Wolverhampton City Council keeps its services running optimally with WakeUp
Wolverhampton City Council wanted a way to be sure that its systems were always securely patched. By opting for a combination of Microsoft SMS 2003 and WakeUp from 1E, the council can conduct all its patching in a standardized and timely fashion out of hours, with zero disruption to users.

Wolverhampton City Councils IT department provides services to the 260,000 people living in Wolverhampton, as well as 12,500 council staff, and other public organizations.

Wolverhampton City Council required a solution that would complement the systems management features of SMS by allowing successful patching out of hours:
Automatically turn on 3,500 PCs to allow software to be installed or updated Machines can be updated out of hours or when not in use Entire desktop estate can be patched quickly

The challenge
The council IT departments 90 staff manage 3,500 desktop PCs and a range of mobile devices. Like most councils, Wolverhampton must meet yearly e-government targets. To stand a chance of meeting these targets, the department needs to make sure the underlying electronic infrastructure is running properly and securely at all times and that means applying patches and updates as soon as possible to all computers on the network.

The solution
Wolverhampton chose Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) to help manage their systems. They also required additional functionality to automatically switch on PCs to allow software to be installed or updated out of hours or when the machine was not in use. WakeUp from 1E provided the functionality the Wolverhampton team needed to deliver critical patches within a day to all machines. Network manager Matt Jeavons estimates that without WakeUp it would not have been possible to ensure a higher coverage than 95 per cent of PCs being updated within five days. Even that would involve ringing people up and asking them to turn on their PCs, which would be time consuming and not really be practical. WakeUp addresses this limitation and allows the entire desktop estate to be patched within the time required, Matt explains. Indeed, had it not been for WakeUp, SMS would have been ruled out as an option altogether.

The benefits of the combined solution are clear. If it wishes, the team can distribute software patches and updates within less than a day of them being made available, though in practice the team prefers to test patches thoroughly first and then use WakeUp to speedily distribute them. As a result, the council can be confident its machines are kept fully up to date with verified patches, allowing employees to work at maximum efficiency. WakeUp has also enabled the department to take a much more structured approach to patch management significantly better for complying with the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) standards to which the council and many other organizations worldwide are committed. Matt Jeavons points out that its important to be able to show that standards are being met and improvements made year on year. One measurement of improvement has been defined in the Gershon report. This was produced by Sir Peter Gershon, and showed that greater savings could be made by Police, Councils and other local authorities, which would result in something like 6-8 billion, if a more efficient way of working was adopted. 1Es products add value to Microsoft solutions in the form of things that people really want.
