An Early
Spring
Break I

S taff and students in
Rolling River School
Division had a bit of an
early taste to their upcom-
ing spring break this past
week.
RRSD Administration
made the decision to close
all schools and bus routes
in the Division not once,
but twice this week. The
first shut down came on
Tuesday, March 3rd fol-
lowing icy road conditions,
in some areas, which were
created Monday night and
early Tuesday morning.
Then, following Wednes-
day afternoon and eve-
nings dump of snow, roads
were again deemed unsafe
by school division officials
who closed all schools and
bus routes again yesterday,
Thursday, March 5th.
These decisions, made
to ensure the safety of stu-
dents and staff travelling
from rural areas, were en-
joyed by most students
excited for a stay-home
day. However, some work-
ing parents and caregiv-
ers were left scrambling to
find last-minute child care
for the day as they still had
to go to work.

of March 29th.

A Warm Place For Pets

Youth Bowlers Secure a Spot at Nationals

home the gold medal at
the Bantam Boys Doubles
Provincial Championship
which was held in Winni-
peg on Sunday, March 1st
after earning their spot at
the Doubles Team Zones
Tournament the day be-
fore with a team average
of 258.5 for four games.
The top six teams in each
division were able to move
on to Sunday’s Provincial
Championship. The boys
averaged 303 for the five-
game playoff, bringing
home first place with a 28

ers from Winnipeg, who all
qualified to represent team
Manitoba in the upcoming
national event.
The Manitoba 220 Pro-
vincials was held in Car-
man on February 15th.

Minnedosa Bowl is
preparing to host the Man-
itoba “Open Provincials”
over the Easter weekend in
a three-day bowling event.
Bowlers from Central,
Westman and Winnipeg
will compete to be the top
three top male and female
bowlers, to form a mixed
team to represent Mani-
toba at the National Open
Championships. These
nationals will be held in
Gatineau, QC at the end of
May.
For the Minnedosa
Bowl’s Club 55, they will
be competing in the next
couple of weeks to qualify
for one of the spots at the
provincials being held in
Winnipeg in May. The top
team from the Provincial
playoffs will go on to repre-
sent Manitoba at the Can-
ada Cup Club 55 Nationals
being held in Winnipeg in
July.

Provincial curling...
It’s curling week in Minnedosa as our commu-
nity hosts the much anticipated Asham U18 Provincial
Championships. The bonspiel opened Wednesday night
and runs until Sunday with finals scheduled to begin at 4
p.m. Head on down to the curling club to cheer on these
young curlers as they compete in the provincials!

Minnedosa’s Magen Swift will showcase her Boho
Soul Kombucha in Winnipeg at the Love Local Manitoba
event in Winnipeg tomorrow, Saturday, March 7th. Swift
is one of 42 vendors appearing at the event which focuses
on locally-made food and drinks. Other Westman ven-
dors will include Neepawa’s Farmery Estate Brewery and
Killarney’s Rugby Orchards winery.

Study Manitoba, Welcoming the World

toba School Divisions was
born. In the past 11 years,
over 700 students from 23
countries have attended in
schools in Beautiful Plains,
Fort La Bosse, Rolling Riv-
er, Southwest Horizon, and
Turtle Mountain School
Divisions.
Students in grades
9-12 come to improve their
English skills, to have aca-
demic experiences and to
learn about Canadian cul-
ture. For many, it is their
first time away from home.
Attracting students to
small town Manitoba was a
challenge at first. There is
a different way of life here.
As our program has grown,
so has our reputation for
offering an experience that
is different from that of
large city programs. There
are many unique oppor-
tunities in our small com-
winter sports, harvest
meals in the fields or wel-
coming newborn animals
in the spring. Families also
appreciate knowing that
their children are com-
ing to a community where
they are safe.
Homestay families are
a very important piece of
the program. An amazing
network of families have
opened their hearts and
homes to these young peo-
ple. Students are matched
with families based on
profile information they
provide. Active students
are matched with active
families, passionate mu-
sic students with families
who can support their pas-
sion, students who wish to
continue on their religious
practices with families
who are like-minded, that
kind of thing.
Hosting a young per-
son from abroad is a life
changing experience for
both sides. Friendships
are formed that can be
maintained long after the
departure date. Many
families are still in contact
years later and they tell us
that now they have chil-

Are the matches al-
ways successful? No, not
always. In those cases, the

lies are encouraged to

Celebrating Five Years at Clanwilliam Store

M onday, March 9th
was a day of cel-
ebration for Maxine Mut-
ter as she celebrated her
fifth year of business for
the Clanwilliam Store. The
old brick building that sits
dead centre Clanwilliam’s
Main Street was filled with
patrons helping her mark
tribute to the day.
Coffee and snacks
were available to anyone
who took part in the day
and there was a crossword
challenge during the after-
noon where the winning
team received gift certifi-
cates for Maxine’s home-
made lunches and a box of
chocolates.
The Clanwilliam Store
is open Monday to Friday
and always has an array of
fresh homemade baking to
be had. Maxine is able to
take special baking orders
if you let her know what
you need and the word on
the street is that her made
from scratch lunches are
both filling and delicious.
The ground on which
the store is located has
seen its fair share of busi-
nesses throughout the
decades. The original Mc-
Quarrie’s Store opened
on February 19th, 1903
by Robert A. McQuar-
rie and W.A.B. Hassett of
Minnedosa. Stock items
during that time consisted
of groceries, clothing, fur,
shoes, crockery, hardware,
dry goods and furniture.
Unfortunately, this build-
ing burned down on Sep-
tember 21, 1921, however
only three months later, on
December 10th, the store
re-opened in the new brick
building that people are fa-
miliar with today.
In 1953, Robert re-
tired, and his son Archie
took over operations. Ar-
chie operated the general
store until the early 1960’s
when he decided to close
the doors, due to lack of
customers and business.
The building was used
for a woodworking shop
for years after until 1974,
when the building was tak-
en over by Walter and Mary
Skogstad. The building was
back open for business
and offered a Post Office,
groceries and appliances.
Skogstad’s continued
to run the store, with a
large selection of new and

used appliances, until 1989
when Philip and Helen
Humphries purchased the
grocery store. Humphries
ran the business until 2002
when Larry and Dorothy
Syslak purchased it and
renamed the business The
Clanwilliam General Store.
At this time the building
underwent extensive reno-
vating and the Post Office
was brought back. Follow-

Uncovering Buried Treasure

R ecently, during a wa-
ter break dig here in
Minnedosa, Town em-
ployee, Marty Moyer found
a unique buried treasure
– a Manitoba license plate
from 1912!
At 108 years of age,
the license plate is still in
remarkably good condi-
tion with only a little rust
on it. The plate measures
approximately 4.5 inches
wide by 10 inches long and
features white lettering
and numbering on a black
background.
The plate number is
1481 and Marty recalled
reading about Dr. Gor-
don Goldsborough of the
Manitoba Historical Soci-
ety undertaking a Mani-
toba 1912 License Plate
project. Moyer reached out
to Goldsborough for addi-
tional information.
Dr. Goldsborough’s
research determined that

license plate 1481 was car-
ried on a Ford automobile
registered to Martin N.
Pederson. Born in Nor-
way in 1866, Pederson had
come to Canada in 1887
and became a Canadian
citizen in 1891. He farmed
at SE 34-16-18-W1, a few
miles north of Minnedosa,
northwest of Clanwilliam.
He was married with eight
children, two sons and six
daughters.
How Pederson’s li-
cense plate ended up
buried in Minnedosa is
somewhat of a mystery.
However, Dr. Goldsbor-
ough’s 1912 License Plate
Project found that in the
early 20th century, it was
common for waste met-
als, including old licence
plates, to be used as fill.
A year before this li-
cence plates issue, in 1911,
the Manitoba government
began issuing standard-
ized plates to automo-
bile owners. Early licence

plates were ceramic cov-
ered metal and the first
year of Manitoba plates
were blue with white let-
tering and numbering.
The second year, 1912, saw
a black background with
white lettering and num-
bering, as found with the
recently uncovered Peder-
son plate.
According to the
Minnedosa history book,
Valley Views, published
in 1983 during our com-
munity’s centennial year,
the first reference to an
automobile in Minnedosa
was in 1905 when two cars
passed through town. That
must have been quite a
spectacular sight to see
at the time! In 1912, the
same year as the recently
unearthed license plate,
the Minnedosa Auto As-
sociation was formed and
our community’s first car
accident was reported in
1915 when a car rolled off
the dam into the lake.

Remembering Pat With a Full Day of Yoga

F our years to the day,
after her passing, lo-
cal resident Pat Graham
was honoured in a way she
would have truly loved.
Saturday, February 29th,
2020 (Leap Day) saw ap-
proximately 60 people
gather at the 50+ Centre for
a celebration of Pat’s mem-
ory. The day was filled with
mediation, yoga and dis-
cussion.
The free 12-hour event
was hosted by a group of
ladies who practiced un-
der Pat and were inspired
by her soul and teachings.

practiced under Pat a cou-
ple of times, however the
impact of those sessions
stayed with her long af-
ter. “We speak of Pat often

Wraps Up Another Season

T he final Expressions
Concert for the 2019
- 2020 season was held
on Monday, March 2nd at
Tanner’s Crossing School.
The duo, Chelsey June and
Jaaji, hail from Ottawa and
filled the halls of TCS with
a variety of music genres
and instruments.
Earlier in the day the
pair performed in front of
the grades seven to twelve
at MCI. This is nothing
new for Chelsey and Jaaji
as both see the value in at-
tending schools through-
out their tours to spread
a lesson of communica-
tion, acceptance, love and
understand of the human
race. No matter what our
colour, background or cul-
ture, the message is to ac-
cept one another and allow
everyone to be themselves.
The pair spoke of Jaaji’s up-
bringing in a far northern
fly-in community where
the price of groceries and
items were sky high. The
importance of hunting,
not only to feed family but
also to utilize every part of
the animal to make musi-
cal instruments, furniture
and/or jewelry was of the
upmost importance.
While Chelsey played

I heard that Pat passed
away on a leap day the idea
popped into my head that
we could honour this great
lady on the anniversary of
her death. I casually men-
tioned the idea to a group
at the end of November
and the reaction was very

yoga, I set the intention
and took one step at time,
leading toward our special
day.”
Following her un-
timely passing, several of
Pat’s students decided to
carry on the teachings of
the craft. Many of these
former students were on
hand throughout the day
to guide sessions in medi-
ation, active physical yoga,
along with informational
her handheld drum or
flutes and Jaaji his guitar,
the two sang in unison to
teach the language of Inuk-
titut. The students watched
with intent and after a few
songs could be seen toe
tapping and swaying to the
music.
“We were so im-
pressed and inspired by
the positivity that Twin
Flames displayed when
they showcased for the
Manitoba Arts Network
in Portage in 2018,” stated

for men and boys with
instructors Jean Olenick,
Trish Mcbratney, Erin Al-
exander and Solange La-
belle.
“Pat’s influence was to
give it forward,” explained
McLennan. “So, there are
also plans to offer free Intro
to Yoga sessions in order to
address one of the barriers

Chief who now plays as part of the University of Alberta

on the Canadian sector
of Normandy beach by
10 a.m. All soldiers who
were part of this Operation
Overlord knew they were
part of one of the largest
military operations of their
time.
The first few days
on the beach were very
uneasy. The first night,
Alex was on guard duty
at midnight. Some Ger-
man planes came in and
dropped anti-personnel
bombs on a row of trees
about 100 yards from
where Alex was. The Ger-
mans killed 24 men and
wounded many others.
About the third day, a
lieutenant picked out ten
of Alex’s group to help him
look after about 800 Ger-
man prisoners. This task
took place in an open field
with no cover. They were
two hours on duty, two off,
but were always there. The
only time they took their
shoes off was to change
socks.
The first week in July,
a lieutenant from the
Queen’s Own Rifles came
into camp. Some German
snipers had managed to
get in behind the lines and
were causing trouble. The
lieutenant picked Alex,
a soldier named Sinese,
and two German prison-
ers to go between them
to help act as cover. They
were told to keep one
pace apart, wait twenty
minutes until the lieuten-
ant got into position, then
go down the road. If they
made it, they were to keep
going to Brigade HQ about
three miles away. They did
draw sniper fire, but Alex
managed to keep the little
group together to make
it to Brigade HQ. As Alex
said, “This was the only
time I was ordered to do a
task like this – Thank the
Lord, as our chances for
survival weren’t great.”
Near the end of July,
Alex was posted back to
the 18th Bty. 2nd Antitank
Regiment 2nd Division
around Verrieres. He had
developed a very bad in-
fection in his right hand,
caused from some fine
shrapnel, so he reported to
the Battery M.O. expecting
to have it treated, but in-
stead was sent back to the
field hospital on August
3rd.
Two days later, Alex
boarded a hospital ship
and set sail for England
early in the morning. The
ship was torpedoed, and
by the time he made it up
to the main deck, the back
half of the ship was already
under water. Alex had the
presence of mind to pick
up a life jacket. After at-
tempting to get life rafts
off the boat, Alex noticed
a badly injured fellow who
was having trouble putting
his life jacket on. Alex took
his boots off and used his
laces and belt to secure
the man’s life jacket so it
would keep him afloat. Be-
fore the ship went under,
Alex jumped in far enough
to be out of the drag. He
never saw the man again.
From the time the hospital
ship was torpedoed and it
sank took only 20 minutes.
As it went down the Welsh
patients sang “Nearer My
God to Thee”.
Alex was in the water
half an hour before being
picked up by an American
sub chaser. A young Amer-
ican sailor helped pull
him out of the water. Alex

times after the war and
wished they could have
met. He was in the British
hospital over a week, then
was posted to Aldershot,
and from there went to
France. He was posted to
the 18th Bty. 2nd Antitank
Regiment 2nd Division at
Dunkirk. From Dunkirk
the Battery moved to Ant-
werp, Belgium, where the
2nd Division was given
the task of clearing the en-
emy from the harbor area.
On one particular occa-
sion, their Battery greatly
assisted the 4th Infantry
Brigade. The enemy had
dug in machine gun posi-
tions underneath railway
box cars loaded with coal.
The 18th Battery brought
up two 17-pounder guns
and fired directly into the
enemy position, killing 60
Germans and wounding
30 more, thus allowing the
4th Brigade to advance.
In November 1944, the
Battery arrived in Nijme-
gan, Holland and took up
a defensive position with
the 4th Canadian Infantry
Brigade along the Holland-
Germany border. They
remained there until the
big Allied drive was made
into Germany through the
Reichwald Forest in Febru-
ary 1945. Alex was in “C”
Troop. Seven enemy Pan-
ther tanks were destroyed
in two separate attacks,
with no casualties to the
Canadians.
After some consid-
erable time, the Battery
started its long campaign
through Germany, then
back again to Holland
to take part in the lib-
erating of the northern
part of Europe. They re-
turned to Germany where
things were very active on
the approach to Olden-

Alex said, “I think it’s only
fitting to mention that the
18th Battery of approxi-
mately 100 men had 18

Shortly after the war
ended, Alex was posted
to the 38th L.A.A. Bat-
tery of Winnipeg for the
homeward journey on the
Queen Elizabeth. He ar-
rived home in November
1945 and was discharged
January 10th, 1946.
Back home, Alex re-
turned to the family farm
and bought it from his
mother and stepfather
in 1948. On December
30th, 1950, he married
Verna Gibson from Was-
kada. They had three sons
and a daughter. In 1989,
Alex and Verna retired
to Minnedosa, where he
became a life member of
Legion Branch #138 and
remained a member until
his death in 2018.

great grandma Shirley
Gray Pederson, born to
Darren and Colbi Peder-
son on February 5th. He
had spent time in NICU in
Calgary hospital and was
moved back to Medicine
Hat last Friday. Grandma
and Grandpa Rod and
Barb Pederson are pretty
excited along with his little
cousin Charlotte, Aunt Ni-
cole and Uncle Dwayne
Hopkins.
We wish Eileen Brad-
ley improved health in the
cards in several weeks.
We all know she’s not well
when she has to turn down
a card game! The Early
Birds send their best wish-
es Eileen.
We’ll have plenty of
curling to watch for anoth-
er week as the Brier takes
over our television sets.
Again Manitoba has two
rinks there so we hope one
of them or both make the
final game next Sunday!
