4. Procedures
4.1 Introductory Activity Review of previous topic
3 minutes
4.2 Activity Do you still remember what an isosceles triangle is? In
5 minutes a group of 5 members will present in front their ideas and knowledge about isosceles triangle.
4.3 Analysis An isosceles triangle is a triangle that has at least two congruent sides. The congruent sides of the
isosceles triangle are called the legs. The other side is called the base. The angles between the base and
the legs are called base angles. The angle made by the two legs is called the vertex angle. A triangle is
isosceles if two of its sides are congruent. The congruent sides are its legs; the third side is the base; the
angles opposite the congruent sides are the base angles; and the angle included by the legs is the vertex
angle. Consider ∆TMY with TM

4.4 Abstraction Isosceles Triangle Theorem: If two sides

of a triangle are congruent, then the angles opposite these sides are congruent.
Is the converse of the isosceles
triangle theorem true? Justify your answer. If two angles of a
triangle are congruent, then the sides opposite these angles are congruent.
Isosceles Triangle Theorem: If two sides

Example:
Measuring Vertex Angles
If an isosceles triangle has base angles with measures of 47°, what is the measure of the
vertex angle?
Draw a picture and set up an equation to solve for the vertex angle, v.

47 + 47 + v = 180
v v = 180-47-47
v = 86°

Example:
Base Angles
If an isosceles triangle has a vertex angles with measures of 116°, what is the measure of
the base angle?
Draw a picture and set up an equation to solve for the base angle, b.

116 + b116
+ b = 180
2b = 180 - 116
2b = 64
b = 32°

4.5 Application Exercise 9 (Group Activity) Discuss with

your group the proof of the statement: An equilateral triangle is equiangular. Use the figure and be guided
by the questions below. Given: ∆MIS is equilateral
Prove: ∆MIS is equiangular
1. MI MS. Why?
2. What kind of triangle is ∆MIS? 3.
What angles
≅ are congruent? Why?
4. MI MS. Why?
5. What angles are congruent? Why?
15 minutes How will you show that each
angle of

Questions: a.
What is the sum of the measures of the angles of a triangle? b.
What is≅true about equilateral
