Product lines

2 DIN rail-mounted solutions

2.1 Product lines

DIN rail modules are available in the following product lines:
• RTU540 product line: DIN rail RTU in metal housing
• RTU520 product line: DIN rail RTU in compact housing

For each product line are different base modules available

The following base modules are available for the RTU540 product line:
• 540CMD01
• 540CID01

The following base modules are available for the RTU520 product line:
• 520CMD01

For each product line different extension I/O modules can be used.

2.2 Housing
DIN rail-mountable modules are available in different types:
• Stand-alone modules in a metal housing, directly mounted to a DIN rail
• Compact fixed-length housing for one 1 module

The following figures show examples for DIN rail-mountable modules:

Serial I/O bus systems

2.3 Serial I/O bus systems

DIN rail-mountable modules are supporting different serial I/O bus systems:
• WRB: Wired OR bus
• SPB: Serial Peripheral Bus
• CVB: CVD Bus for multimeter devices (e. g. 560CVDxx, 500CVDxx)

Within one DIN rail-mounted configuration, the wired OR-bus and the Serial Peripheral Bus can be
used at the same time by using an I/O adapter.

The following I/O adapter are available (see also chapter 5).

• 520ADD02: WRB -> SPB

• 520ADD03: SPB -> WRB

The CVB bus cannot be converted to other bus systems.

ADVICE

Do not change the physical SPB I/O bus medium (electrical, fiber optical) more than once within
one RTU I/O bus configuration. Otherwise communication failures due to signal delay effects
can occur.

The following table shows the I/O bus system types of the DIN rail-mountable modules.

5.2 I/O adapter 520ADD01

The I/O adapter 520ADD01 is used to connect RTU520 I/O modules to a RTU520 or RTU540
communication module. (see Fig. 3 to Fig. 5)

The I/O adapter is connected to the WRB I/O bus (wired OR bus) and generates the addresses for
the connected I/O modules within the I/O assembly automatically.

One I/O adapter is able to connect up to 8 I/O modules. The number of I/O modules is limited to
16 within one I/O rack.

ADVICE

The length of the WRB connection cable between two I/O adapters is limited to 30 cm.

RTU500 series Remote Terminal Unit I/O adapters
I/O adapter 520ADD02

The adapter is also used to extend the WRB I/O bus for decentralized I/O applications up to 2 km
distance and if distances of more than 30 cm between the I/O adapters are required.

In addition the I/O adapter 520ADD02 is used as a stand-alone module to connect RTU560 I/O
modules (e. g. 23BE40, 23BE50, 23BA40) to an RTU540. (see Fig. 8)

The I/O adapter is connected to the WRB I/O bus (wired OR bus) and generates the addresses for
the connected I/O modules within the I/O assembly automatically. The I/O adapter is always the last
adapter unit within the virtual I/O rack 1.

ADVICE

Do not change the physical SPB I/O bus medium (electrical, fiber optical) more than once within
one RTU I/O bus configuration. Otherwise communication failures due to signal delay effects
can occur.

with RS485 or fiber optic connection in RTU520 or RTU540. (see Fig. 9 and Fig. 10)

The adapter is also used to extend the WRB I/O bus for decentralized I/O applications up to 2 km
distance and if distances of more than 30 cm between the I/O adapters are required.

In addition the I/O adapter 520ADD03 is used to connect RTU520 I/O modules to an RTU560. (see
Fig. 11)

The I/O adapter is always used together with the power supply unit 520PSD01.

The I/O adapter is the first adapter in a DIN rail-mountable I/O assembly which starts with a new
virtual rack number.

The virtual rack address is selectable via DIP switches. In addition the adapter generates automat-
ically the I/O module addresses within the I/O assembly.

ADVICE

Do not change the physical SPB I/O bus medium (electrical, fiber optical) more than once within
one RTU I/O bus configuration. Otherwise communication failures due to signal delay effects
can occur.

6 System limits

6.1 RTU540 und RTU520

The RTU500 series is a very flexible system which can be configured individually according to the
needs of the customer.

The following limits apply to RTU500 system configurations:

Description Connection Limit

Max. number of process data points per RTU (see chapter 7) 50, 250, 750, 5 0001

Max. number of WRB segments per RTU 1

Max. number of activities per RTU

2 Without IEC 61850 Client 5

With IEC 61850 Client1 3

Max. number of hosts per RTU Without IEC 61850 Server 8

With IEC 61850 Server1 5

Max. number of hosts per host communication interface 8

Max. number of subordinated devices (IEDs) per RTU Connected via serial inter- 75

Max. number of subordinated devices (IEDs) per subdevice 32

communication interface

Table 6: System limits for RTU540 and RTU520

1 Only RTU540 without IEC61850 server

2 Activities are: host or subdevice communication interfaces, HMI, PLC, Archive, local printer

Limits of additional features of the RTU500 series are described in separate documents of the Func-
tional Description.

6.2 Stand-alone modules

Stand-alone modules, such as 23Bx40 and 23BE50, have a direct connection to the SPB (see also
chapter 2.2).

The number of modules is limited depending on the following hardware limits:

• Output power of the power supply unit

• Number of modules within a virtual rack
• Number of virtual racks per system

The stand-alone modules are arranged according to the rack mounting solution in so-called virtual
racks. This results in the following hardware limits:

The I/O modules in a compact fixed-length housing (520AID01, 520BID01, 520BOD01, 520AOD01,
520PTD01) have following limits:

Description Limit

RTU500 series Remote Terminal Unit RTU500 series license model

7 RTU500 series license model

Each communication unit within a configuration needs a separate license. The licenses are arranged
according to the number of data points. If two or more licenses of different sizes are mixed within
one configuration, the number of data points is limited to the smallest license in the system.

The Basic License includes all communication protocols.

Four different sizes for the number of data points are available:
• Systems with up to 50 data points
• Systems with up to 250 data points
• Systems with up to 750 data points
• Systems with up to 5 000 data points

ADVICE

IEC 61850 client and server can be installed on the same CMU module. The total number of data
point is than limited to 750 per RTU.

The number of data points is calculated as follows:

• Data points directly connected to the RTU500 system
• Data points coming from or sent to subordinated devices
• Virtual data points of PLC and logic functions

The number of data points is displayed in RTUtil500 during the creation of configuration files.

The following additional licenses are available for additional functions of the RTU500 series:
• License for Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Archives
• License for the Integrated Human Machine Interface (HMI)
• License for advanced security features (only on special request)

The archive license includes the following archives:

• Archive for events and indications
• Archive for measured values
• Archive for integrated totals
• Archive for files received from protection devices

The advanced security license includes:

– VPN communication
– IEEE 802.1X authentication

ADVICE

Because of technical limitations, not every communication protocols can run on all communica-
tion ports of all available communication units. For more information on the protocols running on
the different interfaces refer to the document [4] RTU500 series interfaces and protocols (1KGT
150 939).
