Face-to-Face Staff Development Workshop

Identification of Learning Problem

Problem Identification
Due to the sudden need for virtual learning tools, DeKalb County has rolled out Google
Classroom to all of their schools. Unfortunately, Henderson Middle School is unfamiliar with
this learning platform so they’d like to see all of the available features with this new resource.
Administrators are interested in a free staff development workshop on Google Classroom that
would show teachers how to utilize the tool in their virtual teaching. It would also allow the
admin team to make the best plan going forward if they want to keep using Classroom next year.

Learner Analysis
Henderson Middle School is in DeKalb County in Atlanta, Georgia and requires teachers to be
certified in their field of education. All of the teachers have a Bachelor’s degree, many of them
have a Master’s degree, and several have PhD’s. The students at Henderson Middle School
(HMS) range in age from eleven to fourteen years old and teachers are expected to keep up with
new content in their field and the ever-changing educational technology tools as well as stay
relevant to their students.

Instructional Goals
1. The learner will log in to their Google account and navigate to Google Classroom.
2. The learner will create classes, navigate to other classes, and move, edit, copy, or archive
classes as needed.
3. The learner will utilize the stream for quick posts, displaying the class code, and showing
upcoming work.
4. The learner will post assignments, quiz assignments, questions, and material as well as
reuse old posts and organize posts by topic.
5. The learner will change class details and notifications to suit their needs.
6. The learner will add collaborating teachers and invite or add students to the class.

Task Analysis
I, Katrina Poff, will be the subject matter expert for this unit with my experience in utilizing
Google Classroom with my own students as well as the two years I’ve spent working on a
Masters in Instructional Technology at Georgia Southern University. Since I work with Google
Classroom on a regular basis, I decided to use a procedural analysis to develop the content of my
face-to-face staff development workshop for Henderson Middle School. I went through the
motions of setting up my own classes, creating assignments, adding people, giving grades, etc. I
attempted to look at it as if I knew nothing about Classroom, which allowed me to easily create a
task analysis outline for the learners to follow. After I created the outline, I followed the steps
myself to ensure they made sense and I hadn’t left anything out.

Prerequisites for the Google Classroom workshop include being able to log in to a computer,
navigate to a given website, and understand the concept of learning platforms. Each teacher
daily uses a computer for their work and utilizes Henderson’s learning platform so it is assumed
they have already mastered the necessary prerequisites.

Instructional Design Summary

Normally the staff development workshop would be given face-to-face during a level meeting or
school-wide faculty meeting. The learners would be watching a Google Slides presentation
while following along with the steps on their own computers. I believe a hands-on approach is
usually best when learning a new resource or tool. Under the current circumstances, I will be
using Zoom to share my presentation with a limited number of participants. Since the learners
will be watching my presentation on their computer, they’re not likely to be able to do each step
with me. I will share my screen on the Zoom session and demonstrate how to complete each
aspect of Classroom but they will have to practice on their own afterward. This makes it
imperative that my Slides presentation and tutorial video fully explain all of the important
features. I will also be making my online workshop Google Site available to them so they can
access any additional resources they may find useful.

Program Evaluation
In order to determine if the learners have successfully understood the concept of Google
Classroom, they will complete an assessment on Quizizz about different aspects of the learning
platform (Appendix A). Learners will also give feedback about my presentation by answering a
few questions on Google Forms (Appendix B). I will analyze both sets of data to determine if
any adjustments should be made to the content of the presentation as well as the method of
delivery. These adjustments will help improve the online version of this workshop as well as
other face-to-face workshops in the future.
