The present deindustrialization of the economy calls for new inputs in favor
of the dispersion of services while a responsible use of the productive factors
suggests concentration of activities as the most reasonable geographical
configuration of societies. Having in mind the sustainability of our planet,
innovative products and processes are expected to define in this context what,
how and where people will do in our next future. In order to face new trends to
welfare and wellbeing, organizations should improve knowledge related to the
use of new resources, providing new skills for human employment.
This conference provides a demonstration on the large amount of prospects
opened to organizations (private or public) when facing the challenge of
sustainability, for which a redefinition of the productive processes is required.

Mercedes Pardo Buendía
Full Professor at Carlos III University,
Madrid
Theme: Sociological Barriers and
Opportunities for Social Change toward
Innovation in Sustainable Development
Mercedes Pardo Buendía holds a PhD in
Political Science and Sociology (University
Complutense of Madrid) and a Master in
Environmental Management of Development
(CIFCA). Researcher associate at the University
of California, Berkeley (United States) and
visitor at the University of Bremen (Germany).
President of the Spanish Committee on
Global Change Research (ceiCAG), created
by the Spanish Ministry of Education and
Science and National representative of the
European Alliance of Global Change Research
Programmes.
She has written academic books and scientific
papers on Sociology of the Environment,
Climate Change, Environmental Education,
Energy, Local Agenda 21, Gender and
Environment, Sustainable Transportation,
among others. Her latest book is entitled: La
Evaluación del Impacto Social y Ambiental para
el Siglo XXI: Teorías, procesos, metodología,
published by Fundamentos.

Full Professor in Environmental
and Natural Resource Economics at
Norwegian University of Life Sciences
Theme: Environmental Costs
of Renewable Energy
Stale Navrud holds a PhD in Environmental
and Resource Economics and a M.Sc. in
Management of Natural Resources.  He was Vice-Rector at the University of Evora
He specialized in cost-benefit analysis and
economic valuation of landscape aesthetics,
ecosystem services, public health impacts from
air pollution, transportation noise, cultural
heritage, recreation, external costs of energy
and biodiversity, in Europe, Africa and Asia.
He has published extensively in this field
including three edited books, where the
latest (together with Richard Ready)
is “Environmental Value transfer: Issues and
Methods” (Springer).  themes related to European Integration and
He is a review editor on the Economics of
Adaption chapter in the next assessment
report of the IPCC. He was a visiting Fulbright
Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley
(Department of Agricultural and Resource
Economics), a visiting Research Fellow at the

António Covas
Full Professor at the University of
Algarve, Portugal
Theme: New Trends for the Rural World
António Covas holds a PhD in European
Affairs (University of Brussels).
(1994-1995) and adviser of the Minister of
Agriculture (1995-1999).
António Covas was also a visiting professor at
ISCTE (Lisbon University Institute), a visiting
professor at the IESM (Institute of High
Military Studies) and visiting professor at the
New University of Lisbon. 
Currently is professor at the University of
Algarve (Faculty of Economics).
He is the author of several academic books on
Rural and Agricultural Development.

Maria João Bebianno
Full Professor at the University of
Algarve, Portugal;
Member of the Coordinating Committee of
CIMA – Centre for Marine and Environmental
Research, University of Algarve
Theme: How can Innovation Contribute to the
Sustainability of the Coastal Areas
Maria Bebianno holds a PhD in Ecotoxicology
(University of Reading, United Kingdom) and
has more than 25 years of experience in marine
contamination and ecotoxicology. She has published
more than 100 articles and participated in several
national and international projects. She has supervised
more than 10 PhD some of which co-supervised
by scientists from other EU countries Brazil and
Tunisia, as well as, several Pos-docs most of them
from other EU countries. Several collaborative works
have been established with several universities and
research centres of the EU (Spain, France, UK, and
Finland) and non-EU countries (Brazil Cape Verde
and China). Dr Maria Bebianno currently serves at a
number of advisory committees at Portuguese and
ESF level. Her research work is being developed at
the Centre of Marine and Environmental Research
(CIMA) of the University of Algarve where she leads
the Ecotoxicology and Environmental Chemistry
Group. Dr. Maria Bebianno research focused on the
effects of organic and inorganic contaminants on
aquatic organisms in particular bivalves and fish
and biomarkers. More recently the team enrolled in
proteomic research applied to Ecotoxicology.

Waldemar Ratajczak
Full Professor at the Adam
Mickiewicz University, Poznań
Theme: The Role of Small and
Medium-Sized Towns in the Local
and Regional Economies
Waldemar Ratajczak holds a PhD in Spatial
Management and is Director of The Institute
of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial
Management, grounded in 1984 at the Adam
Mickiewicz University. He has studied in
the USA and his research is devoted to the
Renewal and Development of Cities, Towns
and Rural Areas. He has published an
extensive amount of research material.

Peter Nijkamp
Full Professor at the VU University,
Amsterdam;
President of the Netherlands
Organization for Scientific Research;
Past President of European Heads of
Research Councils
Theme: Creative Hotspots in a Triangle
Peter Nijkamp holds a PhD in Regional Economics
(Erasmus University, Rotterdam). In the past years
he has focussed his research in particular on new
quantitative methods for policy analysis, as well
as on spatial-behavioural analysis of economic
agents. He has a broad expertise in the area of
public policy, services planning, infrastructu­re
manage­ment and environmental protection. He
has been visiting professor in many universities
all over the world. According to the RePec list he
belongs to the top-30 of well-known economists
world-wide. He is past president of the European
Regional Science Association and of the Regional
Science Association International. He is also fellow
of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, and
past vice-president of this organization. From 2002
– 2009 he has served as president of the governing
board of the Netherlands Research Council (NWO).
In addition, he is past president of the European
Heads of Research Councils (EUROHORCs). He has
acted regularly as advisor to (inter)national bodies
and (local and national) governments. In 1996, he
was awarded the most prestigious scientific prize in
the Netherlands, the Spinoza award.
