Masoom Annual Report 2009-2010

A summary by the CEO
Masoom began as a pilot project in 2008-2009, with a mission to make a
quantum difference to the quality of Night Schooling in Mumbai. Starting with
just two schools, Masoom successfully moved on to six schools in 2009-10
and now we are present in ten. In this, our second Annual Report, we will
take you through this heart warming journey, focusing on our achievements,
challenges and our support systems in our three key thrust areas – improv-
ing infrastructure, creating capacity and spearheading advocacy

Our dream is being fuelled by the financial support extended to us by Unltd

India and the EdelGive Foundation and, with the support of GFC, we have
additionally tasted success on an international platform. .

Masoom’s Night School programme has expanded to be associated with the Headmasters Associa-
tion the Department of Education and the Night School Organization. We have been greatly encour-
aged by the tremendous response we have received during the screening processes and have had
the privilege to receive many applications for partnership thereafter. We now have various schools
with whom we can associate and are on course to expand our reach beyond the ten schools we cur-
rently reach out to with a view to continually addressing the needs of deserving students.

We’re proud of some of our key achievements which are, in large part, due to the unwavering dedi-
cation of our committed team and our volunteers. It is our pleasure to convey our biggest success at
Masoom- The volunteering programme for Class 10 students this programme has contributed to
marked improvement in the Class 10 results . After two years of successful implementation of
Masoom’s programme in six night schools , our Partner Schools are completely convinced about the
quality of our contribution and have nominated key teachers to work with Masoom coordinators to
jointly monitor Masoom’s programme. We have set up the Career Cell and the R&D Department,
which have helped us deal with challenges like poor and irregular attendance. In the Career Cell, we
have introduced scholarships to Class 10 toppers and needy students. It is through this same cell
that students will be linked to vocational courses and providing direct employment. We at Masoom
see this as a huge pull factor for the students. Additionally, the R&D department has been instru-
mental in getting expert subject teachers to draft the minimum essential syllabus. This helps teachers
focus on important topics and helps them complete the syllabus in the most efficient way possible.
Masoom has also initiated a Nutrition Programme that provides students with a healthy meal every
day. And last, but definitely not least the Department of Education has endorsed Masoom’s pro-
gramme and requested all schools to cooperate with us, thereby greatly strengthening our efforts..

The Road Ahead

Though the attendance at the schools has been retained and has subsequently improved, it has not
increased, and this still remains one of the biggest challenges we face and we are looking to further
fine-tune our model this year. We wish to expand our operations to include more schools, improve
attendance, retain students, bolster academic performance, better student employability and boost
the enrollment of teachers. We are also looking to working on a course for Night Schools as well as
sustaining and building on our advocacy initiatives

It is with optimism that we look forward to an even better year ahead.

Masoom Annual Report 2009-2010

Masoom’s role in Night School Education

Our vision is to support youth learn while they earn.

Our mission is to enable night school students achieve their full potential through educational and
policy support.

Masoom Theory of Change: “If we provide quality educational resources that are lacking in Night
Schools then we build a strong academic foundation leading to better career opportunities for the
students.

Masoom’s Role in Night School Education

India has more children that are out of school than in any other country. Night Schools give young India an
opportunity to earn a living during the days and get an education during the evenings. It serves to improve
the literacy rate of the country, reduce the incidence of drug abuse, lower crime rates as well as provide
many with the access to a better future.

Masoom was started with a view to improve the quality of education imparted to hardworking Night School
students. It is with this goal that we continue to work towards providing deserving students with opportuni-
ties for employment and a shot at a brighter tomorrow.

The change we want to see and the change we hope to be:

• Creating a pool of resources to help sustain and improve the quality of education
• Increasing student enrollment and attendance
• Improving the academic performance of Night School children by developing capacities of the
Night School itself
• Providing students with opportunities for employment and promising career paths
• Encouraging and helping students move from unskilled to skilled jobs through the route of voca-
tional training

Infrastructure and Inputs
Masoom provides schools with educational resources that enable teachers to better demonstrate subjects
and concepts and provide students with the materials they need to learn. Infrastructural inputs cover an
array of educational resources including; access to computers, science mobile laboratories, math kits, li-
brary books, textbooks, notebooks, Braille textbooks , academic CDs and educational charts.

The Science Concept Development Project

(CDP) has been designed to conduct practical
science lessons with the help of mobile labora-
tories. Hugely popular with both students and
teachers alike, these mobile science laborato-
ries have successfully enabled practical and
interactive learning. For many, the CDP ses-
sions were their first opportunity to conduct sci-
ence experiments and witness “science in ac-
tion” in a classroom setting.

28 CDP sessions were held last year.

the Ratnanidhi Charitable Trust and has successfully
provided students with nourishment whilst they devote
themselves to studies after a full day’s work. The pro-
ject has been proven to increase student concentration
and has helped to retain the existing students in
school. In particular, the Nutrition project has been a
huge benefit for students who come directly to school
from work.

students have developed a personal interest in reading
and are very grateful to have this facility and opportu-
nity to read new books.

Capacity Building
Masoom has successfully initiated capacity building pro-
jects in night schools.

Teacher Training Workshops

In February 2010, Masoom conducted a

teacher training workshop for all teachers from
partnership schools with a view to exploring
new approaches to teaching Mathematics,
Science and English.

In November 2009, Umeed Foundation and

Masoom conducted a joint workshop which
focused on increasing teachers’ sensitivity
towards students’ needs. The workshop con-
centrated on various kinds of learning disabili-
ties and teachers learnt how to identify differ-
ent issues, how to teach slow learners and Special sessions with SSC moderators

meditation.

Workshops have proved to be great motiva-

tional tools and a thoroughly enjoyable experi-
ence for both teachers and students. Feed-
back from teachers includes requests for dis-
cussions on specific topics including financial
planning and environmental issues.

In 2009, Masoom, together with the Sujaya

Foundation, conducted classes on English
conversation at two schools and a total of 15
classes were completed. Towards the end of
the sessions, students were able to 55 counseling sessions were conducted with students

Masoom has offered support to the visually challenged at Night Schools. 20 visually challenged students
have benefited from a specialist teacher for the blind. Students have been taught how to use Braille and
how to get the best out of audio learning aids like CD players, talking watches and guidance sticks. Not sur-
prisingly, academic performance of these students has improved significantly with the inclusion of these
resources. Godrej organized an outing for visually challenged students where they took part in activities
such as rappelling, climbing and other sports. For some of the students, this was their first ever educational
active outing and the experience proved to be exciting, fulfilling and a whole lot of fun!

Masoom Annual Report 2009-2010

Capacity Building
Masoom introduced sports
related activities for children
across all 6 Partner Schools
and, as a result, all the
children were united on one
platform. The activities
enabled students to channel
their energy in the right
direction and forge new
friendships with teammates.

Masoom’s Annual Picnic was at Nishiland Water Park and an

annual educational trip to Nehru Science Centre was also
organized. The picnic brought together students and teachers
of 6 schools and proved to be a very enjoyable social outing.

“This was my first time at a picnic and I really enjoyed it very

much. I had never gone to a picnic in school, and I could go for
the picnic only because of Masoom. We all enjoyed ourselves. I
request that such kinds of picnics be arranged next year as well.”
Vinod Shyamrao Ghewade, 9th Std Maratha Night School

A total of 155 extra classes

were conducted in Math,
Science and English for all
Partner Schools. The extra
classes were conducted by
volunteers and were de-
signed to improve academic
performance of Class 10
students before they take
their SSC exams. The
classes reinforced students’
understanding of concepts
and increased their confi-
dence leading up to the
exams.

Vocational Guidance Workshop

The workshop was organized for students in order to explore various employability options post their
schooling. The Kotak Foundation Programme for Employability introduced further avenues for better career
opportunities and students were also keen to enroll in the offered vocational courses. Masoom’s Career
Cell focuses on providing vocational courses to Night School students.

Advocacy
“In February 2009, Masoom
conducted a workshop for Night
School headmasters and trus-
tees. This was the first time in
the history of Night School edu-
cation that all the stakeholders
came together to discuss how
to improve the present condition
of Night Schools in Maharashtra

Masoom meeting with Night School Head Masters Association

Masoom, along with the Night School Headmasters Association initiated a meeting with the Planning
Commission, the Department of Education and BMC officials. The meeting was productive as various
issues were highlighted and the following outcomes were reached:

The Planning Commission has directed the Department of Education to provide aid and support to Night
Schools as part of the Government Welfare Schemes. The Department of Education has agreed to work
with Masoom and Night school Headmasters’ Association to enforce quality improvement programmes in
Night Schools. Additionally, the BMC has agreed to open up their science and computer laboratories for
Night School students.

Following the Planning Commission’s joint meeting with the Department of Education and the BMC, Night
Schools featured in the Mumbai Human Development Report, 2009.

In February 2010 Masoom and the

Mumbai Education Department part-
nered to trained 60 Night School
teachers and focused on innovative
and interesting methods of teaching.

Students
Chaitali

It hasn’t always been easy. Burdened

with the responsibilities of managing an
alcoholic father, work and education,
Chaitali’s attendance at school suffered,
and her dream of becoming a Police Of-
ficer was becoming more and more un-
attainable. But Masoom stepped in with
counseling sessions and home visits and
soon Chaitali was back on track. 18-year
-old Chalitali works at a printing press
during the day and studies at Milind
Night School in the evenings to complete
her SSC. She willingly participates in
Masoom’s audiovisual exercises, sports
projects, readers club and English
classes and is well on her way to be-
coming a Police Officer.

Nilam

After working 8 hour shifts in the factory, 20-year-old Nilam was

fatigued, hungry and consequently struggled to concentrate in
class. A Class 9 student at Milind Night School, she has since
then benefited immensely from Masoom’s Nutrition Project,
which has made a huge difference to her levels of concentration
and her ability to focus. Her performance has improved dramati-
cally and she now excels in studies.

Vitthal is an 18-year-old studying in Class 8 at the Marata

Mandir Night School. He was seven when he lost his vision and
has since then struggled to cope with his handicap. He did not
know how to use Braille and it was a challenge for him to study.
Masoom’s Transformation Programme has recruited a Braille
teacher for Marata Mandir Night School and now Vithal, along
with many other blind students, has learnt to read Braille.

Masoom Annual Report 2009-2010

Students

Ashweta is 19 and a Class 10 student at Agarkar Night School. Whenever she had to take her Science
practicals, Ashaweta had to commute specifically for the same all the way to a school in Bandra resulting
in money and time spent, both of which she could not afford. Agarkar Night School did not have the requi-
site facilities and this posed a problem for her.
Masoom has now equipped Agarkar Night School with a mobile laboratory with all the necessary equip-
ment so that students like Ashaweta could conduct scientific experiments at their own school. Ashaweta
has expressed to us how delighted she is to save time and money by not having to travel to Bandra. The
Mobile Laboratory donated by Masoom has similarly been a huge boon for many students who have an
interest in Science.

Tushar
19-year-old Tushar is a Class 10 student at Milind Night
School. After consistently faring poorly in Math, Tushar had
lost confidence in his ability to pass his SSC examination.
Masoom held extra classes at Milind Night School, which
Tushar attended as a last attempt to improve his Math
score. Soon Tushar was enthusiastically attending both
Night School as well as his extra classes and he managed
to master the very concepts he previously could not grasp.
Tushar is now very confident about passing the SSC exam
with good marks. It is heart warming to learn that Tushar
now extends his help to students of Class 8 and 9 to over-
come their difficulties with Math.

Masoom Team

Nikita Ketkar, the CEO of Masoom, leads an enthusiastic team of 12 who contribute to Masoom’s everyday
activities. These members have been with the organization since its inception and have played an ex-
tremely crucial role in conducting the initial research for the organization. What makes these members ex-
ceptional is the fact that they are products of Night Schools and Night Colleges themselves, which make
them uniquely positioned to offer personal experiences, insights and a core understanding of the system in
addition to emotionally connecting with current students at Masoom’s Partner Schools.

Furthermore, there are three Education Coordinators who work with Partner Schools to administer the Night
School Transformation Programme. These coordinators are supported by an administration assistant and
an accounting assistant. A programme manager and an education officer are placed to monitor and evalu-
ate the efficiency of the field activities.

Masoom has also been fortunate to welcome on board a Resource Manager who handles Masoom’s com-
munication and fundraising.

With a diligent, motivated, ambitious and supportive team, Masoom is geared towards a tomorrow where
more and more children have a chance at a brighter future.

Buniyaad Summer Camp

“I would specifically request Masoom to organize such summer camps in the future. Students benefit a lot
from this camp. My birthday was celebrated in this camp and I will always have special memories of this
camp and Masoom. I would like Masoom to organize a similar camp for Diwali”
Gorakh Lad, 9th Std, Sahakar Night School

As part of our Night School Transformation Programme, Masoom

implemented a summer camp project – “Buniyaad” – for the stu-
dents of all our six Night Schools. The aim of Buniyaad Summer
Camp was to strengthen students’ academic understanding in a fun
-filled way.

Buniyaad Summer Camp was opened on 12th April 2010 by Su-

raba Desai, Executive Director of Sahakar Night School. The six
week camp came to an end on 23rd May 2010. In addition to aca-
demic classes, other activities such as games, career awareness,
vision building, and Sunday outings were incorporated into the ex-
perience. 35 volunteers made this camp possible and provided 107
sessions of English, Math, Science and Geography.

The planning, preparation and hard work by the Masoom team and
its associates made this camp possible. Buniyaad Summer Camp
could not have been the success it was without the help and sup-
port from Edelweiss and Credit Suisse volunteers. Masoom would
also like to thank SP Jain, Nilesh Todankar, Mangesh Naik, Rajer
Vaitah, Shirin Juinaley and Rupali for their remarkable contribu-
tions.

Vinayak Chouhan– 9th Std, Agarkar Salil Thanawala, volunteer from Edelweiss performing science
night school experiment

The Science classes followed an innovative and exciting

approach to learning and heavily encouraged student par-
ticipation. Volunteers taught complex concepts in a more
simplified manner, using practical examples. Scientific
concepts touched upon included magnetism, electromag-
netism, forces, energy sources and examining the structure
and function of a cell. The Math classes were designed to
build on basic concepts that have been taught in the class-
room. Mathematical concepts taught included addition,
subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, geometry,
profit and loss, statistics and graphs.

Buniyaad Summer Camp
Masoom believes in holistic education and therefore,
activities beyond academics were an important part
of the summer camp. They watched the movie “The
Secret” which was inspiring and motivating. Students
explored yoga exercises, dance and drama.

Educational Trip to Prince of Wales Museum

and the Gateway of India

The Math classes were designed to build on the basic concepts that have
been taught in classroom lessons. Concepts such as addition, substraction,
multiplication, division, percentages, geometry, profit and loss, statistics and
graphs were covered.

“The camp was preparation for our next year - 10th Standard, so I attended
all the lectures. I visited places I had never seen before. The teachers
taught in an interactive and joyful way. I am grateful to Masoom for helping
me and making all this possible” - Sunita

perform a traditional dance. The stu-
dents were committed to learning and
made time to practice every day for
10 days; some students even dedi-
cated the whole of Sunday to com-
plete a full day’s practice! As a result,
they performed beautifully on the last
day of summer camp to an audience
of parents, guests and other students.

“The students are enthusiastic, exuberant, active, intelligent and smart. With proper
direction and hard work, the students possess the raw materials capable of higher
achievements. I am grateful to Masoom for providing me with an opportunity to inter-
act with them.” - Prof Naren Israney, volunteer.

Future Plans
Masoom’s operational capacity continues
to expand as we focus on Research and
Development. Among other things, the
Research and Development Cell works
to fine-tune its strategic model, support the
Masoom team in facilitating the School
Transformation Programme and the exit
strategy from schools, works to help po-
tential partners replicate the Masoom
model and will also continue to develop
innovative projects to address wider aca-
demic gaps.
A Bridge Course is currently being created
with the help of Night School teachers.
Bridge Courses are academic courses
tailored to build the academic base of the
Night School students. Most of the stu-
dents who come to Night Schools are ei-
ther day school dropouts or migrants.
These students typically have a weak aca-
demic base and therefore it is important to
strengthen their academic concepts when
they enter Class 8. The Bridge Course
includes basics like alphabets, numbers
and rudimentary geographical concepts.
And while we implemented the Bridge Sustainability
Course during our summer camp, our at- Masoom is exploring ideas and methods for financial self
tempt is to prepare a written module of the sustainability and program autonomy.
Bridge Course, which we will then advise
the Department of Education to make ap-
plicable to other night schools.

Masoom aims to reach out to 9 schools by the new academic year (2010-2011). As a first step to-
wards this goal, Masoom is expanding its operational capacity.

.
Employability
Masoom’s newly established Career Cell intends
to offer students a Careers Guidance service to
ensure that they are on the right track where
achieving their dreams are concerned. To do
this, Masoom is planning to develop its Career
Development Project which will focus on helping
students find their first paid job once they have
completed studying. The intention is to develop
the ‘Career Cell’ as a project under the capacity
building division of the Night School Programme.

Advocacy
Masoom will continue to work on the advocacy strategy to facilitate a change in state policy. Over the past
year Masoom has worked closely with the Maharashtra Educational Department and representatives from
all major stakeholder groups responsible for implementing a change in Night School education. These
include the Night School Head Masters Association, trustees and teachers.

Over the coming years Masoom is looking forward to increased support, a change in awareness, and in-
creased recognition for Night School education.

Lighting up Night Schools

Even as we settle down in the comfort of our homes after a busy day, 15-year-old Sunita is
making time for her education. She too has completed a hard day’s work but instead of
winding down, she heads to school so that she can fulfill her dreams of becoming a teacher.

There are over 20,000 young people like Sunita who work as waiters, couriers and as domes-
tic help during the day and study during the night. These students attend Night Schools with
a dream in their eyes; a dream of a brighter future.

The students are self-driven, enthusiastic and committed to learning, as they know that this
is their route out of poverty.

Masoom currently works with 6 Night Schools in Mumbai and is now present in 4 more
schools in the next academic year (2010/2011) reaching out to an additional 250 students.

Help our night school students achieve their dreams by donating to Masoom. Together we
can create infrastructure conducive to learning, leading to better career opportunities and,
subsequently, a brighter future for all Night School students.

Masoom Annual Report 2009-2010

They work in the day
They study at night
They are tea stall boys
They are domestic workers
They are courier boys
They are sweepers
But they have the hope
and the determination
to someday make it right.
