I. L'obscuritédu monde
La métaphysiqueclassique a élaboré le projet d'une mathesisuniver-
salis qui a été repriset popularisépar la science; elle croyaitdonc à une
« véritéen soi », c'est-à-direà la triplepossibilitéde coordonnertotalement
les différentsmomentsde notreexpérience,d'évacuerl'obscurité- provi-
soire,pense-t-elle - du mondeet de réaliserune intersubjectivité totale3.

Merleau-Ponty jamais cessé de contesterce projet. Dès la Phénoméno-
logie de la Perception,il estime que cet idéal repose sur ce qu'il appelle
« le préjugéde l'être déterminé»4. Selon ce préjugé,l'Être est un « objet
absolu », une pure transparence,une pure coïncidenceavec lui-même; il
ne comporteaucun néant,aucune obscurité.C'est encorele mêmepréjugé
que l'auteur dénonce dans les Résumésde Cours quand il reprocheà la
pensée cartésienned'être suspendue au doute méthodique,c'est-à-dire
à une logique du tout ou rienqui éliminea prioritoute ambiguïtéconsti-
