Itinerary
Day 1 Auckland

Please arrive by 3pm on day 1 as we will have an important welcome meeting. If your flight arrives too late we
recommend that you consider booking a night's accommodation prior to the trip so you can ensure you are
able to attend this meeting. We will be collecting your local payment, insurance details and next of kin
information at this meeting so please ensure you have all details on hand to give to your leader. A note will be
left at reception telling you where this important meeting will take place. Please ask a member of reception for
this information.

Kia ora and welcome to Auckland, New Zealand's largest city with a population of just over one million people.
There is a distinct Pacific flavour to the 'City of Sails' and this can be seen in the streets and the local markets.
The vibrant waterfront region, built to its current state for the America's Cup sailing challenges, is now a well-
frequented local bar and restaurant hub. If you have extra time you might like to take a day trip to one of the
many outer islands found in the Hauraki Gulf.

On the afternoon of day 1 we take a local bus to one of Auckland's many volcanic cones for stunning views of
the city.

Day 2 Coromandel Peninsula

On the morning of day 2 we travel by minibus to the seaside holiday settlement of Hahei on the Coromandel
Peninsula (2.5 hours). Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean the peninsula has a rugged volcanic interior cloaked
in forest while its fringes are scattered with picturesque coves and white sand beaches. Walk the coastal path
or take an optional sea kayak trip to remote Cathedral Cove, climb to the top of a historic Maori pa (fortified
village) site or simply hang out on the beach with local holiday makers enjoying the sun, sand and surf. If the
tides are right we will visit Hot Water Beach during our stay on the Coromandel. Thermal waters brewing
below the sands on this famed surf beach allow you to dig your own hot-water pool.

Day 3 Rotorua

http://www.intrepidtravel.com/tripnotes/PSZ/2010-01-01 28/11/2009
Trip Notes - Intrepid Travel Page 3 of 13
On day 3 we travel by minibus to Rotorua (3.5 hours). Shaped by the forces of the 'Pacific Ring of Fire'
Rotorua is quite literally the North Island's hottest tourist spot; home to bubbling mud pools, exploding geysers
and surreally coloured mineral terraces and springs. Time is available to visit one of the region's renowned
geothermal parks or have a soak in a mineral thermal pool. For a change in pace have a go at zorbing; a
quirky kiwi invention. It's simple: Climb into an inflated plastic sphere and roll down a hill!

Experience the warm hospitality of Maori culture when welcomed onto a 'marae' - The sacred meeting place of
a Maori community. Enjoy traditional Maori performances including the haka (war dance) and action songs
which tell stories of old. Feast on a 'hangi' meal cooked in an underground oven and learn about Maori culture
with our local hosts.

Please refer to 'Important notes' regarding accommodation.

Days 4-5 Tongariro National Park

On the afternoon of day 4 we travel by coach (3 hours) to the remote village of National Park located on the
central North Island's volcanic plateau. This is an ideal base for exploring the Tongariro National Park, New
Zealand's first national park and gifted to the people of New Zealand in 1887 by local Maori. Peter Jackson's
Mordor; Home of the Dark Lord Sauron in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy was shot in the area. The conical
silhouette of Mt Ngauruhoe can be seen from our accommodation and was digitally transformed to create Mt
Doom.

There is a great selection of optional walks in the Tongariro National Park, ranging from easy half hour strolls
to more challenging alpine hikes. Take up the challenge of the 'Tongariro Crossing Alpine', dubbed New
Zealand's finest one day walk. The 18.5km hike explores an eerie, lunar-like landscape of volcanic craters,
steaming vents, hot springs and old lava flows before descending into lush native bush.

Please refer to 'Important notes' regarding accommodation.

Days 6-7 Napier

On day 6 we travel by bus to coastal Napier in the sun-drenched Hawkes Bay (3 hours). Known for its fine
wines, gourmet food, art deco designs and wonderful beaches, Hawkes Bay is New Zealand's Mediterranean
enclave. Wrap your taste buds around local beer, cider, wine and chocolate tasting as we cycle through the
wineries and orchards of the area. Please note that under New Zealand legislation bicycle helmets are
compulsory. Bicycle helmets are provided and must be worn. Follow your group leader downtown for a tour of
the city's art deco heritage, a legacy of the devastating 1931 Napier Earthquake. There is spare time to prowl
the isles of an antique shop, stroll Marine Parade for views of the Pacific Ocean or explore Cape Kidnapper's
gannet colonies.

Days 8-9 Wellington

We arrive in Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, by coach (5 hours) on the afternoon of day 8. Set on the
edge of a picturesque harbour and surrounded by rolling green hills, the vibrant city of Wellington offers
something for everyone. Get orientated by joining your group leader for a guided walk of the city that includes
a ride up Wellington's iconic cable car. Day 9 is free for you to explore Te Papa, New Zealand's fantastically
innovative National Museum, tour Parliament House, catch a live theatre performance at one of the city's
professional or fringe theatres or simply wander Wellington's trendy shopping and eating streets. Your group
leader will be available to help you plan your time and of course give some great local tips on what to see and
do.

Day 10 Marlborough Sounds

This morning we leave the North Island taking the scenic Interislander ferry (3 hours) across the Cook Strait
and into the Marlborough Sounds. The Marlborough Sounds is a vast maze of deep channels and secluded
bays at the north-east corner of the South Island. A short water taxi ride brings us to our beautifully remote
home for the night. Hike or mountain bike a section of the famed Queen Charlotte Track, kayak, swim or even
try your luck fishing for your dinner! Relax with a glass of local Sauvignon Blanc and enjoy the scenery - You
don't have to go very far as the water views from our accommodation are superb.

Please refer to 'Important notes' regarding accommodation.

Days 11-12 Kaikoura

http://www.intrepidtravel.com/tripnotes/PSZ/2010-01-01 28/11/2009
Trip Notes - Intrepid Travel Page 4 of 13
On day 11 we take a train journey along the coast to the seaside town of Kaikoura (2.5 hours). Teeming with
marine life, Kaikoura is an animal enthusiast's dream. Go whale-watching on a boat or from the air, swim with
dolphins, spot albatross at sea or wander around the shoreline to nearby seal colonies. Fishing is one of the
area's main industries so indulge with a dinner of kaimoana or New Zealand seafood. You are free to explore
on day 12 and your group leader can help make arrangements for any of the above optional activities.

Days 13-14 Christchurch

On the morning of day 13 we travel by bus to Christchurch (3.5 hours). Admire the many heritage buildings
and tree-lined streets of this very "English" South Island city on a guided orientation walk with your group
leader. Sit back, relax and see the central city from a different perspective as you punt down the Avon River or
visit the impressive Gothic styled Cathedral and climb the 134 steps for the view from the top of the church
spire!

Please note that on day 14 the composition of the group may change as well as your group leader. There are
no activities planned until our group meeting this evening at 6pm where you will have a chance to meet any
new travel companions and talk about the next leg of the trip. Your leader will collect the second half of your
local payment at this meeting. The day is yours to explore Christchurch and its surrounds. Experience French
infused Akaroa, weather the icy blasts of an Antarctic storm at the International Antarctic Centre or ride the
gondola up Mt Cavendish for breathtaking views of the area.

Days 15-16 Mt Cook

On day 15 we travel by bus to the alpine village of Mount Cook (5.5 hours) via the Canterbury plains, a
patchwork landscape of crops, dairy farms and grazing sheep. Our accommodation is nestled at the base of
the Southern Alps mountain range with awesome views to Mt Cook, the country's highest peak at 3754
metres.

There are numerous optional alpine walks in the area to suit all levels of fitness, all with a stunning backdrop
of mountains, lakes, streams and glaciers. Hear the squawk of the world's only alpine parrot, the kea, and in
spring and summer, spot the Mt Cook lily, the world's largest buttercup. Spend some time at the Sir Edmund
Hillary Alpine Centre and be inspired by the adventures of this great New Zealand hero. Take a boat trip to the
terminal moraine of the Tasman Glacier (October to May) or soar above it all with a scenic helicopter or ski
plane flight.

Please refer to 'Important Notes' regarding our accommodation.

Days 17-19 Queenstown

On day 17 we travel by bus to the popular resort of Queenstown (5.5 hours). There is no shortage of activities
to thrill, entertain and inspire in this town. Adventure seekers can try white-water rafting, river boarding, jet
boat rides, bungee jumping, paragliding, hang gliding or sky diving. For something less heart-racing
Queenstown has some great hiking, hot air ballooning, 4WD tours of Lord of the Rings sites and horse riding.
You might want to include a visit to Arrowtown - a well-preserved gold mining town or cruise Lake Wakatipu on
a historic steamboat.

We have two free days in Queenstown to fill with activities and your Group Leader can help make
arrangements for any of the above optional trips. During our stay we will ride the Skyline Gondola for a
postcard picture view of the area.

Days 20-21 Te Anau/Milford Sound

On day 20 we travel by bus to Te Anau (2.5 hours) our base for explorations into the spectacular Fiordland
National Park. This afternoon choose to visit nearby glow-worm caves or take a scenic flight in this region of
waterfalls, rainforest, glacial carved lakes and mountain peaks.

On day 21 we join local friends for a guided day trip into Milford Sound. We escape the crowds and explore
the grandeur of the fiord by sea kayak for the ultimate wilderness experience. Be on the look out for New
Zealand fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and the occasional crested penguin. If weather conditions do not allow
for safe kayaking a scenic boat trip will be substituted.

Days 22-23 Wanaka

http://www.intrepidtravel.com/tripnotes/PSZ/2010-01-01 28/11/2009
Trip Notes - Intrepid Travel Page 5 of 13
On day 22 we travel by bus to Wanaka (5.5 hours). The relaxed vibe of Wanaka probably has a lot to do with
its stunning natural surrounds. Nestled between the Southern Alps and a pristine glacial lake, locals, New
Zealand and international holiday makers enjoy the skiing, biking, climbing, hiking and water sports options
available in the area. For a quirky alternative visit tackle the maze at Puzzling World, a unique local attraction.
In the evening enjoy a glass of local wine with a kiwi barbeque or take in a movie at the Cinema Paradiso; a
theatre where sofas and armchairs have replaced the more conventional seating!

Days 24-25 Franz Josef Glacier

A bus ride through the Mount Aspiring National Park brings us to Franz Josef (6 hours). The small township is
located in Te Wahipounamu, the Southwest New Zealand World Heritage area. Ancient glaciers flow from the
steep Southern Alps into lush, temperate rainforest. There is opportunity to take a scenic flight, soak in a
thermal pool, quad bike or hike; allowing you to take in the beauty of this special part of the world.

On day 25 a guided half day walk unlike any other will take us onto the spectacular icy terrain of the Franz
Josef Glacier. You may find yourself squeezing through tight blue crevasses or sliding through ice caves as
you climb to impressive views of the glacier carved Waiho valley. All equipment is provided and expert guides
ensure we will be well looked after but be prepared for some physical exertion. Your Group Leader will advise
of the option to upgrade to a full day, ice climbing or helihike trip on the Franz Josef Glacier.

Day 26 West Coast Pub

Jump aboard a bus with local friends for a guided journey up the West Coast. We pass through the artisan
town of Hokitika, famous for its pounamu or greenstone and we have the chance to look at some of the
intricate carving in progress. We explore the Paparoa National Park with its towering cliffs cloaked in native
Nikau forest and home to the famed Pancake Rocks; columns of limestone resembling stacked pancakes.
When conditions are right stand back as the swell of the Tasman Sea creates thundering blowholes.

Our base for the evening is a historic West Coast mining town. Get to know the locals at the only pub in town,
which also happens to be our home. Enjoy some New Zealand home-style cooking.

Please refer to 'Important Notes' regarding our accommodation.

Days 27-28 Christchurch

Brave the darkness exploring an old gold mining tunnel or indulge in some beer tasting after a tour of the local
brewery before we leave the West Coast by train, taking the scenic Tranzalpine railway across the Southern
Alps and into Christchurch (4.5 hours). There are many great restaurants and bars at which to celebrate the
end of our trip this evening.

Day 28 is departure day. As there are no activities planned today you are free to depart at any time. Check out
time from the hotel is 10:00am. If you are departing later, enquire with hotel reception as to where luggage can
be stored. Browse the stalls at the Arts Centre's bustling weekend market for some last-minute souvenir
shopping.

Arrival Complications
We don't expect any problems (and nor should you!) but if for any reason you are unable to commence your
group trip as scheduled, please contact your starting point hotel, requesting that you speak to or leave a
message for your trip leader.

If you have pre-booked an airport transfer (where available) and have not made contact with our

the Joining Instructions in the Trip

No refund is available on missed transfers or portions of your trip owing to a different flight arrival or delayed
flight arrival. Any
additional cost incurred in order to meet up with your group is at your own expense.

Intrepid Original

This is how it all started; the trips that made us one of the world's leading operators of small group adventures.
And they're still as popular as ever! Original trips are all about variety: the places, the people, the activities,
and even the accommodation and transport we use. From homestays to market trips to visits to community
projects, there's a new experience every day, with many activities included.

Group Size
Maximum of 12 travellers per group

Accommodation
Hotels (10 nts), motels (10 nts), hostel (2 nts), quad share lodge (3 nts), local pub (1 nt), marae (1nt)

Our accommodation unless otherwise stated in the day to day itinerary is a combination of hotel and motel
stays with bathroom and tea and coffee making facilities or a small kitchenette in the room or unit.

Throughout the trip we request that our accommodation prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we
are arriving prior to normal check in time. However this is not always possible which means we will not be able
to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new
destination.

If you have purchased pre or post trip accommodation, you may be required to change rooms from your trip

accommodation for these extra nights.

Meals
While travelling with us you will experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Your group
leader will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip. On our camping trips we often cook the
region's specialties so you don't miss out. To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and
with whom to eat generally not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting
flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy
each other's company. There is no obligation to do this though. Please check the 'meal inclusions' section of
these notes for details of meals included.

Allow NZD $1150 for meals not included.

Meal Inclusions
2 Breakfasts, 2 Dinners

Single Travellers
With the exception of our Comfort trips, our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not
involve a single supplement. Single travellers share with people of the same sex for the duration of the trip, in
accommodation ranging from twin to multi-share. Please note some of our itineraries have accommodation
booked on a mixed gender share basis - where applicable this will be specified in our Trip Notes. On our
Comfort trips you have the choice of sharing or paying a single supplement. Please note that this only applies
to accommodation during the tour. Pre- and post-trip accommodation will be booked on a single room basis.

Physical Rating
rating definitions

Depending on the trip, activities may include longer walks over uneven surfaces or adventure activities like flat
water kayaking or a long day's bike ride, in conditions which could be unfavourable. You will raise your heart
rate on these trips, so a basic level of aerobic fitness is required.

Culture Shock Rating

rating definitions

The trip may include a range of accommodation, such as basic hotels with western facilities or overnight
trains. Days of being on the move are generally well interspersed, communication with the outside world is
usually ever-present and a wide variety of food is commonly available.

Important Notes
1. Please note that some of our included activities are contingent on weather conditions. We will arrange an
alternative if an included activity is deemed unsafe.

2. With groups of 10 or more we stay overnight on a marae (meeting place of a Maori community) in Rotorua.
On the marae the group sleeps together in one big room. Shower and toilet facilities are basic and in a
separate ablutions block. When the marae is not available for overnight stays the group is accommodated in
double or twin share rooms at a motel in Rotorua.

3. Our accommodation in National Park is generally in double or twin share rooms. At times triple share rooms

http://www.intrepidtravel.com/tripnotes/PSZ/2010-01-01 28/11/2009
Trip Notes - Intrepid Travel Page 9 of 13
may be used and they will always group only male or only female passengers together.

4. Our accommodation in the Marlborough Sounds is in quad share lodge rooms. Where possible this will be
in single sex rooms and thus couples may be separated. Talk to your group leader on day 1 about the option
to upgrade to a private room.

5. Our Mt Cook accommodation is in quad share lodge rooms. Where possible this will be in single sex rooms
and thus couples may be separated. Talk to your group leader on day 1 about the option to upgrade to a
private room.

6. Accommodation at the West Coast pub stay is basic and has shared bathrooms.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all our trips. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical
expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal
liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects.
When travelling on a group trip, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance
and the insurance company's 24 hour emergency contact number has been seen by your leader.
If you have credit card insurance your tour leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter,
the level of coverage, policy number and emergency contact telephone number rather than the Bank's name
and credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country.

Please go to www.intrepidtravel.com/insurance.php for links to various travel insurance providers.

Visas
Please note that visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. The visa requirements for your trip vary
depending on where you are from and where you are going. We keep the following information up to date as
much as possible, but rules do change. It is important that you check for yourself.

Health
All Intrepid travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully in the group travel
experience. If in the opinion of our group leader or company representative any traveller is unable to complete
the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, Intrepid reserves the right to
exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund. We therefore ask that you read the itinerary in these trip
notes thoroughly and then realistically self-assess your physical ability to complete the trip as described.
Please consult with your doctor if you have any doubts.
There are no specific health requirements for this trip. However, you should consult your doctor for up-to-date
medical travel information about before departure. We recommend that you carry a First Aid kit as well as any
personal medical requirements. Please be aware that we are in remote areas and away from medical facilities
for some time during this trip, and for legal reasons our leaders are prohibited from administering any type of
drug including headache tablets, antibiotics, etc.

Money Exchange
Currency exchange rates often fluctuate. For the most up to date rates please refer to the following website:
www.oanda.com.

The currency of New Zealand is the New Zealand dollar (NZD). USD1 = NZD1.76 (rate current 04/05/2009).
For the latest exchange rate refer to www.oanda.com or check at your local bank or in the newspaper prior to
travel.

The most convenient and cheapest way to acquire money is via an Automated Teller Machine (ATM). This
allows you to draw funds from your personal account at a superior exchange rate. Most ATM's will also give
you a cash advance on your credit card but be wary of high fees imposed by banks for this service. Bank fees
for these withdrawals can be either a flat rate or a percentage of the amount withdrawn. Check with your bank
for information on their international fees. There are ATMs (which accept both Visa and MasterCard)
throughout the main stops on our itinerary and these are also accepted by the majority of local service
providers. When leaving home don't forget your PIN number and make sure you know the telephone number

http://www.intrepidtravel.com/tripnotes/PSZ/2010-01-01 28/11/2009
Trip Notes - Intrepid Travel Page 10 of 13
for cancelling your card if it is stolen.

It is a smart idea to take some of your money in travellers cheques of a major brand in a major currency ($US,
GBP, $AUD and EURO are all fine). Travellers cheques have security advantages although please be aware
that the exchange rates may not be favourable and that it is difficult to change Traveller's cheques in remote
locations, on weekends and public holidays.

Spending Money
Every traveller is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travellers may drink
more than others while other travellers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your own
spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping, participating in optional activities and tipping.
Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.

Departure Tax
Please allow NZ$25 for departure tax for international flights from Christchurch Airport. There is no departure
tax for international flights from Auckland Airport.

Emergency Funds
Please also make sure you have access to an additional USD$400, to be used when unforeseen incidents or
circumstances outside our control (eg. a natural disaster, civil unrest or an outbreak of bird flu) necessitate a
change to our planned route.

Issues On Your Trip

While we always endeavour to provide the best possible holiday experience, due to the nature of travel and
the areas we visit sometimes things can and do go wrong. Should any issue occur while you are on your trip it
is imperative that you discuss this with your group leader or our local partner straight away so that they can do
their best to rectify the problem and save any potential negative impact on the rest of your trip.

We recognise that there may be times when your group leader/local partner may not be able to resolve a
situation to your satisfaction - if this is the case please ask the leader if you may speak to their direct manager.

You may also choose to provide details in your online feedback which we ask you to complete within 30 days
of the end of your trip but we do ask you to be aware that it is very difficult for us to provide any practical help
after the trip is complete.

Keeping in Touch - communication while on the road

If you need to be contacted while travelling we recommend email. Email cafes are generally available
throughout the regions we visit, although it is possible you may be without email contact for several days on
some itineraries. If someone wishes to contact you in an emergency while you are on one of our trips we
recommend that they contact your local booking agent, or refer to our emergency contact details. We don't
recommend that family and friends try to contact you through hotels, as they are subject to change and the
reception staff may not speak English.

Emergency Contact
In the case of a genuine crisis or emergency, Intrepid's New Zealand Office can be reached on Tel: +64 9 529
5310. For further contact details please use the following page: http://www.intrepidtravel.com/ourtrips/contact/.

Your Fellow Travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of
travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range
of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group -
patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience.
Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain
http://www.intrepidtravel.com/tripnotes/PSZ/2010-01-01 28/11/2009
Trip Notes - Intrepid Travel Page 11 of 13
time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the
very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little
effort on your part.

Please note that due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal
information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.

Group Leader
All Intrepid group trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to take
the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. They will provide information on the
places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating
venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect
them to have a broad general knowledge of the countries visited on the trip, including historical, cultural,
religious and social aspects. We also use local guides where we think more specific knowledge will add to the
enjoyment of the places we are visiting- we think it's the best of both worlds. Your leader is available from 12
midday on arrival day until 12 midday on departure day.

Responsible Travel
We believe strongly in low impact or rather positive impact tourism. Broadly speaking this means that we try to
minimise the negative aspects of tourism on the local cultures and environments that we visit and highlight the
positive aspects. Please refer to our website at www.intrepidtravel.com/responsibletravel for further details
and suggestions on how you can be a responsible traveller.

A Couple of Rules
Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the
land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some
parts of the world but is not acceptable for Intrepid travellers. Intrepid's philosophy of travel is one of respect
towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make our destinations such special
places. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader has the right
to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.

The Intrepid Foundation

Since Intrepid Travel commenced operating in 1989 we have been committed to giving something back to the
communities we visit. One way has been through our support for local humanitarian, development and
conservation projects. Many of our travellers want to contribute something too. To make things easier we
established The Intrepid Foundation Inc. All donations to The Intrepid Foundation are matched dollar for dollar
by Intrepid Travel and every cent gets there as Intrepid Travel pays for all the administration costs. Donating is
simple and secure. Please ask your group leader for information on the projects we support in-country through
The Intrepid Foundation; or go to our website: www.theintrepidfoundation.org

Laundry
Self-service laundry facilities are available at the majority of our accommodation at a cost of approximately
NZ$4 per load.

What to Take
What you need to bring will vary according to the trip style you have chosen, the countries you are visiting and
when you are travelling. Generally speaking you should pack as lightly as possible. On the vast majority of our
trips you are expected to carry your own luggage and although you will not be required to walk long distances
with your luggage (max 30 minutes) we recommend keeping the weight under 10kg/22lb.

Please note that some airlines we use on our trips may have a luggage limit of 10-15kg per person over which
excess luggage fees may apply. We advise that you pack to keep your luggage under this weight limit as
excess luggage fees are the sole responsibility of the traveller.

Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would

suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend
your bag has carry straps. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for daytrips.

The sale of bottled water contributes to an enormous environmental problem around the world. In addition to
the water in bottles, the production of a 1 litre plastic bottle takes 2 litres of water and 200ml of oil. A large
proportion end up in limited landfill or discarded in waterways and natural environments. Please avoid the
purchase of bottled water by refilling from the tap or from drinking water dispensers which are provided at
some of our accommodation.

sunshine in New Zealand is harsh and a sunhat and sunglasses are a must.

Safety
Many national governments provide a regularly updated advice service on safety issues involved with
international travel. We recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest travel information
before departure. Please refer to our website's Safety page for links to major travel advisories and updates on
safety issues affecting our trips: www.intrepidtravel.com/safety.
We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe-keeping of your
passport, air tickets, cash and other valuable items. Leave your valuable jewellery at home - you won't need it
while travelling. Many of our hotels have safety deposit boxes, which is the most secure way of storing your
valuables. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage.
Your leader will accompany you on all included activities however during your trip you will have some free time
to pursue your own interests, relax and take it easy or explore at your leisure. While your group leader will
assist you with the available options in a given location, please note that any optional activities you undertake
are not part of your Intrepid itinerary, and Intrepid makes no representations about the safety of the activity or
the standard of the operators running them. Please use your own good judgment when selecting an activity in
your free time. Please also note that your group leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the
trip itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
For more details on the type of conditions and safety standards you can expect on your trip, please refer to
Intrepid's operational safety policy at www.intrepidtravel.com/safety.
We recommend that you take a moment to read through this information before travelling, and would
appreciate any feedback on how well it is being implemented in the field.
