I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Define food chain;

d. Construct a diagram showing the feeding relationship and energy transfer of living
organisms in the ecosystem; and
e. Appraise the importance of food chain in maintaining the energy resources in the
ecosystem.

III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Students ‘Activity

A. Preliminary Activities `
a. Prayer Let’s vow our heads and feel the presence of
Let us start our day with a simple the Lord.
prayer to be led by John Lloyd
Dear Lord and Father of all.
Thank you for today.
Thank you for ways in which you provide for
us all. For your protection and love we thank
you.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds now on
what we are about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen and
write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we discover
more about the world around us.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus.
Amen.
b. Greetings
Good morning class!
Good morning sir!

How’s your day?

Great sir!

That is nice to hear!

c. Checking of attendance
Will you please bring out ¼ sheet of paper,
write your name and pass it forward.
(the students will do the activity)

This will serve as your attendance for

today.

d. Review of the Past Lesson

What was our lesson yesterday?
Yes, Aljhon
Yesterday, we tackled about the major
components of soil.

To test your mastery about our lesson

yesterday, let us have an activity.
Entitled “True or False”
I will group you into 3. This will be the
group 1, group 2, and group 3 respectively.

I will read a statement about the major

components of a soil and you are going to
determine as whether it is true or not. If
your answer is true raise the flashcard with
thumbs up sign and if false raise the
flashcard with sad symbol.
Are you ready?
Yes, sir!

(the students do the activity)

e. Motivation
Before we formally start our lesson for
today, we let us have an activity entitled
“What am I”

I will divide you into five groups. Count

off. 1,2,3,4,5

All you need to do is to answer my

questions in a group.
Write your answer in the illustration board.

Are you ready?

Yes, sir!

Questions:
1. I am a vegetarian, I only eat plants. My
name starts with letter H. What am I?
-Herbivore
2. I usually feed on left-overs, spoil foods
and dead organisms. I am not choosy I
just need to do it. My name starts with
letter D and ends with letter R. what am
I? (the students do the activity)
-Decomposer
3. I am known for being good and nice to
others, I provide food and energy to
other living organisms. My name
starts with letter P and ends with letter
T. What am I?
B. Presentation of the lesson
Based from the activity, what do you think
is our topic for today?
Yes, Mark John
It is all about food chain.

When you hear the word food chain, what

comes in your mind?
Yes, John Paul Food chain is a linear sequence through which
nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats
another.
Very good!
Any other idea?
Yes, Angela Food chain is a sequence of organisms through
which energy may move in a community.
Exactly!
What are the components of food chain?
Yes, Michael Food chain composed of producers,
consumers, and decomposers.

What are producers?

Yes, Stephano Producers are autotrophic organisms capable
of producing their own food.
Very good!
Any other idea?
Yes, Angelo Producers harness energy from the sun.

Very good!
What about consumers?
Yes, Joshua Consumers are heterotrophic organisms that
eat available food.
Precisely!
Consumers may be classified according to
their order in the food chain.
We have primary consumers, secondary
consumers, tertiary consumers and
decomposers.
What are primary consumers?
Yes, Iñiego Primary consumers are organisms which feed
on the primary producers.

Exactly!
What are the examples of primary
consumers?
Yes, Dianne Grasshoppers that feed on grasses.

Very good!
Who can give another example?
Yes, Aaron Caterpillar that feed on grasses.

Very good!
Another?
Yes, Angennete Small fishes that feed on planktons in the
Excellent! ocean.

What can you observe about the examples?

Yes, Mark Joe The organisms given are usually those that
feed directly on plants.

Precisely!
Where can we classify organisms that
Feed only on plants?
Yes, John Lloyd Herbivores

Now, we have also secondary consumers.

What are secondary consumers?
Yes, Khaycee Secondary consumers are organisms that feed
on primary consumers.
Who can give examples of secondary
consumers?
Yes, Germaine Mice that feed on grasshoppers.

Another example?
Yes, Angelo Birds that on grasshoppers

Secondary consumers are classified as

carnivores since they feed on animals.
Absolutely!
We have also tertiary consumers.
What are tertiary consumers?
Yes, Joan Tertiary consumers are organisms that feed on
the secondary consumers.
Who can give examples of tertiary
consumers?
Yes, Reymark Snakes that prey on chicken.

Very good!
In the food chain, there are also organisms
that eat both plants and animals. These are
classified as Omnivores.
Now, does the chain of feeding relationship
of organisms end? No, sir!

Why?
Yes, Reniel The energy and nutrients are not being passed
back to the producers.

Very good!
What do we call the organisms that are
responsible retrieving the nutrients from the
dead organisms and decaying matters?
Yes, Angel Decomposers or detritivores

Very good!
Decomposers feed on dead animals and
release nutrients during the process that
will be used by the plants to grow.

Any questions about the different

compositions of food chain? None, sir!

C. Application
Let us have another activity; I will group
you into three groups. Count off!

I have here diagrams showing the different

organisms of the food chain, all you need to (the students do the activity)
do is to label each organism with their
corresponding roles.

Are you ready?

D. Generalization
Again, what is a food chain?
Yes, Kyle Nowel Food chain is a linear sequence through which
nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats
another.
Very good!
What are the different components of food
chain?
Yes, John Loi
Food chain composed of producers,
consumers, and decomposers.
Excellent!
Any question about our topic for today?

IV. EVALUATION
Bring out 1 whole sheet of paper and
answer the following questions:
1. What is a sequence through which the
energy is being transferred from on
organism to another?
2. What do you call the organisms that
feed only on plants?
3. What are the organisms that feed on
both animals and plants?
4. What do you call the organisms that
feed on animals only?
5. What are the agents of decay which (the students do the activity)
decompose dead organic matter?
6-10.Construct your own food chain and
label each organism with their appropriate
role in the ecosystem.

V. ASSIGNMENT
Construct a food chain and explain briefly
how nutrients and energy pass from one
organism to another.

Before you leave kindly pick up pieces of (the students do the activity)
litters and arrange your chairs.

Good bye, class! Good bye, sir!
