Inquiry-Based Science Teaching Approach

Topic/Title Cell Division: Mitosis and Meiosis

Grade Level Grade 8
Time Allotmen 2 Hours
1. Compare mitosis and meiosis, and their role in the cell
Prepared by: Mrs. Benedicta
division cycle; G. Capunong
Learning Competency:
meiosis, and their role in the
cell-division
2. Explain thecycle;
significance of meiosis in maintaining the

number. S8LT-IVe-17
Sub-tasks for Competency in Focus:
1. Compare the stages/phases of mitosis and meiosis
2. Manipulate the stages of mitosis and meiosis
3. Internalize the significance of mitosis and meiosis in the ce
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to comp
and meiosis and its stages, its significance, and their role in the c
cycle.

Lesson Outline Materials

Elicit ( Access prior knowledge)
. Recall previous lesson by "4 pics 1 word" ( sexual and asexual pictures) Laptop.
. A set of pictures will be shown and the learners will provide the right word projector,
that captures the essence of the set of pictures pictures
Engage ( Get the students' minds focused on the topic)
. The class will be divided into small groups, and pictures of a cell will be Pictures
given to each group. Instruct them to label the parts. Manila
. Guide Questions: paper,
1. What are the three basic parts of a cell? pen
2. What particular cell organelle is involved in cell division? scotch
3. How does the cell divide? tape
Explore ( Provide the students with a common experience)
Comparing mitosis and meiosis by "Venn Diagram" Manila
. Each group will be given factsheets and cut-out photos on the stages of mitosis paper,
and meiosis. factsheets,
Task: photos,
. The learners will manipulate the correct sequence on the different stages of scotch
mitosis and meiosis. Then, identify its location, similarities and differences. tape

Explain ( Teach the concept. Should include interaction between teacher and
learners)
. Four (4) groups will be asked to present their outputs to the class.
. Guide Questions:
1. How are mitosis and meiosis being compared?
2. What events are common to both mitosis and meiosis?
3. What specific characteristics present only in mitosis? How about in meiosi
4. Why are mitosis and meiosis cell division significant to the living organis
. The learners should be able to explain the stages of mitosis and meiosis they
have found on the activity.
Elaborate( Students apply the information learned)
. The teacher will discuss mitosis and meiosis, its stages, similarities and video clip,
diffrences, and cellular activities happened in each phase. PPT,
. Then the learners will be asked to refer to the factsheets/model on mitosis and projector,
meiosis and identify the different cellular activities occur in each stage.
Evaluate ( How will you know the learners learned the concept?)
. The learners will be given enough time to manipulate the stages of mitosis biscuit
and meiosis using localized cooked gulaman, jelly stick, and biscuit gulaman,
without looking on the model of miosis and meiosis. candies
Extend ( Deepen conceptual understanding through use in the new context)
. While the learners manipulating the stages. They will then give a brief descripti
in each phase of mitosis and meiosis based on their understanding.
