Census History In Pakistan And their different periods:


Definition Of Census:

A census is a survey conducted on the full set of observation objects belonging to a


given population or universe.

Context:
A census is the complete enumeration of a population or groups at a point in time with respect to
well defined characteristics: for example, population, production, traffic on particular roads. In
some connection the term is associated with the data collected rather than the extent of the
collection so that the term sample census has a distinct meaning.

History of Census In Pakistan:-


Pakistan has a long history of Census taking and the first regular Population Census in the area
now comprising Pakistan was held in 1881. Since then regular censuses have been conducted
after every ten years in the year ending at one. After independence, the first census of Pakistan
was conducted in 1951, the second in 1961 while the third census was held in 1972 instead of
1971 due to political environment in the country and war with India. The fourth census was held
in March 1981 and fifth one which was due in 1991 could be held in March, 1998 due to specific
circumstances.

Census Methodology
There are two approaches of census enumeration: (a) De-jure in which persons are counted at
their usual place of residence and (b) De-fecto in which persons are counted where they are
found on the census data. In 1998 census both the approaches were applied simultaneously
during enumeration, but the data was tabulated and published on de-jure basis for comparability
of data over time.

Census:-
 1951
After Partition of India, the population of West Pakistan was 27 million. According to 1951
census, the population of Pakistan was 75 million, with 33.7 million residing in West Pakistan
and 42 million residing in East Pakistan.Hindus constituted 12.9% of the population, which made
Pakistan the second largest Hindu country in the world - West Pakistan had 1.6% of the Hindu
population, while East Pakistan had 22.05%.
 1961
According to 1961 census, the population of Pakistan was 93 million, with 42.8 million residing
in West Pakistan and 50 million residing in East Pakistan.The literacy was 19.2%, in which East
Pakistan had a literacy rate of 21.5% and West Pakistan 16.3% literacy rate.Hindus in East
Pakistan were 18.4% while the population growth rate at that time was 2.4%.
 1971
The scheduled 1971 Census was postponed due to the political crisis of 1970 followed by the
War of 1971 and subsequent loss of East Pakistan.
 1972
According to the 1972 census, the population of Pakistan was 65.3 million. After 1972, the
Census Organization was merged into the Ministry of Interior.
 1981
According to the fourth census of Pakistan, 1981, the population of Pakistan was 83.782 million
which is expected to shoot up to 110 million by the end of 1991. Population was 100 million
 1998
According to the 1998 census, the population of Pakistan was 130,857,717. With the inclusion of
the population of Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the population was 134,714,017
in 1998. Population about 15 million in karachi Population was 130.345 million
 2017
2017 census in Pakistan is sixth census of Pakistan, after its independence in 1947. The census of
2017 started on 15 March 2017 till 25 May 2017. The census was being conducted by Pakistan
Bureau of Statistics. This census was held after a period of 19 years. Census was conducted
under security provided by Pakistan army, 200,000 security personnels at disposal. It included
91,000 Enumerators from different government sector servants. This was be first time when
Pakistan officially added a third gender to its database. Census included total of 9 languages,
with exception to regional languages that count to 70.

According to the graph the population growth increases day by day ,and this is the very hectic
situation for our country because in our country growth rate increase and their against basic
resources which is given by our government is decreasing .

Literacy Rate According to the Census In Graph:


According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO),
Pakistan at 55% has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world, and stands 160th among world
nations. Many schools and colleges are entering the teaching profession, particularly in major
cities, but those living in rural areas record a greater loss. Pakistan's literacy rate from 1952 to
2014 in percentages is shown in Fig.
In the graph shown historical literacy rates in Pakistan. In 1950, the rate was 16.40% and it was
16.30% in 1961. It increased in 1972, with a total rate of 21.70%, including urban and rural
areas. It was 26.30% in 1981, with urban areas 47.10% and rural areas 17.30%. In 1998, the total
was 43.90%, with rates of urban and rural areas of 63.08% and 33.64%. In 2004 and 2009, it was
54% and 57%, including urban and rural areas, and in 2012, it was 57%, the same as in 2014.
