Recertification Drive: First Milestone Passed
Thanks to Ron Bjornstad, our Recertification
Coordinator, the petitioners we hired, and some of
our LPNM members who also collect submitted
some petition signatures, we now have
approximately 7100 petition signatures. Although
the Bureau of Elections (BoE) is notorious for
invalidating every signature they possibly can, as
the number of validated signatures we will need for
recertification is just a little less than 3800, the
7100 signatures collected should give us a
significant margin. Our next step will be to submit
these petition signatures to the BoE in Santa Fe.
Again, thanks to Ron Bjornstad for coordinating
this for us.
Still Looking for Libertarians
to Run as Candidates
So far, we have had only one person his intention
to sun for election. Even though you the elections
will not be until will be next year, now is the time to
start. The Annual LPNM State Convention will be
the second weekend in March, and one of the
items on the agenda will be to nominate our
candidates.
Look for local races, where there will probably be a
candidate running unopposed. Look for offices you
feel the incumbent is doing a bad job and needs to
be replaced, at all costs (not hard to find). You feel
someone needs to run against those people. Well,
why not you! What about running for one of the
State-wide offices?

LPNM 2006 Annual State Convention Date
Our 2006 State Convention will be the weekend of
March 10-12, 2006, to better facilitate timely
nominations of candidates, and to allow time for
preparations for the potential court case next
Spring. We’re planning on holding it in Rio Rancho
this time. Please plan on being there.
Now, let’s educate ourselves on the next of the
planks from our LP National Platform, so we will be
better able to present the principles to others.
I. Individual Rights and Civil Order
4. The War on Drugs
The Issue – The suffering that drug misuse has
brought about is deplorable; however, drug
prohibition causes more harm than drugs
themselves. The so-called "War on Drugs" is in
reality a war against the American people, our
Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It is a grave
threat to individual liberty, to domestic order and to
peace in the world.
The Principle – Individuals should have the right to
use drugs, whether for medical or recreational
purposes, without fear of legal reprisals, but must
be held legally responsible for the consequences of
their actions only if they violate others' rights.
Solutions – Social involvement by individuals is
essential to address the problem of substance
misuse and abuse. Popular education and
assistance groups are a better approach than
prohibition, and we support the activities of private
organizations as the best way to move forward on
the issue.
Transitional Action – Repeal all laws establishing
criminal or civil penalties for the use of drugs.
Repeal laws that infringe upon individual rights to
be secure in our persons, homes, and property as
protected by the Fourth Amendment. Stop the use
of "anti-crime" measures such as profiling or civil
asset forfeiture that reduce the standard of proof
historically borne by government in prosecutions.
Stop prosecuting accused non-violent drug
offenders, and pardon those previously convicted.

FARMINGTON -- Holding a sign that read, "Juan Mata is

my HERO," while wearing a T-shirt with the words, "Mike
Briseno is a Dirty Cop," printed on it, it was immediately
apparent where Joseph Knight's loyalties were.
Knight, a Libertarian, quietly picketed outside San Juan
County Magistrate Court while Mata, who was convicted
of harassment, stalking and criminal libel, was sentenced
Tuesday.
The case sparked local and national debate on whether
a private citizen can legally petition against a police
officer, especially since the New Mexico Court of
Appeals ruled that criminal libel was unconstitutional.
"It's the next step on the road to (getting) this atrocious
law off the books permanently," Knight said. "Cops
should realize it's in their best interest to do away with
this blue code, because when one of them looks (bad),
they all look bad. We're countering with the red, white
and blue code."
However, the majority of the nearly 35 Farmington
residents polled following Mata's sentencing said they did
not follow the case closely enough to comment and Joseph Knight, 57, of Flora Vista, the founder of the Law

days of probation for the crime and $114 in court costs.
Miller called the city's decision to file criminal libel
charges against Mata "foolish" because criminal libel has
been considered to be unconstitutional.

stand up on appeal," Miller said.

opinion of the case.

 Eric Dondero's Appearance on the
Harry Browne Radio Show

I thought everyone should know that I acquired, in its
entirety, the entire interview Harry Browne gave to Eric
Dondero Rittberg on his radio show last Saturday night.
It was a heated debate, as I subsequently found out, but
it wasn't until after the show that Eric changed his mind
on Harry after someone we know circulated an e-mail
which, in part, said that Browne had, for the longest time,
opposed the U.S.'s entry in WWII.
Interestingly enough, Bill Westmiller, the head of the
Republican Liberty Caucus, called into the show and
excoriated Eric for his insistent claim that the
organization supports the pro-war mindset and the
ideology of neolibertarianism (or liberventionism).
Westmiller even noted that Eric's "hatred for Muslims" is
driving him to go after the Muslims in the Middle East
because of what happened on 9/11.
I am going to post a copy of what Terry Liberty Parker
posted on the Libertarians Yahoo Group.
For what it's worth, I'm all for an open tent in the
libertarian movement. But there's a limit to my tolerance
for such an open tent, and Dondero exceeds my limit
across the board.
That's all I have to say on the matter. I've listened to the
show in its entirety, and believe me, I think you will be
disgusted with Dondero when you hear his comments.
Even a number of Harry's listeners call in and take
swipes at Dondero.

Congress is a confusing place. I really believe we need
to pass the Read the Bills Act just to figure out what the
heck is going on up there.
A case in point is the latest news about the "Online
Freedom of Speech Act" (HR 1606) which we've been
promoting on our home page for several months. This is
the bill that would exempt non-corporate Internet
communications from the McCain-Feingold campaign
finances regulations, and do so on the same basis as the
exemption for the mainstream media.
Now if you go to the Congressional website, "Thomas"
(www.thomas.loc.gov) and look up this bill you would see
that it ...
still only has 9 co-sponsors (we reported that to you
months ago)
has had no action to move it out of committee
has had no reported activity since April
So you wouldn't think this bill was anywhere close to
being voted on. But we've just been given some exciting
news. This excellent bill is apparently coming up for a
vote, perhaps as soon as Wednesday.
Here's what the bill's sponsor, Jeb Hensarling, has said,
"I wanted to give everyone a heads up that my bill, the
Online Freedom of Speech Act (H.R. 1606), will be
considered next Wednesday, November 2nd, on the
House floor. As many of you know, the bill is intended to
protect online political discourse from FEC regulation. I
strongly believe such regulation would needlessly limit
public debate and deprive Americans of their First
Amendment rights. A House vote on H.R. 1606 is a big
win for freedom, and I appreciate your support."
That's good news, and you can send a message to
Congress urging them to support this bill here:

HOST A MOVIE EVENT

If there is an existing Libertarian Party affiliate
organization in your county OR if you are working toward
organizing, you might consider hosting one or more
movie events as a way of generating interest.
I have three DVDs of movie clips given to me by a
"freedom fighter", Mr. Neil Pair, from Granbury, Texas.
These movie clips are also available from
www.reopen911.org and/or www.infowars.org. They may
be copied for "not-for-profit educational purposes" You
may also view clips, download and read about these
DVDs on these sites.
The three are. "Painful Deceptions", "Confronting the
Evidence" and "Martial Law" There is some overlapping
of material between the three, which makes all stand
alone. They are between 2 - 3 hours in length.
My personal thoughts after watching "Painful
Deceptions" and "Confronting the Evidence", "these
movie clips are exploratory-analysis type of pieces that
point out things that weren’t pointed out or emphasized
(or carefully avoided) in the news broadcasts following
911. They point out these facts and review the applicable
law of physics (and common sense) in such a manner
that the viewer may arrive at totally different conclusions
than those provided through the mainstream media.
Well done and very thought provoking."
"Martial Law" is something we all know exists to some
extent and is being planned for, on a much larger scale.
Alex Jones makes it a very real and personal issue.
Watching these clips just reminds us that tomorrow is
really today.

 GETTING STARTED

Where do you start in your endeavors to spread the
libertarian message? At the beginning, of course.
Have you told your friends and family about the ideals of
libertarianism? You might be afraid of doing this, thinking
that they will think you've lost your mind. Not to fear –
yes, some of them will tell you that. Others will agree with
you to a degree. The best way to sum it up is to say that
“as long as you're not hurting anyone else, you have the
right to live as you like, do what you want.” You'll be
surprised at how many times this gets the point across –
I certainly was while trying to explain this to potential
girlfriends. (Proof positive that being a libertarian doesn't
scare away potential mates – I'm still looking for other
reasons.)
How many letters to the editor have you written? There
are three basic criteria to consider when writing them:
• Is it concise? How many words do you need to get
the point across? Most newspaper editors will cut
you off at around 200 words. I find it's best to
keep the word count below 150.
• Is it topical? How well does your letter's topic fit in
with the issues of the day?
• Does it have some humor? It can't hurt to have
fun with politics, and humor can get your point
across when being serious all the time will put
your readership to sleep.
Even if your letters aren't printed, keep them on file and
keep submitting them. You can set up a weblog (“blog”)
of them on a service such as blogspot.com.
Have you considered sponsoring a cable-access TV
show, such as the ones that Bill Koehler and I have been
doing since 1998? It's easier than it looks, and the
stations will train you on how to use the equipment.
If you don't want to do a live show as we do, they will
accept pre-recorded materials as well. You can get a
camcorder and make your own documentary about the
local political scene, and give it a spin favoring free
markets.
Even if you don't want to make your own show, there are
lots of outfits that offer materials suitable for this format.
Laissez Faire Books has copies of John Stossel's ABC
specials available in both DVD and VHS formats. Milton
Friedman's PBS series Free to Choose is also good
here, as well as the materials available from Gun
Owners of America. (Bill and I are getting to the point of
making our own shows available on DVD, so maybe you
could run our stuff in your area. See our Myspace page
for the KCUF Media Group for details.)
Maybe you would be better at the radio venue. Every so
often, local radio stations will lose a host for whatever
reason, leaving you an opening to apply for. If you're not
available for that kind of radio, try www.live365.com,
where you can host your very own internet station.

Have you considered running for elected office? For a
run at state representative or state senator, it only takes
about 150-300 signatures to get on the ballot. Asking for
signatures can be the first stumbling block here, but
once you're past that, you're on the ballot. This is
especially important in races where the incumbent is
unopposed, as you can make the LPNM into the Party of
Opposition, with very little money spent. And lots of
Democrats and Republicans run for re-election
unopposed.
Some (non-partisan) things you can get involved in
(along with the partisan stuff for the LPNM, I hope):
The Simon Jester Project: I featured this in the last
issue, but it deserves a repeat mention here. See
www.simonjester.org for details.
Jury nullification: Inform your friends and family that they
have the right and duty to vote their consciences on the
law of the case in question, as well as the facts. Is it a
good law? Does the punishment specified fit the crime?
If not, you (and they) have the right to vote to acquit. One
percent of the population voting to acquit against bad
laws can start getting these things off the books.
Hemp TV – the crew and host there are the libertarian
camp for the most part. Spread the word about the show,
or if you want to get more involved, contact the show's
crew and volunteer to help out. The drug front of the War
on Americans must be exposed for what it is – the
sanctioning of certain murders – and Cindy & crew need
your help to do it.
Gun rights – most politicians (YES, even Republicans)
view the right to own and carry weapons as anathema to
“public order.” Most of them see guns in hands other
than their own (or the cops') as pointed at them, and for
good reason, considering the idiocies, insanities and
evils they inflict on everyone else through taxes and
regulations. Join a gun group or two, even if it is the
NRA. (Gun Owners of America is far better, in my
opinion, where politics is concerned.) Get a gun or three
and practice your shooting. Get to that range and fire a

Vernor Vinge.
All of the things I've suggested here don't cost all that
much, and don't require a lot of effort. Some of them can
be quite fun. I'm also open to hear about other things that
the membership has thought up along these lines.
