Background

The English language has spread all over the world, because of its influence in many countries
and contexts. It has become an essential language in several areas like international business or
as a second language. Learning the English language as a second language encompasses to learn
different skills or subskills such as speaking, writing or listening. listening comprehension is one
of the hardest English skills because it requires an emphasis on the way that a message is being
delivered. So, it is a must for the learners to keep improving their basic language knowledge to
support them in listening activities. Therefore, different English researchers have developed
studies focused on this skill in classrooms and students' weaknesses in it.

Firstly, there is a relevant study which was titled “ Employment of strategies in the listening skill
throughout the teaching-learning process in tenth-grade students in the morning shift at Miguel
de Cervantes Institute Managua .” this research was carried out in 2016, second semester. This
this research had as main objective to analyze the application of strategies in English listening
skills. the information found on that research explained that during some observations, there
were certain weaknesses that learners had in the English listening skill. The research’s results
demonstrated that the strategies and the didactic materials applied in the English class were not
effective for the listening comprehension process. (Lopez & Sanchez , 2016,p.7)

To conclude, listening is vital not only in language learning but also in daily communication. It is obvious
to see the situation of teaching and learning English. Listening comprehension seems to be the weakest
skill and students encounter various kinds of listening problems. According to (Hamouda, 2013)
Limited English Vocabulary Lack of words was another major problem that impedes students’ listening
comprehension. This is clear in the comment of the interviewed students: vocabulary is poor; it is very
difficult to understand what the conversation is about, especially when the word that is unknown is a
key word.
