Thank you.
I thought it would be helpful to have a thread about the doctors who really know LPR and who have been the most useful to us.
Just list the name and city and state of any doctors that you would like to recommend to others in this community. Feel free to tell us why.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:
Dr. Sataloff - Have not been to him specifically, but have seen his partner who is just as good. I believe the practice was started by Sataloff, and
just yesterday had another doctor tell me that Satalof is known for being an ENT, but thinking like a gastroenterologist (or thinks he is a
gastroenterologist). Whatever he said, that's the kind of doctor an LPR patient needs. Huge reputation. 90% of practice is laryngeal patients.
Dr. Karen Lyons (Dr. Sataloff's partner). Used to practice surgery, but now does office visits only. Wonderful, compassionate, thorough, and
gives you lots of time. Terrific doctor in every way. Knows LPR inside and out.
Dr. David Katzka (UPENN Gastroenterologist): Considered to be very conservative (does not push surgery) and is very easy to talk to. Is a
gastro, but I believe he's in charge of the UPENN Swallowing Center. Only problem is getting in to see him - if you have an immediate problem,
he's not available. The wait is typically 2-5 months for an appointment unless you keep calling daily to inquire about cancellations.
New York City:
Dr. Anthony Jahn - ENT, I thought he is pretty good - well known for working with singers and he advocates alternative therapties like
accupuncture along with PPIs for LPR. I only saw him once, but if you have United Health Care, like me, and can't get in to see any of the other
top LPR docs, he may be one of your best choices.
New Haven, CT:
Eugenia Vining - Wonderful lady who I belive was also president of the Connecticut ENT Association. She was the first to diagnose my LPR and
recommended the right medicatiion right off the bat. There's a long wait for appointments with her.
In addition, I have the following names have come up repeatedly in my search for an LPR doctor:
1. Dr. Michael Goldrich, Edison/Highland Park, NJ. Recommended by Westminster Choir College in Princeton for students with voice problems.
The only doctor I've found in central Jersey who regularaly sees LPR patients, but doesn't accept my insurance.
2. Dr. Peak Woo, NYC, Also recommended by Westminster Choir College. Listed in Top Doctors. Ran the laryngeal neuropathy study I
discussed in another thread.

I have a small hiatel hernia. Also slight reflux. Swollen esophogus at times and tightness between the shoulder blades.
I carry my stress in the stomache area. I also have axiety from some of my symptoms.
I am considering taking celexa to take the edge off my anxiety (10mg). I am very hesitant to do this b/c I hate taking drugs for anything.
BUT, if it could help I will consider it.
Anybody out there who can help?
I am really scared now. I am on 80mg of nexium a day, and still have severe stomach burning.I am also badly bloated. The GI
wants to do a 24hr pH-metry test, since I have also been diagnosed with LPR, but that is in 3 weeks time, and I have to come off nexium 5days
before that.
Under my breast where the stomach starts feels like it is on fire.
Is it possible to have so much pain even on 80mg of nexium, scared as what it is that even this high dosage doesn't make it better?
Hi All,
I have been having reflux issues for the past couple of months. For the past two weeks I have been taking Prilosec with no real improvement.
Just wondering how long I should stay on this med before I try something else? Should I have seen some improvement by now?
Thanks,
Matty
HEy guys,
so i'm a little mad right now that i wasnt told by my Dr i had this defect.I sent for my records to take with me to my appt with a swallowing
specialist in Winston Salem. So i was viewing over my Barium Swallow results & saw this...This is how it reads on the report " On the lateral
imaging in the upper esophagus, there is a small posterior defect on the barium column suggesting a mild impression of the cricopharyngeus
muscle.SO why did noone tell me of this?ALos,what does this mean.Again,i have had a feeling of something in my throat for over 6 months/
which has developed into swallowing problems. All this time i thought everything had been negative & all related to acid reflux. Does anyone know
what this means & if this can be causing this feeling in my throat & can it be fixed?I'm so worried now that i read this & my appt is not untill July
7th.Can someone answer this please. If its bad dont respond!!! I just need some relief if there is anyone out there who knows or has
this.SOmething postive would be great.God Bless all those who take the time to read this.LOL Lisa
Does anyone get backpain w their GERD? Have been having some weird things going on, like sharp pains in my back...I have
GERD and wondering if it could be that. Kinda feels the same as when I have the chest pains .
Before I begin my story, I would like to excuse myself for my bad English..
It all started one day in september 2007. I just married my long time girlfriend. We had a very nice wedding where at least 300 people came and
enjoyed our special day with us, though the wedding was costly and stressful, never-the-less I was happy and excited. Then just 2 weeks into my
marriege, while my wife was out, I cooked myself a nice canned soup and ate it while lying back on the couch and watching t.v. Afterwords my
wife came and I felt I wanted to go to sleep. As I got to my bed and was falling sleep I felt as If I couldnt breath. I immediately panicked and got
up and went downstairs. My wife, who was in the kitchen asked "whats wrong honey", in which I replied "nothing". At this moment I am thinking to
myself that I need to not freak my wife and just relax. So I sit right front of the T.V. hoping this thing will just go away. Then I felt as if I cant breath
and my hands became cold. I got up and I felt like I was fainting. I then go to the kitchen and drink water. The whole time I am feeling weard and
getting nervious like crazy. So I tell my wife "I cant breath call 911"..LOOOOOOOL(looking back at it I feel so sorry for myself but at the same
time think of my poor wife)...What she did was question me and tells me to come down.Which of coarse I told her to call "911" again. When the
ambulance came, they checked me and told me that I was fine and that I didnt need to go to the hospital. That whole night I was thought I was
dying. I went from one place of the house to the other seeking comfort. Finally, I went to sleep for little bit. Long story short, the following days
where the same scenerio as the one I just talked about, ambulance would come and tell me I am ok. After a week, we decided that we should
notify the families. Which we did. Soon after, I went to my doctor, as I came in she said that was fridigy(nervious) and examined me and right
their and then ordered tests on me, I mean all types of test, EKG, Blood test, and Barrium Swallow, which all turned out to be fine. At this point I
am thinking I am going crazy. I mean how can a guy who was so outgoing, in shape, young (27), athletic(addicted to sport and working out), all of
a sudden thinking about death. Anyways, the doctor said that I had anxiety and panic attack and so prescribed me anti-depresent medication. In
my heart I knew that wasnt the right diagnosis. So I left and took that med for about 3 weeks, in which I found out that I still was the same, even
worser. Then I went back to the doctor, but this time she was away and her subtitute informed of a possible case of ACID REFLUX. Which I
dismissed. Anyways I went back again for at least three more times, until the doc felt that she couldnt do anything for me and send me to a throat
specialist. By now its 3 months. This specialist checked me out and said I have ACID REFLUX . So now, I am believing, and immediately started
using the medication for it. After a month I got slightly better. I forgot to mention how the pain transformed over time. As I said I all of a sudden
felt I couldnt breath, afterwards I produce this LUMP on the THROAT, which was very annoying and painful. Also all these weird things were
happening to my body which I attribute to the medication, such as tigling, numbness of the hands and feet sometimes, eye movement, and
something running through my head. My over all sleeping pattern has being good, its actually my escape time. After using the medication for 3
months I go back to the doc and tell him that I am not still alright. So he requested I go take an endo(something), which came out fine. Then he
said to me that my tonsils are infected and thats the only think he can thing of besides the ACID reflux that is there. I have being taken antibiotic
medicine for a 2 weeks now ( I dont how long it takes effect, because I am not feeling that much better, though the doc said used it for 4 weeks).
This is where I am at now, 8 months later. In the process I lost my job and my wife. What is your take on this?
Need to know if anyone out there with LPR also has stomach issues?
Mine started last August with burning stomach, and I have had 3 upper endoscopies, the first one showed gastritis, and the second one erosive
duudenitis, but biopsies did not confirm gastritis, this gI wasn't prepared to do anything but to put me on nexium, so I changed GIs to get answers
but when he scoped me because I was on carafate and nexium he didn't see anything. All this time though I was suffering from increased mucus
in the throat which non of the GIs cared about.
I started having the feeling of the lum in throat wnd hoarsness of the voice, so I saw an ENT(2nd one), who is really clued on and when he
checked my Larynx and throat said I definitely have LPR, but he said since I also have the stomach burning issues my GI needs to findout what
is wrong.
Now I am at a loss, scared as what else is going to go wrong.
Just wondering if anyone out there had stomach problems like burning, and tenderness in the upper stomach area which then lead to LPR.
I am on 2 X 40mg nexiums a day, and still get the stomach burning.
