OVERVIEW
Present Perfect Tense vs Simple Past Tense

Use the present perfect to talk about an indefinitive time in the past. Form the present perfect
with have or has and a past participle.

Affirmative and negative statements For regular verbs. The past participle form is
the same as the simple past form.

REMEMBER: Use the simple past tense to talk about a definitive or specific time.

Present Perfect: indefinitive time Simple past tense: definitive time. met
I`ve met Bill twice. We met in 1999 and again in 2004

Contractions

I’ve met = have met ‘s met= has met


Haven’t met= have not met Hasn’t met= has not met

The present perfect: Use and placement of yet, already, just, ever and still.

Remember: Use yet or already in questions.


Have you read the book yet? OR Have you already read the book?

Use already in affirmative statements: Place already before the main verb or at the en of the
statement.
I’ve already read the book. OR I’ve read the book already.

Use yet in negative statements. Place Yet at the end of the statement or between have and the base
form.
I haven`t read the book yet. OR I haven`t read the book.

Be careful!
Don’t use yet in affirmative statements, Don’t use already in negative statements.
DON’T SAY: yes, I’ve read the book yet./No, I haven’t already read the book.

Don’t use ever with yet or already.


DON’T SAY Have you ever read the book yet ?/Have you ever read the book already.

STILL
Use still to say an action or situation continues to the present because it has not finished.
If the verb has two parts, still goes between both the verbs:
e.g. She started her exam an hour ago and she is still answering the questions

JUST
Just used with the present perfect means 'a short time before'. Just comes between the auxiliary
verb (have/has) and the past participle.
e.g. I've just seen Susan coming out of the cinema.

EVER
Use ever in questions. Use never in negative statements and short answers. Do not
use ever in affirmative statements.
e.g.
Have you ever made sushi? Yes, I have OR yes, I’ve made sushi. NOT yes, I`ve ever made sushi.

Globalization is the phenomenon by which we are in frequent contact with different countries. For
example, we need the technology and information of advanced countries, while they need our raw
materials and our natural resources. Governments make alliances to be able to exchange these
goods.
