The following base modules are available for the RTU540 product line:
• 540CMD01
• 540CID01
The following base modules are available for the RTU520 product line:
• 520CMD01
For each product line different extension I/O modules can be used.
2.2 Housing
DIN rail-mountable modules are available in different types:
• Stand-alone modules in a metal housing, directly mounted to a DIN rail
• Compact fixed-length housing for one 1 module
Within one DIN rail-mounted configuration, the wired OR-bus and the Serial Peripheral Bus can be
used at the same time by using an I/O adapter.
The following I/O adapter are available (see also chapter 5).
ADVICE
Do not change the physical SPB I/O bus medium (electrical, fiber optical) more than once within
one RTU I/O bus configuration. Otherwise communication failures due to signal delay effects
can occur.

5 I/O adapters
5.1 Overview
I/O adapters are needed to connect I/O modules to the WRB in DIN rail-mountable systems:
520ADD03 Connect virtual I/O racks R0001: No compact module housing together
Convert SPB to WRB R0002: Yes with 560PSD01
The I/O adapter are used for the different I/O modules according to the following table:
The I/O adapter is connected to the WRB I/O bus (wired OR bus) and generates the addresses for
the connected I/O modules within the I/O assembly automatically.
One I/O adapter is able to connect up to 8 I/O modules. The number of I/O modules is limited to
16 within one I/O rack.
ADVICE
The length of the WRB connection cable between two I/O adapters is limited to 30 cm.

The adapter is also used to extend the WRB I/O bus for decentralized I/O applications up to 2 km
distance and if distances of more than 30 cm between the I/O adapters are required.
In addition the I/O adapter 520ADD02 is used as a stand-alone module to connect RTU560 I/O
modules (e. g. 23BE40, 23BE50, 23BA40) to an RTU540. (see Fig. 8)
The I/O adapter is connected to the WRB I/O bus (wired OR bus) and generates the addresses for
the connected I/O modules within the I/O assembly automatically. The I/O adapter is always the last
adapter unit within the virtual I/O rack 1.
ADVICE
Do not change the physical SPB I/O bus medium (electrical, fiber optical) more than once within
one RTU I/O bus configuration. Otherwise communication failures due to signal delay effects
can occur.

The adapter is also used to extend the WRB I/O bus for decentralized I/O applications up to 2 km
distance and if distances of more than 30 cm between the I/O adapters are required.
In addition the I/O adapter 520ADD03 is used to connect RTU520 I/O modules to an RTU560. (see
Fig. 11)
The I/O adapter is always used together with the power supply unit 520PSD01.
The I/O adapter is the first adapter in a DIN rail-mountable I/O assembly which starts with a new
virtual rack number.
The virtual rack address is selectable via DIP switches. In addition the adapter generates automat-
ically the I/O module addresses within the I/O assembly.
ADVICE

6 System limits
Max. number of process data points per RTU (see chapter 7) 50, 250, 750, 5 0001
Max. number of subordinated devices (IEDs) per RTU Connected via serial inter- 75
faces
Limits of additional features of the RTU500 series are described in separate documents of the Func-
tional Description.
The stand-alone modules are arranged according to the rack mounting solution in so-called virtual
racks. This results in the following hardware limits:
Description Limit
Description Limit
Four different sizes for the number of data points are available:
• Systems with up to 50 data points
• Systems with up to 250 data points
• Systems with up to 750 data points
• Systems with up to 5 000 data points
ADVICE
IEC 61850 client and server can be installed on the same CMU module. The total number of data
point is than limited to 750 per RTU.
The number of data points is displayed in RTUtil500 during the creation of configuration files.
The following additional licenses are available for additional functions of the RTU500 series:
• License for Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Archives
• License for the Integrated Human Machine Interface (HMI)
• License for advanced security features (only on special request)
ADVICE
Because of technical limitations, not every communication protocols can run on all communica-
tion ports of all available communication units. For more information on the protocols running on
the different interfaces refer to the document [4] RTU500 series interfaces and protocols (1KGT
