SUBJECT: ULTRASONIC TESTING OF ROTARY SHOULDERED

CONNECTIONS

1.0 PURPOSE

1.1 To establish a standard procedure for the ultrasonic testing of rotary

shouldered connections to detect service-induced discontinuities.

2.0 APPLICATION

2.1 Unless otherwise specified by customer, this procedure is applicable to the

ultrasonic testing of rotary shouldered connections in both ferromagnetic and
nonmagnetic materials.

2.2 If the customer specifies another procedure, it shall be denoted on the

connection report.

3.0 ASSOCIATED MATERIALS

3.1 RSC Inspection Procedure,RP 7G.

4.0 GENERAL

4.1 If ultrasonic testing is to be performed in conjunction with magnetic particle

and/or liquid penetrant inspection, the order in which the tests are performed
is not important. However, the connections should be cleaned as necessary
after each inspection to remove any residue that would affect the next test.

4.2 A proper calibration standard is one made of the same or similar material
with the same or similar heat treatment as the material to be inspected.

4.3 To select the proper calibration standard, it is necessary to be reasonably

sure of the type of material to be tested. The size an type of connection must
also be known. Table 4.3 lists the range of size and type of connection
covered by each calibration standard.

4.4 Each calibration standard is a standard rotary shouldered connection with a

series of notches machined in the thread roots. The series of notches
consists of three .010” deep notches located at varying distances from
the pin end or box shoulder. There is a fourth notch, .020” deep, located in
the same thread root as the .010” notch at the maximum distance from the
pin end or box shoulder. The series of three .010” notches is used at
maximum distance is used to set system sensitivity, and the .020” notch is
used for comparison purposes.

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Prior to calibration, visually examine the plastic wedge to assure adequate
couplant between the wedge and transducer. If air bubbles are observed,
disassemble the transducer from the plastic wedge and apply sufficient
couplant to the mounting surface of the wedge. Reassemble the transducer
to the wedge, again observing that complete coupling occurs.
5.2 Activate the couplant valve and verify that couplant flows freely from the
outlets in the plastic wedge.
5.3 Calibration of the ultrasonic testing system shall be performed each time the
flaw detector is turned on, prior to performing the initial inspection, and each
time a change in calibration standard is required. Verification of calibration
against the standard shall be performed after every tenth connection
inspected and at the end of each job.
5.4 Using the proper calibration standard, obtain “peak” signal from the .010”
notch at maximum distance bu adjusting the angle of the transducer.
5.5 Set system sensitivity to obtain a 25% amplitude signal from the .010” notch
at the maximum distance.

5.6 Using the three .010” notches at varying distances, set the time varied gain
(TVG).

5.7 Return to the .010” notch at maximum distance and adjust the gain as
required to obtain a 25% amplitude signal.
5.8 Set the gate start as close as possible to the interface signal. This should be
approximately 1 ½” .
5.9 Adjust gate width to sufficiently cover the entire length of the threads to be
inspected.
5.10 Adjust gate level to approximately 5% less than the signal amplitude of the .
010” notch at Maximum distance ( refer to Paragragh 5.7).
5.11 Adjust the reject level as required to eliminate excess grass along the
baseline. Do not exceed 20% reject level.
5.12 All indications in excess of the gate threshold level shall be marked for further
investigation and disposition.
5.13 All indications marked shall be investigated with magnetic particle or
penetrant inspection, as applicable. Disposition shall be performed in
accordance with FI-012. Any ultrasonic indication that cannot be verified by
other means shall be dispositioned as follows :
A. If the signal amplitude is less than 50% of full screen height (FSH), the
disposition shall be “use as is”
B. If the signal amplitudeis equal to or greater than 50% of FSH, the
disposition shall be “reject”.
5.14 After disposition, all parts should be marked as applicable for their particular
classification. A report shall be generated detailing the inspection results.
Remaining couplant should be removed from the test surfaces.
