complete lockdown on Wednesday,
March 25, at 11:59 p.m. as a
response to Level 4 of New Zealand’s four-
level COVID-19 alert system - culminating a
five-day preparatory process started by Prime
Minister Jacinda Ardern.  set aside for the aviation sector as part of the

Monday, March 23: PM escalates Alert
Level-3 
With 102 cases in New Zealand, the Prime
Level 3 of the four-stage alert system and

interim visa will be issued to them.
Travellers whose temporary visas

prominent charity organisations
within our Kiwi-Indian community
like Bhartiya Samaj, Shanti Niwas,
Women Care Trust and many more
over the phone, who might be able
to assist you through during this
physical-distancing period in a
more culturally appropriate manner.

Final list of
‘Essential and
Non-essential
services’

arlier on Monday, March 23,
government announced the first list of
essential and non-essential services for
the lockdown period.
“Lockdown now means, all non-essential
services to close down for four weeks,
schools to shut down with limited travelling
opportunities. Essential Services Pharmacies,
doctors, supermarkets, service stations to
remain open during the lockdown along with
essential banking services and non-essential
services such as cafes, bars, restaurants,
cinemas etc. to be shut down. All public venues
to close down too,” government announced on
Monday.
But, even after the list released on the
government website, there remained questions
and doubts as to some other businesses if they
are essential service or not, following which
they will have to make operational calls.
Some of the businesses that were hanging on
the updated list and decisions of the government
were the retail chair The Warehouse, dairy
stores, liquor stores, Asian grocery stores.
After much deliberation the government
ministers on late Tuesday, March 24, met and
finally provided further guidance on essential
services that can continue to operate during the
lockdown period, starting Thursday March 26,
for the next four weeks at least.
MBIE Deputy Chief Executive Paul Stocks
said the purpose of escalating New Zealand’s
COVID-19 alert level to 4 was to stop the virus
in its tracks and reduce contact between people.
“That’s why we need as many businesses as
possible to close their premises now if our one
shot at beating the virus is to be successful,” Mr
Stocks said.
“Only the businesses absolutely essential to
ensure the necessities of life, like supermarkets
and pharmacies, can stay open. If in doubt, the
business premises should be closed.
“So unfortunately, the Warehouse needs
to close its shops. Leaving them open to the
general public creates too high a risk of further
spreading the virus.
Mr Stocks said “big box” retailers like
Bunnings, Placemakers and Mitre 10 can stay
open to trade customers for essential purposes
only.
“These retailers play an important part in the
construction supply chain, but they cannot sell
goods to the general public.”
Businesses that are a critical part of the
supply chain for essential services are also able
to continue operating but must do so in a way
that is safe.
“For example, if you make chemicals that are
needed for our wastewater plants, then we need
you to keep operating at the minimum level
required.”
In addition, dairies can
continue to operate,
but must observe strict
physical distancing rules for
customers.
“Dairies provide basic food items like bread

especially the elderly who may not be able to
get to a supermarket. However, they will need

night, Viljoen says he is disappointed

and snacks to them.

few weeks as this crisis grew, has
been to ensure that Fiji Airways
survives in a world where many other
airlines will not, to save jobs when
many are already letting people go.

Bainimarama stresses that self-
quarantine isn’t a voluntary measure.
He says it is not simply a “nice
thing to do”.
The Prime Minister says it is a
compulsory, legally-mandated order,
and these Fijians will be investigated.
Bainimarama has also made
it clear that if necessary, they
will be arrested, charged and
punished accordingly.

COVID-19: 5th case in Fiji confirmed by PM

31-year-old woman from Lautoka is
the 5th confirmed COVID-19 case in
Fiji.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says
their contact tracing team confirms that the
woman attended a Zumba class with the
27-year-old flight attandant who was the first
confirmed COVID-19 case in Fiji and while he
was already displaying the symptoms.
Bainimarama says all members of that
Zumba class were directed to self-quarantine
the same day the first patient was diagnosed,
the 19th of March. They were each instructed to
immediately alert the Health Ministry medical
teams if they began developing symptoms.
Yesterday, four days into compulsory self-
quarantine, the 31-year-old woman, began
displaying symptoms.
Fiji has confirmed our fifth case of
#COVID19, another direct contact of our first
patient. She is 31-year-old woman who first
developed symptoms while self-quarantined.
The average age of our 5 cases is just 27.
Anyone at any age can be a carrier. We must all
remain vigilant.
During their Zumba class, she worked out
in close proximity with the first patient and
shared a hug. When she later recognised her
symptoms, she notified the ministry’s rapid
response medical teams, who securely and
hygienically transported her via ambulance to
the isolation ward at Lautoka Hospital. She was
tested.
Bainimarama says the woman shares a
household with nine others –– two of whom
were also showing symptoms and have been
isolated in Lautoka Hospital.
The other seven remain under strict
quarantine in the home, which is under constant
police surveillance.

• Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss the cubed sweet potato
with 1 tablespoon olive oil and arrange in a single
layer on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake
for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until
sweet potato is tender and browned at the edges.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool before
transferring to a large bowl.

Women in this era have sometimes sacrificed they’re well-
being and mortality to meet standards of beauty. Women of the
past had used odd and horrible things to look their best and this
had been a norm back then.
Risk-taking beauty antics have been implanted in us since
ancient times, it’s a learned trait from centauries of trying
to perfect ourselves. A dangerous pattern it indeed is- we as
women still take risks to look beautiful. Will explore some of
the dangerous trends that had been a norm in the past.
Corsets
C orsets are still part of the fashionable trend even in the
millennium, But they are not as bad as the previous epoch,
