Youghal Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is proud to be

2008 Chamber Golf Classic
One of the most popular events in the Youghal Chamber Calendar,
the Annual Golf Classic took place over two days in Youghal Golf
1st Prize- Coleman Walsh, Gerry Russell and David Magnier with Mary Bernard
and Barbara Murray
2nd Prize- Willie Whyte, John Whyte and Jim Condon with Barbara Murray and
John Flavin
Club on Monday and Tuesday, 25th & 26th August 2008.
Now in its 11th year, the ’Classic’ provides much needed funds to
the Chamber in its efforts towards marketing the town of Youghal.
This year’s event was once again organised by Cllr. Barbara
Murray and assisted by Siobhan Sheehan from the Chamber
office, along with Mary Murphy.
Favourable weather conditions over the two days allowed in
excess of 40 teams to represent the business community of the
town. Contributions were also made in the form of a ’sponsored
T-Box’, or through the donation of prizes. Chamber Directors
either sponsored a team or were on hand to source T-Box sponsor-
ship.
Funds raised at this year’s classic went towards marketing Youghal
as a major tourist destination at the La Rochelle Boat Show in
France which was held on 20th - 25th September 2008. Cork was
chosen as ’Guest of Honour,’ at this year’s show with over 200,000
visitors passing through a pavilion space of 9,500 square feet ded-
icated to the Cork region.

This was a golden opportunity to market the Cork Region from an
economic and tourism perspective, and Youghal Chamber worked
closely alongside Cork County Council and FÆilte Ireland South
West in order to maximise exposure for Youghal. Youghal had its
own stand at the show, Oona Colin a French-speaking Youghal
native was on hand to promote and answer any queries on the area.
Youghal Chamber wishes to sincerely thank the President Mr.
John Walsh and the Captain Mr. Patsy O’Regan of Youghal Golf
Club for their huge support. As always a special word of thanks

The winners of the competition scoring a highly impressive 92
points were Jerry Russell, whose team consisted of Jerry, Colman

scoops Sportswoman of
the Month Award
A PE and Maths teacher at St. Augustines
College, Dungarvan has won The Irish
Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the
Month Award for September. Angela Walsh won
for her superb performance in this year s
women s football All Ireland finals. Angela from
Killeagh won for leading the Cork team in the
football All Ireland final where they beat
Monaghan 4 13 to 0 11. Briege Corkery was
announced joint winner for her key role in the winning camogie
team. The two athletes, who are team mates on the Cork football
team, will battle it out against previous month s winners, for the
title of Sportswoman of the Year at an awards ceremony in Dublin
on 23rd January 2009.
Briege and Angela join eight other female sport stars and monthly
winners so far this year including Chloe Magee, a 20 year old
Badminton champion from Donegal who went on to qualify for the
singles in Beijing; Nina Carberry, an accomplished jockey who
had a memorable visit to Cheltenham; Leona and Lisa Maguire,
13-year old twins from Co. Cavan whose flare for golf brought
them to the final of the Irish Close; and Siobhan Byrne, the
German-born 23 year old who became the first female Irish fencer
to compete in the Olympics in almost fifty years.
Speaking after receiving the award, Angela, who saw her Cork
team win four years in a row this year, said:
In fairness, the score didn t really reflect the game, we just got the
goals at the right time and they, of course, made all the difference.
It was a tough, physical battle, Monaghan are a good team, so it
was hard work. We haven t really had the chance to sit back and
reflect on the final, we re all back at work or college, some of us
still playing for our clubs, but in time we ll get to think about it and
enjoy the memory. It was hard work all year and we had a great
team. I accept this award on behalf of all of the girls.
Briege is a winner of the Sportswoman of the Month Award for
the third time now and rates as the fourth most successful winner
in the awards, behind Jessica Kurten s five wins and the four titles
each held by Madeline Perry and Nina Carberry.
Interestingly, Briege was also a key player in the All Ireland foot-
ball final, for which, team mate Angela secured her joint winner
title. The two week break between the camogie and football finals
was a luxury for the multi-talented athlete as the camogie and foot-
ball semi-finals were played within a mere 24 hours of each other.
Briege, who won the Sportswoman of the Year Award in 2005,
gave credit to her football team mate Angela saying, Angela is a
real role model for anyone, an all round outstanding player. You
know the ball has to get past her before going between the bars or
over the net. As a player and friend, I m delighted to see her recog-
nised and to share this month s award with her.
Cork football trainer Eamon Ryan commented on his talented
players after the football final saying, They never cease to amaze
me. Angela puts much of Cork s domination of women s football
over the past four years down to the work of Ryan stating, Before
2005 we put in all the training, had some underage success, but just
couldn t make the breakthrough at senior level - Eamon got the
best out of us and we ve had fantastic success over the last four
years. Established in 2004, the aim of the Sports Woman of the
Year awards is to recognise the abilities and achievements of
women in Irish sports. The awards run over a twelve month peri-
od, with the judges selecting a winner each month for her ability to
excel at sport. From the twelve monthly winners, the overall
Sportswoman of the Year is selected and announced.
The winner is decided by a judging panel, which is represented by
individuals from The Irish Times, RT , and the Evening Herald.

Anger Over Unbearable
Foul Mustardy Stench
Sinn FØin Councillor Martin Hallinan is demanding that Cork
Country Council act immediately rather than later to deal with the
unbearable stench coming from the amenity site in Youghal.
Martin Hallinan said: I will again be raising the issue with
Council officials and demand that they do something immediate-
ly to deal with the unbearable stench coming from the dump in
Youghal. People in the town are increasingly angry at the
appalling situation they have been forced to live through.
I had direct experience of it again a few weeks ago, when I was
in Tesco s car park downwind of the smell. It took all my effort
to stop my self from vomiting, the stink was so bad. I subsequent-
ly contacted the Environmental Protection Agency, whose repre-
sentative inspected the dump and acknowledged that the smell
was coming from there.
The smell has been described as a foul mustardy stench and is
almost unbearable for anyone who is caught downwind of it.
Despite Council official s assurances that they are working to
bring the situation to an end, it appears to be getting worse. I can
only describe the actions of Cork County Council, imposing this
on the townspeople of Youghal, as a gross dereliction of duty.
There can be no excuse for compelling people to stay indoors
with their windows closed, making it impossible to hang clothes
out and inducing nausea. Cork County Council should be
attempting to provide services which make peoples lives better
rather than unbearable.
I will now be putting it to Council officials that they should take
emergency measures to bring an end to this situation, even if it
brings forward their schedule for closure of the dump

Why Poland?
Poland is the largest of the Central European countries recently
acceded to the EU, with a population of almost 39 million, includ-
ing millions of extremely well educated personnel, and set to grow
as Poles return home to an improved economy and prospects. The
country is developing at twice the rate of Western Europe and
indeed is one of the largest EU countries. Its location right in the
centre of Europe gives it substantial advantages in terms of invest-
ment potential, such as ease of exports and communications net-
work linking East, West, North and South Europe and beyond. Its
location alone attract investment worldwide, and its status as a tar-
get for investment is confirmed by reports prepared by several of
the worlds top consultancy fIrms, e.g. Ernst & Young and AT
Kearney. Its attraction for investment is enhanced by incentives
such as EU funds, Special Economic Zones, and Business and
Technology Parks, as well the current large-scale improvements to
existing communications networks, and construction of new roads
and railways, and its legal system is favourable to establishment of
businesses by foreigners. Familiar names amongst the companies
already making Poland an important and strategic base in their
manufacturing and distribution operations include Phillips, Dell,
Gillette, McDonalds, Tesco, Lidl, Corning, Daewoo and
Microsoft.
Further illustration of Poland’s rapid development is provided by
statistics such as:
* GDP in 2007 6.6% and predicted at 5.5 in 2008, expected to rise
even further towards 2012.
* Gross average monthly pay in the 2nd quarter of 2007 was up by
8.9% on the previous year to 2,644.34 PLN (approx 830).
* Falling unemployment levels (from 17.6% to 11.1 since 2004)
with the main cities below 5%.
* Poles spent 21 bn PLN (approx 6.56 bn) on cars alone in 2007
(one third more than in 2006).
* Sales of domestic appliances increased by 25% in 2007.
Along with its location, Poland’s huge and dynamic domestic mar-
ket increases its status as a prime country for investment. Unlike
other European locations, its own citizens can now afford to pur-
chase property, and given the need for some 3,000,000 more
homes in the next few years, and the current construction of only
100,000 per year, it becomes clear that the residential real estate
market holds vast potential for the coming years. Even outstrip-
ping that sector in terms of investment return at the moment are
the commercial and office space sectors, to which many of the
world’s largest real estate investors are now directing their focus.
Visitors to Poland will find it a country of huge diversity - from its
pretty seaside resorts to large woodland complexes, lakes and
mountains, quaint small towns and large cities with their combina-
tion of proudly preserved historical quarters alongside spectacular
modem shopping centres. Perhaps the best example of the blend-
ing of traditional and modem can be found in the city to the south
of the country, and termed the cultural capital of Poland Krakow.
Irish visitors to Poland seem to forge a particular affection for
Krakow, particularly in terms of atmosphere and welcome - the
beautiful historical city of Krakow. Its points of interest for
tourists explain the millions of visitors it attracts from all over the
world - the Jewish quarter where the atmosphere reflects it perse-
cuted past, the Seminary and residence of its much loved Pope
John Paul II, its stunning cloth hall standing in the centre of the
biggest market square in Europe, and the hub of the city during the
summer. The vibrant and festive atmosphere here (helped by the
150,000 students of its Universities) surprises most first-time vis-
itors who arrive expecting something quite different and perhaps
austere, but Krakow quickly goes to the heart of many who return
to holiday there time and time again.

Local butcher Sean Twomey’s dog Chicken Supper has reached
the Cashman’s Bookmaker Irish Laurels Final in Curraheen
Park next Saturday, 18th Oct.Trained locally by John &
Margaret Kiely, reached the final with an outstanding run on
Saturday night, finishing second in a time of 28.27. Drawn in
trap 3 for the final, this fellow can go all the way with a lucky
break on the night.
It was Chicken Supper 6th race in the last 22 days, 4 at
Curraheen Park, 2 at Youghal with four of the six races on con-
secutive nights. Great credit is due to all connections to reach

YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL OCTOBER MEETING

Report of the Town Clerk on Matters Arising from the
Monthly Meeting of Youghal Town Council held on 8th
September 2008.
Dear Mayor & Members, I would like to take the opportunity this
month to discuss with you the topic of finance and the preparation
of the 2009 Budget. As you are only too aware the National
Economic Crisis is going to have an enormous impact on the
Council’s finances next year, the knock on effects of which local-
ly will be seen in the detail of our own Town Budget.
The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local
Government have already informed the council that we are
required to implement a 3% reduction in payroll costs based on the
2008 baseline figure. This effectively means that a 3% reduction
on this figure will equate to between 5% & 6%. To meet this
requirement, the range of measures to be deployed will include
curtailing or suspending staff recruitment with immediate effect,
whether for replacement or for additional staff. It is not open to the
Council to substitute non pay savings to meet the obligation to
effect this 3% reduction. The first casualty of this policy will be
the loss of the three seasonal workers (six months contract) for the
summer season of 2009, coupled with the non replacement for
whatever reasons of staff throughout 2009. This will have definite
effects on our response and planned maintenance programmes
next year.
Other expenditure areas under pressure are Public Lighting (15%
increase) and other energy related areas, Council Insurance etc.
The Public Lighting bill for 2009 is anticipated to be in the region
of 135,000 with the Council’s insurances estimated to cost
approx. 262,000 next year.
The problems however do not just stop at expenditure, our various
income streams are under serious pressure such as:
a) Falling rental income due to decreases in differential rent as
more people sign on locally.
b) Planning application fees are greatly reduced due to the lack of
development proposals.
c) Development Contributions contributed 659,000 towards the
2008 Capital Budget, this figure now stands at a much reduced
110,000 for the 2009 capital budget.
d) A 5 - 10% drop in the Local Government Fund, supplied by the
Department.
Problems such as the ones we are currently facing, demand strong
collective leadership. This always proves difficult in a local elec-
tion year, however these differences must be set aside so that we
can collectively focus on the problems associated with the current
financial problems. It is important that we continue to provide the
best service delivery that we can under the circumstances. In this
regard it must be noted and generally understood that only items
included in the 2009 Budget can be delivered in 2009. It will be
pointless raising other issues during the course of the year which
require funding because they simply cannot be delivered.
It is important locally that we rise to the challenges that face us,
that we do our utmost to protect local jobs in retail and in industry
by maintaining our charges at realistic and manageable levels.
This will not be easy but must be given every consideration.
Demanding times such as these, require brave, collective, deci-
sions for the betterment of our town and all its citizens. I look for-
ward to working with you all throughout the difficult times ahead.

Cllr. Casey offered congratulations to the Youghal Celebrates
History Committee. He said the Conference was a ’wonderful’
event with exceptional speakers, including Youghal’s David Kelly.
Cllr. Revins congratulated the Minister for Community, Rural and
Gaeltacht Affairs, Eamon Cu v for launching a new RAPID
scheme that will see the Youghal RAPID programme funded by
600,000 over the next five years. "This is great news for
Youghal," he said.
Town Foreman’s Report.
Cllr. Linehan-Foley said she had received information from resi-

dents of Sarsfield Tce. and Raheen Park expressing their concerns
at the planned widening of the road at a bend that precedes the top
of Raheen Park. The proposal will see a section of St. Raphael’s
grounds wall taken away. The Cllr. said residents fear a widening
of the road would be an invitation to boy racers. The Town Clerk
said the traffic plan includes traffic calming measures and that the
public consultation process would allow residents to submit con-
cerns. The Cllr. asked if there was any news on the installation of
yellow lines and bollards at Greencloyne. She said traffic calming
measures are needed at both Strand St. and Bayview. She conclud-
ed with expressing grave concerns about the traffic flow between
Dermot Hurley Estate and the adjacent garage. Cllr. McLellan
warned that a mooring bollard on the north side of Buttimer’s
Dock is a danger to motorists and pedestrians. She asked that the
road liners visit outside No. 38 Raheen Park for a disabled park-
ing space. She said residents from the park are asking when park-
ing spaces will be drawn. Cllr. Burke informed the Council that
residents of Shanavine want to know when the Council takes own-
ership of their estate. Cllr. Beecher asked that the decorating
stones at Blackwater Heights be ’cleared off the road’. He said he
welcomed the RAPID news and asked that some of the funds go
immediately to the Mill Rd. playground. He concluded by saying
that Wiser Bins continue to block street traffic while in operation.
Cork County Council Items
Cllr. Casey believes that a survey needs to be carried out on the
state of footpaths in Youghal. He also asked for a yellow box to put
at the exit of Pobalscoil to allow for greater traffic flow. He said a
disabled parking space is required at Gallagher’s Tce. Cllr. Murray
informed the Chamber that road repairs are badly needed on the
main street. She said tarmac is breaking at Sean Twomey’s butch-
er shop creating a problem all along the left of the street. She also
inquired about the state of the Fairfield car park footpath. She
asked the Engineer whether lining would be done at SruthÆn na
Sal . The Engineer said, ’not at the moment’. She added that resi-
dents at South Abbey would ’prefer to see realignment of the road’
to more yellow lines. Cllr. Beecher remarked that the road surface
between Market Square and Strand St. is in a ’very poor condition’.
He said a disabled pace is required at Gallagher’s Tce. Cllr. Burke
said it is now the tenth anniversary of his pursuit of a blue flag for
Redbarn. He expressed his delight that the County Manager would
furnish the Chamber with an updated report next month. He
praised the Manager for her work and warned that should Youghal
be awarded a blue flag at Redbarn ’it might be the only one we
have’. He tempered this good news with a remark that ’complaints
are still pouring in about the odour from the landfill site. He asked
for an update on the Cork Hill traffic survey but was informed
there was none. He then told the Council that he was asked to
check on the water quality for Youghal. He said the results made
for ’appalling and depressing reading’. He reported that the statis-
tics show a 50% failure rate in the amount of aluminum levels in
Youghal’s water. "This has been going on for seven years. There is
clearly a threat to public health," he said. The Town Engineer
responded by saying that there has been a ’comprehensive review’
of the water works. He said the County Council had used an expert
and are currently ’implementing his recommendations’. Cllr. Burke
retorted. "Why wasn’t this problem tackled before now. It’s just
appalling." The County Manager interjected that the County
Council report is being studied by frank Harvey. Cllr. Casey added
that Mr. Harvey is a ’top man’. "He is an outstanding water
Engineer," added the Mayor. Cllr. Savage suggested the Council
’issue a letter stating that the water is safe to drink’. A bemused
Cllr. Burke asked. "How can we say the water is safe with a 50%
failure rate?" The Town Engineer then said. "Yes, the water is
safe." He added the County Council would follow the recommen-
dations of the Senior Engineer. The discussion then shifted to the
continuing odour emissions from foxhole. Cllr. Beecher asked if it

foxhole. Cllr. Beecher asked if it was true the Environmental

expressed the view that it would adversely affect peoples’ choices
on whether to live in Youghal or not. The Cllr. then informed the
County Council that water surface at Quarry Rd. is causing a seri-
ous situation with houses on the lower level being flooded. He
again asked that the tall grass at the Railway Station be cut. He
said the grass was making residents at McCurtainstown suscepti-
ble to house breaking. Cllr. Revins asked that if money were avail-
able a ’continuous white line should be extended’ from the Golf
Links road to ColÆiste E in. Cllr. Linehan-Foley said the double
yellow lines at Greencloyne are ’not working’. She said parking at
both sides of the road is creating a ’deadly dangerous’ situation.
She cited footpath problems at Strand St., South Main St. and
Fairfield car park and requested a disabled space for 38 Raheen
Park. "They’re waiting long enough," she said. Cllr. Beecher
demanded a response to the odour emissions from Foxhole. The
County Manager said Cork County Council ’has written to the
EPA’. Cllr. Beecher said Youghal is being referred to as ’smelly old
town’. Cllr. Murray said that at the end of this month, waste will
be redirected to the site at Kinsale Rd. Roundabout.
Mayor’s Business.
The Mayor said he would like to hold a civic reception for Br
Rosn on the 24th of October to celebrate her career on the event
of her retirement.
Report by Cllr. Linehan Foley on the Tidy Towns Taskforce.
The Cllr. gave a comprehensive report stating that the taskforce
was working ’very well together’ and said it was made up of
Council members, Tidy Towns members and Chamber members.
She said the taskforce had agreed on a number of issues. It was
agreed that Youth Reach artwork would go on public display with
Catherine St. car park one possible site. The Railway Station was
sited as a target for clean up as was Kilcoran and the
Greencloyne/Stonebridge area. The Cllr. asked advice on the sug-
gestion that two F`S workers carry out this work at Greencloyne.
The Town Clerk said the Council requires a ’written proposal’. She
added that town planting was in full swing and that Transition Year
students were now involved with a litter awareness programme to
be run through all local schools. She informed the Council that
Tidy Towns provide planting pots that businesses then buy at a
reduced rate. Not all businesses have yet paid up and the taskforce
intends on publishing those who have in the Youghal News. She
said has been ’promoted back up the litter league with an increase
of 10 points, advicing that May and June are the peak times for
having the town in its best condition. She added that derelict build-
ings are a concern to the taskforce but reiterated the Council’s
commitment to dealing with the problem. Cllr. Murray said it was
worth noting that cigarette butts are the worst form of litter and
that some people don’t see cigarette butts as litter.
Community based CCTV system for Youghal Town.
The Town Clerk said that the steering committee had been suc-
cessful in securing stage one of the funding programme and have
’engaged consultants’ for stage two. Cllrs. looked at maps of the
town where cameras would be installed. The Town Clerk said live
video would be streamed to Council offices and the Garda Station.
He said questions on the location of cameras would ’come in stage
two’.
Establishment and Operation of Joint Policing Committees in
all Local Authority Areas.
It was agreed that the JPC, which will include all nine members of
the Council, would benefit the fight against anti-social behaviour
and other issues that the JPC could discuss together. The Town
Clerk said the meetings would be quarterly and that the JPC would
be made up of Cllrs., Garda , members of the Oireachtas and the
public.
Youghal Main Drainage Scheme.
The Town Clerk again advised members to lobby political party
members to secure funds for the scheme. It had previously been
suggested that a delegation go to Dublin. However, Cllr. Burke
said the Minister could yet be visiting Youghal in relation to her-
itage, thereby, saving the Council a trip to the capital.
Youghal Public Realm Plan (already circulated).
The Mayor suggested that the Public realm Plan requires a special
meeting. This was agreed with Cllr. Burke suggesting it be com-
bined with another meeting, such as the pre-budget meeting.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Burke seconded by Cllr. Casey:
"That this Council calls on the Department of the Marine to pro-
vide further funding for the refurbishment of the Sea Wall and
Promenade at the Front Strand, Youghal".
Speaking on this motion, Cllr. Burke said the sea wall has passed
its life expectancy and is ’liable to severe storm damage’. He added
the wall protects ’a public car park, public road and beautiful
Victorian villas which are protected structures. He said the work
of 2004/5 ’needs to be continued on an annual basis’ stretching out
to Claycastle with ’complete renewal as soon as possible’. Cllr.
Casey seconded the motion, stating. "We need this as soon as pos-
sible." However, Cllr. Murray, a member of coastal management,
painted a depressing outlook when she said Youghal is the number
one priority in a list of twenty, but there isn’t any money.
Motion in the name of Cllr. McLellan seconded by Cllr.
Hennessy.
"That Youghal Town Council together with Cork County Council
as a matter of urgency erect pedestrian awareness signs in Youghal
where there are no footpaths". Cllr. McLellan said this motion was
’self explanatory’. All agreed with the motion.
Correspondence.
During correspondence Cllr. Linehan-Foley said she was happy to
say that a request to have a new sign for the Adoration Chapel door
was being looked after by the Council. Also, a film about the
Kathleen and May by Brendan Aherne will get a private viewing
by Council members. The Mayor suggested Nealon’s quay as a
possible location for the film’s public broadcast.
ANGER OVER UNBEARABLE
"FOUL MUSTARDY STENCH"
Sinn Fein Councillor Martin Hallinan is demanding that Cork
Country Council act immediately rather than later to deal with the
unbearable stench coming from the amenity site in Youghal.
Martin Hallinan said: "I will again be raising the issue with Council
officials and demand that they do something immediately to deal
with the unbearable stench coming from the dump in Youghal.
People in the town are increasingly angry at the appalling situation
they have been forced to live through." "I had direct experience of it
again a few weeks ago, when I was in Tesco’s car park downwind of
the smell. It took all my effort to stop my self from vomiting, the
stink was so bad. I subsequently contacted the Environmental
Protection Agency, whose representative inspected the dump and
acknowledged that the smell was coming from there." "The smell
has been described as a foul mustardy stench and is almost unbear-
able for anyone who is caught downwind of it. Despite Council offi-
cial’s assurances that they are working to bring the situation to an
end, it appears to be getting worse. I can only describe the actions of
Cork County Council, imposing this on the townspeople of Youghal,
as a gross dereliction of duty." "There can be no excuse for com-
pelling people to stay indoors with their windows closed, making it
impossible to hang clothes out and inducing nausea. Cork County
Council should be attempting to provide services which make peo-
ples lives better rather than unbearable." "I will now be putting it to
Council officials that they should take emergency measures to bring
an end to this situation, even if it brings forward their schedule for
closure of the dump"

to tennis, it quickly caught on.
Because racquetball could be played in existing handball courts,
the game easily spread throughout existing Handball Clubs. The
court is clearly defined by a series of red lines indicating service
and reception areas, the standard rules of inbound and outbound
don’t apply in a racquetball court. For starters, there are no out-of-
bounds areas in the court: the walls, floor, and ceiling are accept-
able bouncing areas. The 40 x 20 foot (about 6 x 12 meters) room
has a service box and a receiving line, which the players must
respect during serve, but there are no other restrictions once the
serve has been made.
The rules of racquetball are pretty straightforward. As long as the
ball hits the front wall without bouncing on the floor, the serve is
valid. The ball is allowed to bounce an unlimited number of times
on any walls and on the ceiling before touching the front wall, as
long as it never reaches the ground. A point can only be scored by
the server, either because the ball is not returned by the opposite
player or because the ball bounces on the floor before reaching the
front wall. Points can also be scored if the ball hits a player, or if
a player switches hands during a rally or touches the ball with his
or her body.
Racquetball is usually played by two players, though some varia-
tions include up to four. Players can choose to make offensive or
defensive shots, which are defined by the height and speed at
which the ball is struck against the wall. Offensive shots aim for
the low corner, making it difficult for the opposite player to reach
the ball before it hits the ground. Defensive shots are aimed pri-
marily to the ceiling, based on the idea that this will make the ball
bounce deep into the court, usually traveling over the player.

Sympathy
This week we sadly record the death of Paddy Savage Park
Youghal, Paddy’s death occurred peacefully on Monday
September 29th at the Mercy Hospital Cork where he had been a
patient for just a short time. Dearly loved father of Nora Daly
Kinsalebeg, Paddy will be deeply missed by Nora and her siblings
Eileen, Mary Breda, Patrick, Teresa, Philip, John, Peter, Thomas,
Margaret and Monica, all his grandchildren, great grand child his
sister Peggy his sisters in law nephews nieces relatives and a wide
circle of relatives and friends. To all of you we tender our deepest
and heart felt sympathy.
Reposing at Egan’s Funeral home Youghal Paddy’s removal took
place on the Wednesday evening to St Patrick’s Church Inn and
following requiem mass on Thursday Paddy was laid to rest in the
adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace.

Clashmore who is presently a patient in Waterford Regional

Clashmore - Kinsalebeg Ladies Football Internal Blitz
All our under 8 and under 10 players enjoyed last Friday evenings
Internal Blitz at home on the pitch and we were able to field four
teams from the 30 or so players present. Well played all it was a
wonderful evenings sport thanks to every one of you for coming
along.
Training; This Friday night it’s training as usual for our under 8’s
and under 10’s in the pitch at 6.30pm.
Blitz; On Friday evening October 17th our sporting year comes to
an end for all our under age players and to conclude we will have
another Blitz - again we hope you all come along and join in the
fun

Last Monday night on eight games each we had Edmond and
Edmond Og Ledingham, Mike Hunt and Martin Lynch sharing the
top two prizes. In third place we had the O Mahony Brothers
Declan and Anto. We had four pairs of players sharing the best of
the last five prizes Liam Curran and Thomas Power Michael and

Sympathy
Our deepest sympathy is extended to Breda [nee Morrissey
Grange] and her sons Anthony, Shay and Eoin on the death of
dearly loved husband and father Tony Reddy Cappagh. Tony’s
death occurred unexpectedly on Friday October 3rd, may he rest

The ladies continued to dominate the weekly winner list at the Ole

Knockanore Ploughing Match
The wonderful nostalgic sounds and smells of vintage tractors at
work filled the warm afternoon air in Knockanore on Saturday
September 20th. As once again this year weather conditions were
ideal for the annual ploughing match held on the lands of the O
Neill Family [by very kind permission]. Back at the tea tent the
ladies were busy providing the refreshments for all who cared to

Positive Age Week
To celebrate Positive aging week the folks down at the Kinsalebeg
"Thursday Club" held a tea dance in the hall with music by the
ever popular Pat Tobin. For three hours the dance floor was crowd-
ed, Twists Tangos waltzes and the siege of Ennis were hammered
out. Our own members were also in fine voice on the day and treat-
ed us to some lovely melodies. Refreshments and prizes were in
abundance and everyone went home happy, humming a tune and
looking forward to a repeat performance. To Pat and all who made
it a great evening - many thanks. Positive aging is alive and kick-
ing! In the Kinsalebeg Thursday Club
Centre Youghal, was the superb and scenic setting for the hosting
by Youghal Celebrates History Committee, of its sixth annual
History Conference, the theme for 2008 which was European
Ports in the 18th and 19th century.
The Conference was officially opened by Prof. Gerry Wrixon, the
immediate past President of University College Cork. The Mayor
of Youghal, Councillor Oliver Casey, was also in attendance and
was very impressed with the calibre of the speakers and the week-
end in general. Among the academic institutions represented at
this years conference were speakers from University College
Cork, University College Dublin, and Queens University Belfast.
Conference Delegates were treated to excellent lectures delivered
by eminent speakers who explored the role of the ports and their
importance within an Atlantic European context as viewed
through their own areas of interest and expertise . As has become
the norm at this event, which is now a must on the social calendar
of those interested in receiving insights into the diverse aspects of
our History, those who attended were generous in their praise for
the high quality of the Conference which has now earned a repu-
tation for excellence.
The Chairperson Marian O’Halloran and Conference Director Dr.
Dagmar O’Riain-Raedel U.C.C. were delighted with the weekend
and would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for
2008, namely, Tesco Ireland who have supported us generously
through the years, Youghal Town Council for their continuing and
invaluable support, Cork County Council and finally, the Port of
Cork. Marian also wants to thank all those who supported us with

Limited edition pink shopping bags go on sale
for the month of October
Who needs a designer shopping bag when you can support Action
Breast Cancer (ABC), a programme of the Irish Cancer Society,
by picking up a fabulous limited edition, pink shopping bag at
SuperValu, throughout the month of October for just 3.
Brookes SuperValu has teamed up again with Action Breast
Cancer (ABC) to produce pink, long-life bags that will be sold in
the 192 SuperValu Stores nationwide to raise funds for ABC.
The exclusive, pink ABC bags will be the only long-life bags on
sale in SuperValu during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in
October. With 1.75 from every bag sold going directly to ABC,
SuperValu aims to raise close to 100,000 this year, having raised
a staggering 75,000 from this initiative in 2007. All monies
raised will be channelled into ABC breast awareness initiatives
and the development of services for women with breast cancer.
According to Donal Horgan, Managing Director SuperValu,
SuperValu is delighted to be in a position to support and make a
contribution to such an important programme. "Our aim and that
of our retail partners is to enable SuperValu retailers to impact
positively on the lives of those in their local community, through
supporting the work carried out by Action Breast Cancer. The

for us to continuously deliver the breast awareness message to as

pink bag for life will be a five-point breast awareness code which
will encourage women of all ages to get to know their breasts and
how what is normal and what changes to look out for. We are con-
fident that the awareness created by this SuperValu campaign will
complement and boost ABC’s work enormously."
The latest data from the National Cancer Registry shows that
2,379 new cases of breast cancer (2,352 cases in females and 27
new cases in males) were diagnosed in 2005. Women living in the
Ireland have a 1 in 11 chance of developing breast cancer.

THE EMER CASEY
FOUNDATION
The Official handing over
of funds
On June 10th 2008, a cheque for 160,000, the result of the first
year’s fund-raising activities, was officially handed over to Prof.
John O’Leary in Trinity College, Dublin. The event was hosted by
the Dean of Medicine, Prof. Colm O’Morain and in attendance
were prof. John O’Leary( Head of Department of Histopathology,
Trinity College Dublin and Director of Pathology, The Coombe
women’s hospital, Dublin), various members of The DISCOVARY
Consortium, members of the Casey family and extended family,
Ms Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain (former rose of Tralee), and Emer’s
former colleagues from Matheson Ormsby Prentice solicitors,
Dublin.
The 160,000 raised was handed over to the DISCOVARY
research consortium. This research group is composed of
researchers from several Irish institutions whose aim is to develop
a test for the early detection of ovarian and uterine cancer. The
team is broad-based and is composed of gynaecologists, oncolo-
gists, pathologists, molecular biologists and pharmacologists. The
consortium has also established substantial research links with
world-leading researchers in the USA.
The Emer Casey Foundation has agreed to fully fund two post-
graduate researchers on a full-time basis for three years. The
160,000 raised will cover all research expenses for the first year.
The research posts were advertised during the summer and in
excess of 120 applications were received. Interviews took place in
St. James’ hospital, Dublin on October 3rd and the two successful
candidates have been appointed and will begin research into ovar-
ian cancer on November 1st. These researchers will focus their
research on two specific areas of ovarian cancer, number (1):
Protein signatures in early and recurrent ovarian cancer and num-
ber (2): Developing novel therapeutic approaches in cisplatin
resistant ovarian cancer patients.
The Emer Casey Foundation would like to thank very sincerely
the community of Youghal and surrounding areas for their extreme
generosity, kindness and goodwill without which this good work
would not be possible. We would also like to assure all donators
and fund-raisers that ALL money raised goes directly to the DIS-
COVARY research consortium. The third Emer Casey memorial
10k will be held next May.

Bridge Foundation: I was lucky enough to meet an Indian lady,

Laeticia before I left Ireland. She was returning to Calcutta for the
summer and introduced me to her charity. Bridge Foundation.
Laeticia set up Bridge Foundation which enables underprivileged
and vulnerable children to overcome their obstacles and have a
better life. Right now they work with children in and around the
slums of Calcutta. They work in after-schools centres giving extra
help to children who do not have the basics at home (light, tables,
chairs, pencils etc.). They also provide these children with school
uniforms, cover their medical expenses, provide rice and vegeta-
bles to their families and pay for their education. I found this char-
ity inspiring, the work they are doing in such basic conditions
makes you realise how lucky we are and how much we take our
education for granted here in Ireland.

Charisma House: In March 2006, this school for street children
opened in the Bandarpati "monkey place" area of Calcutta. The
kids in this area are made beg, steal, sing, dance, sell coal and
chewing gum for money. The aim of the school is to get the kids
off the streets and into education. By going to school the kids are
also given clothes, books and one meal a day, their only assurance
of being fed. An Irish volunteer called Mickey last January found
hurleys in the basement of the Christian Brothers School in
Calcutta and decided to bring the boys in this school playing sport
at the weekends as a way of further preventing them from stealing,
begging and getting on the wrong side of the law. Mickey went
back to Ireland for the summer and I took over the hurling. Every
Saturday I’d round up three or four volunteers and we would bring
approx. 12 kids each in a taxi to the park in Calcutta. Here we’d
play hurling and soccer for about 2 hours, and on return to the
school the boys would get a meal of rice, meat and veg.
Unfortunately because of the demand for places in the school and
the need for sponsorhip, not all the children we brought hurling on
Saturdays got to go to school. With some of the money donated to
me before I left Ireland I am now sponsoring two boys to go to this
school, Wahid 13yrs old, and Karman 10 yrs old. Its costs 100 a
yr to sponsor a child in this school.

A.G.M.
The most important event in our Club’s year, takes place on
Thursday the 9th of October, when we hold our A.G.M. It gives
each member a chance to voice their views on the running of the
Club over the last year. Over the last few years the attendance has
being poor, resulting with the same few people having to do the
same jobs year after year. For the club to move forward over the
next few years, we need as many members as possible to take
active roles in the running of our Club. The A.G.M. will take place
at Tides Restaurant Youghal and begins at 8p.m.
As this is my last report as Club Pro. I would like to thank every-

With a successful 2008 cycling season drawing to a close the club
is looking forward to next year and has four official tours pencilled
in to the national cycling calendar. These tours will take place over
the summer months of May, July, August and September. Looking
forwards the club is actively encouraging new members to join
either as active cyclists, or as volunteers to give a hand at club
events.

BOWLING CLUB
The Autumn League has reached the penultimate stage, with five
of the seven rounds completed. Three share the lead on thirteen
points each.
The teams are Nos. 3, 6 and 8 and they are skippered by :-
John Fitzgerald, Michael Shields and Lilly Bulman.
The two final rounds are scheduled for Tuesday 14th and Tuesday
21st October. We can look forward to a close contest before the
ultimate winning team is known.

Cork As Cork Ladies Capture

Another trip to Croke Park, another All Ireland Final and yet
another win. By any standards the story of the Cork ladies football
team is sensational. From a period in years gone by when the
county was out there looking in, Cork have now turned into the
team that nobody can beat. A dramatic rise to sporting stardom has
set the script already searching for new superlatives to describe the
all round talents of this superb football outfit.
The obvious joy which the latest history making 4 in a row tri-
umph has brought to the ladies game in East Cork was there for all
to see when Angela Walsh led the victorious team on their home-
ward journey eventually concluding in Killeagh and Inch. This is
a very special team with a very special captain and a very special
set of players from the eastern part of the county.
It’s now wonder that bonfires blazed well into the night as the All
Ireland champions celebrated with family members, friends and a
large band of supporters before setting their minds on a return to
action with the hasty arrival of the domestic club championship on
the fixtures calendar.
The victory trail which began in Dublin early in the afternoon, had
stop off points in Mitchelstown, Fermoy and Watergrashill before
arriving at the traditional welcoming point at Cork’s Grand Parade.
However, followers of the team from this side of the county had in
the main stayed at home, instead preferring to begin the fireworks
as they team began their journey east.
In Killeagh and Inch the warmest greetings of all awaited. The
final assembly point at Inch Community Hall saw locals flock to
extend their congratulations to Angela Walsh, Anne Marie Walsh,
Mary O’Connor, Annie Walsh, Amy O’Shea and Ciara Walsh.
Nobody was in any doubt about the rich contribution that this
group of palyers had made to their club Inch Rovers and to the
county cause.
Parents and family members were understandably especially
proud of what had evolved in Croke Park just the day previous, the
climax to a marathon season of commitment. Amongst the ladies
was also a very special local man who has been the driving force
behind Inch Rovers for many years. Noel O’Connor was also a
selector on with the victorious county team and made a massive
impact on the team’s ultimate triumph.
After the formalities of the ’welcome home’ speeches were com-
plete it was time to chat, eat and drink. The local community hall
in Inch has hosted several great social occasions through the cor-
ridors of time and this one was right up there with the best.
Although it was hasty return to action for the local stars due to
immediate club games, many of the squad did ensure the that the
traditional school visit ritual was followed by All Ireland winning
team. Understandably there was an outpouring of joy when the
Brendan Martin Cup was hoisted high by the local ladies who have
now become national names.
Congrats again - Angela, Amy, Mary Annie, Ciara and Ann Marie
- and of course Noel.
Here’s to the 5 in a row!.

A meeting of the above was held in Killeagh Hall on Thursday 3rd

speak to the meeting regarding the proposed purchase of two
defibrillators and the organising of training courses for volunteers
in our Parish. He advised the meeting on the implications of same
and it was agreed that two defibrillators would be purchased and
training courses organised. An appeal was launched for volun-
teers with most of those present at the meeting putting their name
forward. This training course is open to all members of our parish
and as a large number of volunteers would be required to make
effective use of the defibrillators in our area we would appeal to
people to consider assisting with this endeavour. If you are inter-
ested please contact any member of the Community Council or
text 086-2324844 with your details.
Community Care: The meeting was alerted to the fact that the per-

has one of these alarms please ensure that they are checked on a
fortnightly basis. Any problems can be notified to any communi-

County Council: Cork County Council had been contacted
regarding a number of issues raised at the September meeting
including the upgrade of the water scheme, the state of roads with-
in our parish, flooding at Cork Road Corner and other matters. No
reply had been forthcoming at the date of the October meeting. It
was agreed that the Council would again be lobbied in connection
with these problems and any new matters brought to the attention
of the committee which included installation of public lighting at
Ard na Greine and other matters. Hopefully answers would be

NRA - No progress was reported on the proposed traffic calming
measures, footpaths etc for Killeagh village. No communication
had been received from the NRA in relation to same.
Parking: The issued of parking at Cork Road corner and on dou-
ble yellow lines outside our local national school were raised.
Illegal parking in these areas is causing a traffic hazard and endan-
gering lives in our village and in particular the lives of our children
and lollipop lady at the school. Please park carefully and think of
the safety of others when you park in Killeagh village.
The possibility of setting up a community group for young moth-
ers in Inch was discussed and it was agreed that some research
would be done on same and reported back on at the November
meeting in Inch which will be held in Inch hall on Thursday
November 6th @ the new winter time of 8 p.m.

Youghal Credit Union ATM Element Clothing Is In Top
Youghal Credit Union are proud to announce the launch of the 100 Shops In Ireland
latest new service for members. A new ATM or " hole in the wall"
was officially opened by the town Mayor Mr. Oliver Casey on
Saturday October 4th. The new service will allow members access
to their account seven days a week at any time. The service was
introduced after a recent member survey whereby members asked
that such a service be introduced. Many members surveyed want-
ed instant access to their funds without queuing during office
hours. The chairperson of Youghal Credit Union , Peter O’ Donnell
, said that the ATM service coupled with our new website offers
members the most up to date services available.
A number of cards have already been issued as the new service
was been tested. The service is now up and running and has proved
very successful. Members simply have to call in to any of our
offices to apply for an ATM card. You will be required to open a
specific ATM account which will be the only account you can
make card withdrawals from. We will order the card and the PIN
for you, and when you receive your PIN in the post, just call in to
the Main Office with current Photo ID and collect your card.
Youghal Credit Union currently has assets of 83 million. The
members of the co operative have savings of 73 million and loans
outstanding of 41 million. The launch of the ATM corresponds
with the tenth anniversary of the move to the present premises. The
annual general emmting of Youghal Credit Union Ltd. takes place
on November 25th. in the Walter Raleigh Hotel.

AILBRIN SOCIETY YOUGHAL
The ailbrin Society opened their 2008/2009 season with a fascinat-
ing talk by Michael Murray on the history of the Ailbrin society in
Youghal. The October session will be well known Youghal arche-
ologist, Margaret Gowan talking about -"Youghal, the Walled
Town". This will be held on Wednesday, 15th October at 8.30 pm
in the Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal. All welcome. Admission 5,
members free.

STANTON CALLS FOR
PROGRESS ON YOUGHAL
DECENTRALISATION
Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has called on the
Government to progress decentralisation to Youghal. Under,
the Government decentralisation programme, 200 Department of
Finance jobs,100 respectively in the Public Appointments Service
(PAS) and Valuation Office were due to be moved to Youghal.
"Due to the high level of interest in decentralisation to Youghal,
in comparison to other locations, the Public Appointments
Service (PAS) indicated earlier in the year that it would locate an
advance party of 10 staff to Youghal. Full decentralisation at that
point was awaiting finalisation of a contract for a site in Youghal
with the move of the PAS staff due to be completed by the 3rd
quarter of 2009.
"Unfortunately, it now appears that the information I received
from the Minister for Finance in June is no longer correct. I was
advised last week, in response to a Dail question on the matter,
that no further progress is to be made in decentralisation to
Youghal at present.
Deputy Stanton noted that on 8th July the Government decided to
halt any further expenditure on the decentralisation programme in
particular, in relation to accommodation costs for decentralised
offices. No further decisions will be made until a review of
the Decentralisation Implementation Group (DIG) and
Implementation Group of Secretaries General reports has been
completed by Government.
"I an very disappointed to hear that not only are no advance party
of PAS staff to be sent to Youghal, but that with a contract for
a site close to finalisation, that the entire Youghal decentral-
isation programme has been put on hold. Moving such a large
number of jobs to the area would have been very beneficial for the
town.
"I cannot imagine, given the current poor financial climate with
the Government facing rising exchequer debt, rising unemploy-
ment and lower than expected tax receipts, that decentralisation is
going to get the go ahead in the near future.

It was the lack of being able to finish off good moves that cost
united this game and if they were able to do so they would have
won the game easily. The game was played in not the best of
weather conditions with the first half producing very little but for
a few chances from united. The foggy conditions cleared in the
second half but still the pattern of the game did not and united
found themselves a goal down early in that half when a rare attack
by collage resulted in what looked like a goal which was offside.
United tried to get back into the game but the end product to their
moves was not good enough and collage held out for the win.

Youghal United 5 - Temple United 0.
On a wet and dreary night at Ardrath Park this match passed a
pitch inspection at 4.30pm to see Youghal win comprehensively.
The first half saw much of a scrappy affair with both sides creat-
ing very little. The highlight of the half was when Mossie Clohesy
broke down the left wing and took on the full back to pull the ball
back along the square and found Brendan o’ Sullivan who’s effort
was saved by the keeper. Although the first half ended 0-0 the
home side shaded it effort wise.
The second half was a totally different story as Youghal went on
the rampage. The half was only minutes old when Sean Kenneally
struck the opener from a corner kick in the form of a header. Soon
after Mossie Clohesy scored a cracker when he struck from the
left hand corner edge of the box , Mossie looked up and spotted
the keeper off his line and looped the ball into the top right hand
corner of the goal. The boys were well on top at this stage as
Temple had very little in response. Paul Moylan made it three after
some good combination play between himself and Darren
Hennessey to coolly chip over the out coming keeper. Brendan o’
Sullivan grabbed a brace towards the end in similar fashion,
Brendan took on the full back down the right and picked his spot
on both occasions - you have to say against stiffer opposition it
would not be that easy.
It’s difficult to say this was a good performance as the opposition
were not up to much but at the end of the day Youghal still had to
score to collect all three points which they did in abundance.

U16 Girls Result
Youghal United 3 - 2 Bandon
This game started at a very high pace in the sunshine of Youghal
with plenty of tough football being played by both teams. It was
the Bandon girls that started the better with the aid of the low
autumn sun to their backs.
Bandon broke the deadlock with a great pass that split the Youghal
defence, where the Bandon player gathered the ball half way
inside the Youghal half and left the defence for dead. She then shot
from the edge of the box and curled a blistering shot past the
Youghal goalie giving her no chance.
This gave Bandon great heart and they piled on the pressure and
this pressure eventually paid off when they won a penalty 10 min-
utes before the break. Up stepped Becky Barrett of Bandon to
show strong nerves in front of the large Youghal support to slot the
ball past the Youghal keeper to give the Bandon girls a 2 - 0 lead.
Bandon looked comfortable at this stage but the Youghal girls kept
working hard and this hard work paid off a few minutes before
half time when Gemma Lyons broke through the Bandon defence
to pull one back to make it 2 - 1 at half time.

The second half started with Youghal making a tactical change
going 3-4-3 and looking for the win. They started the half well
with Lisa O’Sullivan getting into some very good shooting posi-
tions only to see her efforts go wide and one hit the post. However
on 20 minutes the Youghal pressure paid off when Lisa O’Sullivan
took a shot that had a slight deflection to go past the helpless
Bandon keeper to make it 2 all.
After this both teams were battling for the win and when Gemma
Lyons won the ball inside the Bandon box she was taken down
from behind and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the
penalty. Up stepped Lisa O’ Sullivan to score what was to prove to
be the winner with 10 minutes to go. The Youghal girls had to bat-
tle hard to survive the late pressure from a gallant Bandon team to
hold on for a deserved win.
Best for Youghal were Lisa O’Sullivan, Aisling Coleman, Kate
Sheehan and Bianne Roche. But this was truly a great team effort
to turn around a very tough battle.

COMHALTAS AGM
The annual general meeting of Craobh Eochaille Comhaltas
Ceolt ir ireann will take place on Thursday 23rd October at
8.30pm at Brœ na S Cultural Centre.
Comhaltas Ceolt ir ireann is an international organisation that
promotes Irish traditional music, song and dance. The Youghal
branch is recognised as one of the strongest in the world and the
senior performing group Ceolta S has made a number of interna-
tional trips including two recent trips to China. At the core of the
branch is the education of young musicians and dancers from east
Cork and west Waterford.
It promises to be a busy weekend for the branch as they welcome
a visiting group from their sister branch, Amergin the Gael in
Wales. Ceolta S previously visited Cardiff where they received
great hospitality. There will be a number of sessions and work-
shops over the weekend. On Sunday 26th October there will be a
special concert at The Mall Arts Centre featuring various groups
from Youghal Comhaltas, Amergin the Gael and another visiting
group from Britain, Cœlra.
Cœlra is an initiative within Comhaltas Ceolt ir ireann in
Britain. It takes the form of a standard annual programme of active
experiential learning in Irish culture and history for members of
the organisation, especially young members, who have no other
access to the background of the musical heritage they have
received. While in Ireland the group will attend an tOireachtas in
Cork city and have included a visit to the Youghal branch in their
schedule.

Ciara both won bronze individual medals.

The second day of the Championships took place in Carrignavar
on 12th October. It was dry but very foggy but luckily enough the
fog cleared in time for the first race. Our U/9 Girls team of Aine
O Regan, Erin Hughes and Victoria Gyurka started the day with
very good runs from all these girls who are all very new to run-
ning. Unfortunately the girls were short for a team as Niamh
Buckley has been very sick over the last few days.
The under 11 Girls had a big team of 9 as the under 10s were run-
ning up also. Jennifer Hennessy had a tremendous race to become
County Champion. She was followed by Emily O Keefe in 3rd
place. Both of these girls got individual medals. Niamh Bernard
came 7th narrowly missing out on anindividual medal. She was
followed by Rchel Dunne in 9th place, Rachel Geary 20th, Diarmuid Clancy and Fearghal Curtin Claudette Kelly and Niamh O Regan
Laura Whyte 33rd, Fidelma Flavin 40th, Catherine Broderick 53td
and Niamh Hughes 60th. The girls won the County Championship
team prize in great style.
The Boys U/11 race was a thriller with Fearghal Curtin and Adam
Buckley of W. Muskerry battling it out from the half -way mark.
Fearghal got the edge in the last 50 metres and became County
Champion. Diarmuid Clancy put in another tremendous perform-
ance finishing in 3rd place and running up an age. Conor Forde
had a great race to finish in 26th place and is showing great
improvement this season. Padraig McCarthy finished in 40th
place and Jack O Rourke in 43rd place. The lads were very
unlucky to miss out in bronze medals missing by only 9 points.
The U/13 Girls team was mainly made up of under 12 girls run-
ning up an age namely Heather Curley 19th, Ciara Flavin 35th,

BULB PLANTING
On Monday October 6th there was a lot of hustle and bustle going
on on the Breton Road coming into Youghal.
The young students of the Transition year at Pobalscoil na
Trionoide, Youghal s Community School, have come together
with Youghal Tidy Towns to enhance and beautify the town.
Transition Year students get great opportunities to try out lots of
different things that they wouldn t normally do in an academic
year and among those is community service. This year the stu-
dents will be collaborating with Youghal Tidy Towns by planting
up spring flowering bulbs in tubs all around the town right up to
the top of the Lighthouse Hill.
This is a great way to get the youth involved in respecting the
environment and becoming more aware of the negative impact of
rubbish comments Pat McLoughlin, the TY co-ordinator at
Pobalscoil it not only teaches them a little bit of horticulture but
at the same time they are contributing to the local community .
This bright idea came from Ned Brennan, Chairman of Tidy
Towns, in the hope of eventually setting up a Junior Tidy Towns
Section we need to get the youth more involved, they are the
future and they have lots of great ideas says Ned who has been
involved in Tidy Towns for more years that he cares to remember.
I love the town of Youghal and I m sure that one day soon we
could be the overall Tidiest Town. This year we won Category B
in Cork County Council Litter League which was a great boost for
us but I m sure, I m almost positive, that with more people
involved we can go all the way to the top and be the overall win-
ner of Tidy Towns
For the students, there will be three prizes to be won in the Spring
for the prettiest and best kept tubs. The students will be responsi-
ble for watering, weeding and general maintenance of the tubs
throughout the winter months. And who knows, perhaps by the
Spring, there will be a few candidates lined up to start our very
first Junior Tidy Towns, lets keep our fingers crossed.

and die, even at being 3-0 down at the break.A great comeback by
them in the second half had the home team having to pull out all
the stops to keep the scoreline from getting any closer.Charlie
Bryan in the Ardmore goal was a busy lad and had to be well awake
on more than one occasion towards the end of the match, the fad-
ing Autumn light only adding to his load.Match over and as all
headed off home the sun was setting west of Ardmore and treating
us all to one of the most perfect sunsets I’ve seen in a long time.A
nice end to what had been a good day at the offfice for the Mories.

these things in a corner by yourself, why not get some friends and
family together and host the event? That way, you can subtly point
out to all of your guests the many items that you need in your
house that would coincidentally make great Christmas gifts. So

Set a budget for food and decorations

Figure out exactly much you need before heading to the store - this
way you won’t come away with 20 bags of miniature marshmal-
lows and a battery-operated belly-dancing Santa. Here’s the way to
do it:
Write down everything you definitely want to have and estimate a
reasonable cost next to it. Include everything from chip dip to
poinsettias.
Always overprice when in doubt. If you think hot chocolate mix
costs between 2.00 to 3.00 a box, mark it down as 3.00. This
way, you won’t be caught without enough money at the supermar-
ket.
After you’ve made up your list, total the cost of all your items, and
add another 10% to the price. Don’t forget the paper napkins, plas-
ticware, and extra toilet paper.
If the budget comes out to be way over what you expected to
spend, critically revise your list. (Do you really need to personal-
ize each guest’s paper cup?)
Expect to spend about 100 on food and drink alone-more if
you’re entertaining more than ten people, and a lot more if you’re
planning to have a party where people might get, shall we say,
"sloshed" on the eggnog.
Once you’re at the supermarket, don’t buy anything that’s not on
the list, unless it’s something important that you forgot. Impulse
buys are the bane of a good budget.

YOUGHAL U12 HURLERS PLAY IN CROKE PARK
On Sat 4th October 2008 Youghal u12 hurlers travelled to Croke
Park to take part in an u12s hurling tournament. It was a big day
for these young players as they joined an exclusive group of those
that have graced the hallowed turf of GAA headquarters.

Missionaries of Charity
A total of 1317.29 was raised in a cake sale held on Sunday 5th
October 2008, in the Holy Family Hall, Youghal. The money
raised is in aid of Missionaries of Charity, Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania. The Mother Teresa nuns run a home for abandoned chil-
dren, physically and mentally disabled youth, sick and destitute
elderly people and they plan to use this money to buy nappies and
milk for the children.
The O’Shea family of the Ferrypoint, Youghal have been helping
there since July and when they were returning to Ireland in
September they asked the nuns how they could help. The nuns
asked for money to buy nappies and milk and the proceeds of the
cake sale have been lodged directly to the nuns account. A big
thank you to all those who helped in any way especially all the
bakers and of course those who supported the cake sale which was
a sell out. Thank you all very much.

COMMUNITY BUS of planned events. The group is seeking registration as a charity

The Youghal Community Transport Group Chairperson, Tony
Phelan has hit upon an idea that could change the social lives of
many in the town of Youghal. Tony is hoping to raise funds for a
community bus that he envisages will benefit the most vulnerable
members of the community. Like all good ideas, Tony’s was con-
ceived from his own life experience. It was while contemplating
the difficulties of transporting his own son that the plight of others
in similar circumstance enlightened him to the possibility of a
solution. Once the seed of the idea was set, it grew to include a
multitude of community members. Tony explained. Anyone who
is disabled or has a disabled person in the family knows how dif-
ficult it is to move around. A community bus would benefit other
people as well. A lot of people can’t afford to get from A to B.
Older people could keep in contact with each other. Social integra-

Area Development. The Group’s commitment to securing a com-
munity bus for Youghal is highlighted by how quickly Tony’s ini-
tial idea has turned into action. The business plan is as far as the
commercial aspect goes. This will be a non-profit organisation
with all proceeds going back into the running costs of the bus.
This venture has its community at heart. The disadvantaged, peo-
ple with disabilities, old age pensioners need to mix with society.
It makes a big difference just being able to meet. It’s about quali-
ty of life, he concluded.
Tony would like to express his thanks to the organising commit-
tee for all their help and support as this is a totally volountary ven-

tion is very important. It gives people independence. Our immedi-
ate aim is to service the town but in the future we might be able to
go on outings, not just for the elderly or disabled but for the youth
of the town as well.
Tony believes that supplying a freedom of movement to the disad- Transport Group

energy to the lives of many, as well as improving self esteem. The
group was set up a number of weeks ago and Tony remarked on
how quickly their aims are beginning to take shape. So far we

various agencies and we can see the demand. In the couple of
months since we formed the group it has become clear that people
felt this is a very good idea. It was only when we talked about it
that we realised how many groups in the community would bene-
fit from this, he said.

and the group has been proactive in its search for ways to move
