INORGANIC CHEMISTRY PROBLEM SET

SET A: Periodic Table of Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

1. Which of the following has the smallest size?

A. electron B. proton C. nucleus D. neutron

2. According to the periodic table block, how many electrons does an uncharged atom of
chlorine have?

A. 17 B. 18 C. 35 D. 36

3. Which of the following are found close to the right side of the periodic table?

A. metals B.nonmetals c. lanthanides D.metalloids

4. Is the human body made of mostly metal, nonmetals, or metalloids? Why?

- Non-metals. The body is composed of 70% water, which is a non metallic compound.

5. How many naturally occurring elements are listed on the periodic table?
- There are 94 naturally occurring element listed on the periodic table

6. Are electrons more likely to be close to the nucleus or far away from the nucleus? Why?
- Electrons tend to be far from the nucleus because of the nucleus’ nature. Nucleus is
composed of protons and neutrons, which is positively charged and uncharged
respectively, and electrons have negative charges. With this, opposite charges repel
each other.

7. What are the rows and columns on the periodic table called? How are elements in the rows similar,
and how are elements in the columns similar.
- Rows in the periodic table are called Period, elements in the same period have the
same number of atomic orbitals
- Columns in the periodic table are called Group, elements in the same Group have the
same number of valence electrons

8. For each of the following compounds, predict whether you would expect it to be ionic or covalent.
(a) chromium(III) oxide, Cr2O3 - IONIC
(b) carbon tetrachloride, CCl4 - COVALENT
(c) methanol, CH3OH - COVALENT
(d) strontium fluoride, SrF2 - IONIC
9. Use the following data to propose a way of distinguishing between ionic and covalent compounds.
Compound Melting Point ( oC) Boiling Point ( oC)
Cr2O3 2266 4000
SrF2 1470 2489
CCl4 -22.9 76.6
CH3OH -97.8 64.7

a. Cr2O3 – IONIC

b. SrF2 – IONIC

c. CCl4 – COVALENT

d. CH3OH - COVALENT

10. Which of the following compounds should conduct an electric current when dissolved in water?
Why? (a) methanol, CH3OH (b) strontium fluoride, SrF2

- Strontium fluoride, since the compound is ionic and ionic compounds in aqueous solution is a
conductor or conducts electricity
