PRIVATE HEALTH
INSURANCE CHANGES
Sinn Féin candidate, Sandra McLellan, said that the rushed meas-
ures introduced by Mary Harney will raise prices for those taking
out private health insurance and further the social divisions in
health care provision. It is a further step down the privatisation of
the health service at the expense of those that depend on the public
health service.
Sandra McLellan said: “The measures introduced by Mary Harney
around health insurance reinforce the government’s strategy of pri-
vatising the health service and further undermining the public
health service. They will push up the cost of private health insur-
ance by as much 20% and leave those unable to pay with a vastly
inferior health service. They will not bring benefits for patients but
are designed to increase profits for the shareholders of the insur-
ance companies.”
“The government’s flawed policies and gross mismanagement of
the health services means that more and more people have taken
out personal health insurance for themselves and their families.
Many of these people are on relatively low or moderate incomes,
do not qualify for the medical card and are concerned that if they
rely totally on the public system they will face long waiting lists
and poorer healthcare. Irish people now pay for health care through
their taxes, through PRSI and incredibly through a tax on savings
they may have in a bank. Fifty per cent of the population are also
paying a fourth tax, health insurance. Many people fall between
two stools and do not qualify for the medical card nor can they
afford private health insurance.”
“Mary Harney is driving the government’s policy towards ever
greater privatisation of our health system following the disastrous
American model. The two-tier system is both inefficient and unfair.
We should be going in a new direction – towards a fully public sys-
tem, accessible to all who need it and funded by fair, general taxa-
tion. If in government Sinn Féin will reverse this trend and move Youghal United AFC
Ardrath Park, Youghal 2nd-6th July
towards a universal system where all the people are treated accord-
ing to need not according to how much they can pay.”

THE Youghal Lifeboat was launched at 09.05 hrs on Saturday
morning, April 21st, to go to the assistance of a local fishing ves-
sel whose propellor had been fouled by a lobster pot line. The lif-
boat located the casualty in Youghal Bay at 09.10 hrs and com-
menced a tow back to Youghal ten minutes later. Sea conditions
were good with a southerly breeze, force 2-3, blowing at the time.
The lifeboat completed the tow of the fishing boat, which had one
person on boatd and secured the vessel alongside the Pier Head at
10.15hrs. The lifeboat Patricia Jennings, manned on the this
occasion by David Slattery (Helm), John Griffin Jnr and Jason
Ansbro, then returned to station.

St Raphael’s Golf Classic

ON April 30th and May 1st 2007 The Friends of St Raphael’s in
conjunction with Youghal Golf Club are holding a golf classic to
raise funds to erect a multipurpose room. The Friends of St Margaret Kelleher, Mary Daly-White, Linda O'Brien, Una Furey, Cllr.Mary
Raphael’s have operated many fundraising ventures since its found- Linehan Foley Youghal Town Council and Sharon Lupton Equality for Women
ing over thirteen years ago, mainly the annual Open Day which has
gone from strength to strength. Monies raised from these events
have gone towards providing facilities such as a conservatory, the
centre’s vehicles of which there are now three, equipment for the
day service, medical equipment and many social occasions and
comforts for the residents.
St Raphael’s provides residential, community living and day
service for 170 people with an intellectual disability. Most of the
people in the centre attend the day services either full time or on a
sessional basis where they avail of a wide range of activities and
extra accommodation. So it is with this intention that we are hold-
ing the golf classic to help provide the funds to carry out this proj-
ect.
Without the continuous support of the staff, the people of
Youghal particularly the business people, we would be unable to
organise such a large event as the two day golf classic. Special Sharon Lupton, Equality for Women with Sharon Lupton, Equality for

CARE COMES TO YOUGHAL & DISTRICT AS

NEW NURSING HOME OPENS
By Christy Parker
As a child, Peter Connon enjoyed security and stimulation ram-
bling through the family fields in Gortoe. He may even, on occa-
sion, have found solace in his mother's apron when some childhood
misadventure brought tears. Now, amongst these same fields, he
has built the Youghal & District Nursing Home, replicating for
those older or less agile, the same precious reassurances he enjoyed
as a child.
At 18, Peter left Gortroe to study nursing in London. He returns
with over 20 years experience as a Registered General Nurse
(RGN), including intensive care, plus additional studies in disease
and infection control. He and wife Angela have also managed nurs-
ing homes in Britain and Ireland.
While the exterior gardens and lawns await completion, the home's
interior reflects the very best of what Peter has learned and wit-
nessed. Light and air consume two storeys across 52 bedrooms,
kitchen, restaurant, community room church, 'reflection room' and
four sunrooms with panoramic views. There is a beauty & hair-
dressing room, providing 'head-to-toe' services. Occupational ther-
apists helped select a décor of leather armchairs and mahogany fur- Peter and Angela and children Sophia and Harry

intrude. In tastefully furnished bedrooms, beneath 10-channel flat-
screen TV monitors, stand remote control electric profiling beds
with pressure relief mattresses. Each room has a call system that
ensures a nurse will visit the room in response, with answering
times recorded, plus a private telephone with normal-rate tariffs.
An en-suite, spacious shower & toilet, completes the luxury hotel-
meets-hospital compliance.
One would emerge from one's bedroom to a world of friendly,
advanced pastoral and medical care. Peter and Angela have
amassed a retinue of physiotherapists, podiatrists (feet). Accessed
by a spacious lift, the second floor houses a clinic, while patronage
of local doctors or one's own GP will be accommodated.
Meanwhile, two chefs oversee the kitchen, where what special
needs or anything that may have escaped the varied menu, will be

can enjoyed at the home's small church, or the 'reflection room'
(easily adaptable for all persuasions) or amongst the exterior
lawns and walks.
Whatever one's choices, "this is a home to be enjoyed" stress Peter
again, "where people go to bed in happy anticipation of the follow-
ing day". Most importantly of all, Peter and Angela's enterprise
reflects an obvious love and respect for those for whom they care.
Everything else follows naturally. One might say Peter Connon is
outstanding in his own family's field.

accuracy. as Irish industry loses much to Asia, it carries strong irony.
Adapted from Japan's post-war industrial renaissance, WCM
employs techniques and principles that focus on continuous
streamlining of quality, cost, flexibility and customer service.
Setting new standards, waste is minimised and time compressed
from order to delivery. Weekends were knocked off a seven-day
week, with no loss of output or forced redundancies. "Our staff
made it work superbly. Otherwise, we would definitely have
closed", says Sam.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sheehan has deployed a further philosophy called
Six Sigma. Developed by Motorola, Six Sigma's data-driven
methods seek near perfect quality by eliminating all defects, from
manufacturing to service. A defect is defined as 'anything outside
customer specification' and Six Sigma throws up if there is more
than 3.4 per million!
Driven by such dynamics, Tytex now steers for diverse destina-

Youghal GAA stalwart Liam O'Laocha.
Formally welcoming the visitors, Mr. O'Loachdha also anticipated

The school's facilities, from "computer rooms to playing pitches,

"I hope today is a beginning of a process" he concluded.
