Parkgate Primary School’s junior choir have sung at the ‘Voice in a

The concert was organised in order to raise awareness for

They sang songs such as ‘Lean on Me’, ‘I’ll be there’ ‘You raise me

In the news
Neston in the festive spirit
Now in its third year, the 2010 Neston Christmas Festival really does have something
for everyone. Running until 21st December, the programme of events is the biggest
yet, and includes everything from Ice Sculpture to Murder Mystery!
The headline event takes place on the evening of Friday 3rd December when Neston
will see the switching on of a new Christmas lighting scheme, including, for the first
time in over 15 years, a Christmas Tree at the Cross. A Lantern Procession through
the town will be led by the Mayor of Neston, Cllr David Clark, who will switch on the
lights just after 6.30pm. Elsewhere in the Festival Programme visitors and residents
will find theatre, Christmas fairs, concerts, crafts for children and, in something of a
departure from the norm, ‘Murder in the Library’ – an evening of sleuthing and festive
fun at Neston Library. Plus, for the second year running there will be a Christmas Ice
Sculpture located outside the Parish Church. See page 18 for events list.

Police get a kick out of helping pupils!

POLICE in Neston have joined forces with local primary schools in a football-based
initiative.
The Hat-trick project is designed to encourage team-building, confidence and social
awareness. The scheme is organised by Neston Town Council, Neston Parish Church
and the Community Development Team of Tranmere Rovers Football Club. It will
include football training and one-to-one talks for pupils who will most benefit from that
approach.

Budget to ensure that
residents could enjoy spending more time together in communal areas with the large-
screen television, rather than sitting alone.
Cllr Dowding, said: “There are many occasions when being able to watch programmes
together could be a much more convivial and enjoyable experience, rather than having
to retreat to their own rooms. However, because of the poor quality of the television this
type of community activity wasn’t previously possible.
“I was delighted that, through my member’s budget, I was able to purchase a large
and up-to-date television that will bring pleasure to so many of the older people living at
Hallwood Court.
“It it really pleasing that residents can now get together whenever they like to enjoy
watching television together with their friends.”
Members Budget Grants of £5000 are allocated to each councillor at the beginning of
each financial year and must be used within a ward for community benefit.
Any community group, organisation or individual can apply to their local councillor for
aid with funding for a project. Grants must be in excess of £250.

Burton & Neston History Society

On 4th November the Society held a talk in Neston Town Hall by Anthony
Annakin - Smith “The Slave Ships of Parkgate and Neston”. Due to demand this
was the second local holding of this talk, which was well researched and told
of the slave trade and of boats built here and used for it, with the involvement
of local families. It was very well attended and a collection raised £204. With the
assistance of Marcus Torchon from Haiti, the Methodist minister for Neston, Little
Neston and Bromborough, this will go towards the rebuilding of the Leveque
School, which was destroyed in the Haiti earthquake

Willaston market continues to thrive

Country Markets have been in business for
many years, allowing individual producers to
sell their home-made, home-grown and hand
crafted items locally direct to the public.
For over 30 years, Willaston Country Market
has operated every Friday morning in the
Memorial Hall on the Village Green from
9-11am.
All goods are produced by the members
themselves. They sell a host of sumptuous
freshly-baked cakes, pastries and savouries,
farm fresh eggs, wholesome jams, chutneys
and relishes. The range of produce,
particularly plants, flowers, fruit and fresh
vegetables, varies according to the season. A
variety of hand made greeting cards together
with knitted goods are also available.

I get a little behind during Lent, but it comes out even at Christmas - Frank Butler
The best present you can give
your pet this Christmas…
Where did 2010 go? Christmas is just around the corner
and it’s time to start thinking about Christmas presents once
more. So where do our pets fit into this festive scene? Pets
just don’t think about Christmas in the same way that we
do, but there’s no reason at all why they should not benefit.
What I’m saying is that indulging them with a cheap toy, or a
digestion upsetting treat - or even a feast, is most unwise. The
cheap toy is, at best, likely to be quickly destroyed and at worst might
be swallowed. I won’t go into the consequences of that! The one off
treat or feast frequently leads to a trip to the vet shortly after Xmas to
sort out a very dodgy tummy!
So, let’s be constructive and put your pet’s healthcare first this festive
season. Every dog and cat should visit the vet annually for vaccinations
to keep them protected against disease. If you’re a rabbit owner, don’t
forget that they will need a vaccination every six months.”
As well as vaccinations, it is really important that your pet is also
protected against fleas and worms and this should be carried out regularly throughout the year, not just in the warmer months. We
have a variety of flea and worm products available to suit your pet and your pocket.
By providing your pet with the essential preventative care health package, you will be giving him the best Christmas present ever.
Ask yourself if your pet is fully up to date with vaccinations and flea and worming prevention? Our practice statistics show that few
pets are completely up to date with all of this. So, my suggestion for Christmas 2010 is that
you should bring all your pets up to date on their vaccination, flea and worming programme.
Now that would be a Christmas present!
For those owners who have adult pets whose vaccinations have now lapsed, please see our
advert and take advantage of 10% off a re-vaccination course.

BOOK REVIEWS:
CHRISTMAS BUYS
BY ELEANOR DAVIES, FROM LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Fiction: February – Lisa Moore

If you’re looking for a good novel to give someone for Christmas why not try this
one?
Its main character, Helen O’Mara, was one of those left behind when her
husband died in the Ocean Ranger oil rig disaster in 1982. Her story starts years
after the event but she is compelled to travel back to the February (of the title)
that persists in her mind and to the moment, when, expecting her fourth child,
she received the call informing her that her husband has been lost at sea. 25
years later she receives another phone call from that same fourth child, a son,
to say he has made a girl pregnant and he wants his mother’s help. As son John
grapples with what it might mean to be father, Helen realises she must shake off
her decades of mourning in order to help. The novel takes us through the whole
story of her loss and how she has survived, culminating in the moment when the
oil rig goes down and Helen begins to emerge from her grief to meet a new life.
A beautiful, although at times harrowing novel, February is poignant, gently
amusing and heart warming. Highly recommended.

Autobiography: I must collect Myself- Maureen Lipman

This sparkling collection of stories, reminiscences and jokes, interspersed with
original and inventive monologues introduces us to all kinds of unforgettable
characters. There’s the excitable ‘wannabe’ auditioning in ‘Brittney’s Got Talent’,
Sheila the unintentionally smutty art tutor, the bitter American army wife suffering
in the Home Counties and many others, all illustrated with some wonderful
photographs of the author herself bringing her characters to life.
Maureen Lipman’s appeal lies in the fact that she is so normal and ordinary,
experiencing grief and happiness in the same ways that we do. Her talent is to
be able to collect those experiences and share them with us in a way which we
can recognize and identify with. A lovely warm and human book.

Local interest: Hoylake: A history of the Links- Anthony Shone

If you have a golf enthusiast in the family this is the book for him/her, beautifully
presented in a glossy hardback. It is the story of Hoylake Golf Course, taking
us through the early years when the course was first built (only 9 holes
initially!), through all sorts of changes and developments right istmas
up to the present day. There is a section on Merry Chr aders
l ou r re
to al
greenkeeping and ecology and an appendix on
the championships, all illustrated with stunning
colour photographs and sketches. A wonderful
book to keep and treasure.
