usually spend some time to watch this dance. You have probably seen images of this dance on
television. But few people know that the Kecak dance that is shown to tourist and also on television
is actually a modern form of the dance.
The Kecak originated from the scared Sanghyang dance. The Kecak was the all male choir
that used to accompany the gamelan of the Sanghyang dance. In the development of the Kecak
dance, the choir separated from the Sanghyang gamelan and started to perform on its own. Even
until now, the Kecak dance is performed using only chants, without any musical instrumenst.

In the 1930’s, a Balinese artist named I Wayan Limbak collaborated with a famous German
painter named Walter Spies created the modern form of the Kecak dance.the two artists
collaborated to combine the Kecak movements and vocals from the Sanghyang ritual with dances
from the Ramayana epic. Thus the foundation of the Kecak dance was formed: the Kecak forms a
circle, chanting and movingto illustrate the story, while a dancer dances in the middle of the circle.

The first modern Kecak dance was performed in front of thr Goa Gajah temple. I wayan
limbak was the center dancer playing the role as Kumbakarna. I Wayan Limbak did not wear a dance
costume or make up, he only wore a piece of cloth and two flowers on each ear. The Kecak choir all
wore a piece of cloth on their waist and sit bare-chested, a tradition that is still continued today.

Through the years, many Balinese choreographers have reshaped and refined the Kecak
dance into the form that is known today. Now, many Ramayana dances are performed in the Kecak
dance. the Kecak choir not only chants the traditional “cak-cak-cak” sound but also other sounds to
