IA 207 – Handicraft & Cottage Industries (Mrs.

Cervas)

1.Define Cottage Industries. Do you believe that Cottage Industries help uplift the Countries Economic Growth? Cite a specific example in
which it contribute to stabilized the economic growth.
An industry where the creation of products and services is home-based, rather than factory-based. While products and services created by cottage
industry are often unique and distinctive given the fact that they are usually not mass-produced, producers in this sector often face numerous
disadvantages when trying to compete with much larger factory-based companies.

A "cottage industry" (also called the Domestic system) as an industry, primarily manufacturing, which includes many producers working from their
homes, typically part-time. In RA 3470 which is the Philippine law that created the government agency to oversee our cottage industry, the
National Cottage Industries Development Authority(NACIDA), the term "cottage industry" means an economic activity in small scale which is
carried out mainly in homes or in other places of profit and which is mainly done with the help of the members of the family.

The Philippine cottage industry may start small-scale but many of these industries have developed into huge exporting businesses which truly
help bring dollars into our country. The bamboo and rattan furniture that we manufacture are world-class and many hotels all over the world order
from us. We can also add our handicrafts like our shell products which are made into chandeliers and lamp stands and shades, our fine and
fashion jewelries with exquisite designs, our Marikina shoes for export, our abaca hats which are worn by royalties, and of course, holiday
decors which are all exported and sold in stores all over the world.

As years have gone by, many more cottage industry products are out in our local market--scented candles, baked cookies and goodies,
recycled art paper and notebooks, even local perfumes and aromatic soaps and lotions. All these create jobs for the Filipino, provide income for
their family, and of course, these cottage industries help the Philippine economy.

2. What is photography? Is a photo edited picture can still be called photography? Justify your answer. What are the advantages and
disadvantages of digital printing? Define lettering. What is the importance of lettering to you as a teacher, and as a form of instructional
materials which will you prefer, a hand lettering, a computerized printout, or both? Why?
Photography is derived from the Greek words photos (“light”) and graphein (“to draw”). It is a method of recording the image of an object
through the action of light, or related radiation, on a light-sensitive material.
Yes, the photo edited picture is still a form of photography because it is also a process of recording the image by which it improves the
quality of picture. Nowadays, it is called digital photography which allows the photographer to enhance the picture he has taken.

Below are the advantages and disadvantages of digital camera and printing:
Advantages
 Immediate image review and deletion is possible; lighting and composition can be assessed immediately, which ultimately conserves
storage space.
 Faster workflow: Management (colour and file), manipulation and printing tools are more versatile than conventional film processes.
However, batch processing of RAW files can be time consuming, even on a fast computer.
 Digital manipulation: A digital image can be modified and manipulated much easier and faster than with traditional negative and print
methods. The digital image to the right was captured in RAW format, processed and output in 3 different ways from the source RAW file,
then merged and further processed for color saturation and other special effects to produce a more dynamic result than was originally
captured with RAW image.

Disadvantages

 Whereas film cameras can have manual backups for electronic and electrical features, digital cameras are entirely dependent on an
electrical supply (usually batteries but sometimes power cord when in ‘tethered’ mode).
 Many digital sensors have less dynamic range than color print film. However, some newer CCDs such as Fuji’s Super CCD, which combines
diodes of different sensitivity, have improved upon this issue.
 When highlights burn out, they burn to white without details, while film cameras retain a reduced level of detail.
 High ISO image noise may manifest as multicolored speckles in digital images, rather than the less-objectionable “grain” of high ISO film.
While this speckling can be removed by noise reduction software, either in camera or on a computer, this can have a detrimental effect on
image quality as fine detail may be lost in the process.
 Aliasing may add patterns to images that do not exist and would not appear in film.
 The possibility that in the future certain digital file formats (for example, JPEG) may become obsolete/replaced.
 Dust particles can adhere to the cover glass of the image sensor in digital cameras, resulting in persisting dust spots in images. Film
cameras use a fresh piece of film for each shot, so dust does not build up on the film. Digital image sensors may be cleaned with a simple
cleaning kit or professionally, and some digital cameras have built-in sensor cleaning mechanisms, mitigating this problem.

Lettering is the process of forming letters, numerals, and other characters in technical drawing. It is used to describe, or provide detailed
specifications for, an object. With the goals of legibility and uniformity, styles are standardized and lettering ability has little relationship to normal
writing ability.

As a teacher, lettering is very important. One way to attract attention of the students is the visual aid that the teacher provides for the lesson. The
students will be amaze and it will encourage learning. The clarity of the hand writing of the teacher in the visual aid will provide clearer
understanding of the students to the lesson compared to the bad hand writing that will make the students assume the words that are confusing in
spelling. In the current, because of the technology available I preferred to use print out than hand lettering due to its speed in production and aside
from this is the uniformity of the words. It will lessen the time and effort in doing the traditional and will allow greater quantity of work can be finish.
