Payment may be made personally or by forwarding the necessary remittance to the above offices.

1 Towed Vessel
1.2 Ensure that current survey certificate is valid for the tow.
1.3 Check Stability Book to ensure that towed vessel as loaded has sufficient
stability.
1.8 Ventilators and vent pipes to be closed except for oil tanks.
1.9 Windows and port holes to be closed and deadlights down where applicable.
1.10 Large front facing windows such as ferries to be covered over with sheet
plywood.
1.16 White band approximately 300 high by 1000mm long to be painted near the
waterline on each side.
1.17 Main towing bridle to be made fast to two sets of bitts, stoppered to the deck
cleats and connected to a monkey face plate at the other end.
1.18 Protection to be provided against chaffing at the fairleads for the wire pendants.
1.19 Emergency towing pendant to be becketed along one side of the town.
1.24 Battery or gas operated navigation lights to be fitted with sufficient life 50% in
excess of the estimated towing time.
1.25 Towing lights and shapes to be in line with Prevention at Sea Collision
Regulations – Rule24.
1.26 Portable diesel pump with suction and discharge hoses for bilge pumping and
fire fighting.
2 Towing Vessel
2.1 Towing vessel to be suitable for towing and to have a current survey certificate
valid for the tow.
2.4 Check fuel on board and ensure sufficient for tow, plus 25% reserve.
2.5 Voyage plan, fuel consumption and capacity to be checked (note: 0.30 litres per
KW hour for main and aux engines can be used to calculate).
2.6 Engineer to familiarise himself with the pumping arrangements of the towed
vessel.
2.7 Towing vessel to be suitable for towing displacement hull deep draft with towing
winch is preferred.
2.8 If vessel is not set up for towing ensure that bollards and bitts are of sufficient
strength.
2.9 Tug to be fitted with the appropriate towing lights to Prevention at Sea Collision
Regulations – Rule24..
3.1 Required strength of towline and tug bollard pull is to be determined from the
anchor line breaking strength for vessels up to 25 metres and by the equation Pull in
Tonnes = EN + 17/16.67 for vessels over 25 metres. The EN (equipment numeral is
calculated from the formula in USL Code 13 App H).
3.2 If the bollard pull cannot be proved by a Bollard Pull Certificate, then it can be
calculated as follows:
3.2.1 For slow turning propellers (up to 300rpm) running a Kort nozzle the
bollard pull in tonnes is the kWP multiplied by 0.0192.
3.2.2 For slow turning propellers running in open water (no nozzle) the bollard
pull in tonnes is the kWP Multiplied by 0.0134.
3.2.3 For all other situations the bollard pull in tonnes is the KWP multiplied by
0.0168. (where kWP is the total propulsive power and bollard pull is in tonnes).
All components of the towline are to be checked to ensure that each connection has a
breaking strength of AT LEAST the required bollard pull.
