparation for the introduction of the Euro 6 emissions legislation, Volvo are now fitting a new
Distributed Pump Heavy Duty Common Rail system, supplied by Delphi, to the Volvo D11K engine
fitted to Volvo FM and FMX trucks. This engine is also supplied to Renault and UDT for fitment to
their own ranges of Heavy Duty Trucks. In the future this will also be fitted to Mack vehicles.
This system is similar in principle to the
Electronic Unit Injector system fitted to
existing Euro 5 engines, but with the addition
of a high pressure rail, the necessary
intermediate high pressure pipes, and the
substitution of some of the full function EUI
type units with non-pumping injectors.
The system will also be fitted to the 13 and 16
litre engines for euro 6 applications however
the number of pumping / non-pumping units
may vary between engines.

The basic design of the pumping injectors is similar to the previous E3 type EUIs but since the
pumping element now supplies pressure to the rail rather than directly to its own injection stage, the
spill control valve changes function and becomes an outlet metering valve. This, along with the PCV
(pressure control valve) fitted to the rail, regulates the volume and pressure of the fuel supplied to
the rail.
With the addition of the HP rail, the pumping injectors are no longer required to provide high pressure
to coincide with the injection events for their respective injection elements. In fact, due to the design
and the use of a single feed/supply pipe to the pumping injectors, the bodies are specifically prevented
from supplying pressure timed to their own injection events, and the function of the pumping and
injection events can be considered separately.
The design of the non-pumping injectors is identical to the injection section of the pumping injectors
but fitted to a different body and stator.
