Advent Meditation
“LET THERE BE LIGHT”
Light May Call Us to Begin A Journey

Far to the east of Bethlehem, astrologers were searching the skies for an encouraging sign. It
was their belief that, if they could discover a new star, it would signify the coming of a new and
important person. A new leader, or king, or prophet might be the source of renewal and beer
life. When such a star appeared, they moved out to seek its meaning. Expectantly, they followed
the star to Bethlehem and saw Jesus.

In our first weeks of searching for new light during the Advent season, perhaps a small new
flame has been kindled within us, a special bit of brightness and hope. If we leave it alone and
do not work to help it grow, it may soon fade away, but if we move toward it and feed the flame,
it may bring us warmth and the light we need to see our lives more clearly.

Have you felt this call to move out and find something beer for your life? We are well aware of
darkness around us, but that alone may lead only to discouragement and despair. We need to
follow the new gleam and discover both its source and its potenal. For people today, it is not
a journey over literal mountains or through a wilderness, but it may involve difficult passages.

How do we make such a journey? Surely we need to start with some orientaon. Where are
we now and where do we want to go? Have we defined our real goals in life and do we spend
our me working for them? Oen we spend our me “making a living”. Can’t we, instead, find
me for “making a life”? Our society, our families, our selves call for seng priories and going
aer them.

We need to pause in the midst of our busyness and set new direcons. Study and examine any
new light or insight that has come our way. Open-eyed and open-minded, sense new potenal.
Let the star call you out and send you on a new and wonderful journey! Let God’s light guide
you!

Witness for Justice
We Need Good News
M. Linda Jaramillo
S omemes just being thankful during such tur-
bulent mes is really hard. We just need to
look around at all the problems and pain in
the world and wonder if there is any good news at
all. I am convinced that God’s abundant blessings
are in the midst of the struggle, but I must confess
that when bad news is front and center during the
nightly broadcast, it is hard to see what good is be-
ing done in communies across the globe. All of a
sudden when we least expect, good news abounds!
Thank you to CNN for instung their An-
nual CNN Heroes Program. On Thanksgiving night
last week, they aired the "CNN Heroes: An All-Star
Tribute." This inspiring program recognizes unsung
heroes in our midst. These heroes are not celebri-
es who make millions of dollars in the entertain-
ment industry. They are not public figures with big
names who lead huge organizaons or serve in the
halls of Congress or the White House. Instead, they
are ordinary people who saw an unmet human need
and decided to do something about it. Gathering
others to help, these heroic leaders are changing
the world for millions of others. Margaret Mead
was right when she said, “Never doubt that a small
group of commied people can change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
While each hero has a disnct story to tell;
the common thread among them is that he or she
believes in the power of the human spirit. Each of
them knows that the challenges we face are huge,
but not insurmountable. Each of them knows that it
takes dedicaon and faith to stay the course. Each
of them knows that hope is alive in dire circumstanc-
es if others will step up and support the change that

is needed. As each story was told, it was clear that
good news abounds.
Anuradha Koirala was named the 2010
Hero of the Year for her relentless efforts to end hu-
man trafficking. She boldly condemns sex crimes
against children, the majority of whom are girls. De-
claring that “human trafficking is a crime, a heinous
crime, a shame to humanity,” Ms. Koirala stands up
to the powers and principalies of patriarchal sys-
tems that have connued to carry on sex slave trade
for years.
She raids brothels and patrols the India-
Nepal border in order to liberate girls who are be-
ing bought and sold. These girls are tortured, raped,
and held in slavery to profit a sick and greedy sys-
tem dependent on the destrucon of human be-
ings. Anuradha Koirala has disrupted this revolng
marketplace and helped rescue more than 12,000
women and girls since 1993. She has been instru-
mental in transforming their lives filled with fear and
despair into new hope surrounded by people who
care about them.
Ms. Koirala’s vision is to create a society
free of trafficking for the sake of our daughters. She
pleads with the world to respect our youth – the
hope of the next generaon. I admire her coura-
geous leadership and faithful commitment to restor-
ing a society that values its young people. This is
Good News!

Stewardship
The Results of A Redeemed Life

Just saying “No” to temptaon is not usually easy by itself. In resisng temptaon, we
need to say “Yes” to something beer, such as good stewardship in all areas of life.
Tempted to eat or drink too much? Say “Yes” to beer health and good nutrion. Tempt-
ed to run up credit card debt? Say “Yes” to living within your means and your budget.

If you are tempted to be selfish, say “Yes” to sharing God’s gis to you with others and
finding the joy that it brings. Tempted to be lazy? Say “Yes” to being a giver and using
your me and unique talents wisely. Tempted to pass on gossip? Say “Yes” to speaking
about others in the way you wish they would speak about you. Tempted by an “ego-
trip”? Say “Yes” to pung God first.

STEWARDSHIP
Jesus, too, was tempted. But in saying “No” to each temptaon, Jesus said, “Yes” to
something much beer.

God is a great giver. We can never out-give God. When we share what we have gener-
ously, God blesses us with priceless gis. Peace, health, happiness, sasfacon and cour-
age can never be purchased. They are the rewards of proper investments.

Trinity UCC Green Commiee proudly congratulates Reggie Carter, Ronald Linton and George
Outlaw, winners of the Healthy Cooking Compeon at the Chicago Faith Summit and Expo,
which was organized by the Consorum to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC).

The mighty Trinity Team was charged with preparing and presenng a healthy meal, to a
panel of judges, that steered away from fried foods but was sll tasty. The menu consisted of
Baked Citrus Salmon (Reggie Carter), Sweet Potato Cupcake (Ronald Linton) and Black Eyed
Peas Salad (George Outlaw). Each recipe had a twist, showing that we can eat our favorite
foods and keep it healthful.

As the 1st place winners of the compeon, the team will receive a $500.00 gi cerficate to
purchase equipment for our kitchen. Praise be to God!

In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was
God.2The same was in the beginning with
God.
February • John 1: 3
All things were made by him; and with-
out him was not any thing made that was
made.
March • John 1:4
In him was life; and the life was the light
of men.
April • John 1:5
And the light shineth in darkness; and the
darkness comprehended it not.
May • John 1: 6
There was a man sent from God, whose
name was John.
June • John 1:7
The same came for a witness, to bear wit-
ness of the Light, that all men through him
might believe.
That was the true Light, which lighteth
every man that cometh into the world.
September • John 1:10
He was in the world, and the world was
made by him, and the world knew him
not.
October • John 1:11
He came unto his own, and his own re-
ceived him not.
November • John 1:12-13
But as many as received him, to them
gave he power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on his
name: 3Which were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will
of man, but of God.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt
among us, (and we beheld his glory, the

bear witness of that Light.

May the sunlight of Jesus Christ grace your cheek,
