Leadership

- A point of polarization for group cooperation (Chapin).

- Not a science nor a discipline, but an art and as such, must be felt,
experienced and created (De Pree).

- The process of persuasion and example by which an individual (or

leadership team) induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader
or shared by the leader and his or her followers (Gardner).

- The process of empowering beliefs and teaching others to tap their full
capabilities by shifting the beliefs that have been limiting them (Robins).

- A process of moving a group or groups in some direction through mostly

non-coercive means.

- Process of influence in which the leader influences others toward goal

achievement.

o Influence. Influence is an instrumental part of leadership and

means that leaders affect others, often by inspiring enlivening, and
engaging others to participate.

o Reciprocal Relationship. The process of leadership involves the

leader and the followers in interaction. This implies that leadership
is a reciprocal relationship.

Nurses are Leaders. What this means for nurses as professionals is that
they function as leaders when they influence others toward goal
achievement.

Formal Leadership – when a person is in position of authority or in a

sanctioned, assigned role within an organization that connotes influence,
such as a clinical nurse specialist

Informal Leadership – an individual who demonstrates leadership outside

the scope of a formal leadership role or as a member of a group rather than
as the head or leader of the group
