Cyberbullying – A Global Perspective

My pain may be the reason for somebody's laugh. But my laugh must never be the reason for somebody's pain.
– Charlie Chaplin

This quotation by Charlie Chaplin is my favorite for the very simple reason that hurting anybody for any reason
is not humane at all.

Good Morning to all present. Respected Judges, teachers and my dear friends, I ‘Radhe Arora’ today will speak
on the topic “Cyberbullying – A Global Perspective”. I have to say very sadly that in today’s scenario
cyberbullying has become very common and is being exercised widely all over the world.

Firstly let’s see what is Cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is when a child or teen becomes a target of actions by others – using computers, cellphones or
other devices – that are intended to embarrass, humiliate, or threaten. It can damage a young person's self-
esteem, reputation and mental health.

Now let’s see some of the common ways that how cyberbullying is taking place among the children:

 Taking an embarrassing picture or video of others and posting it online.

 Spreading embarrassing rumours, secrets or gossip about another person through social networking sites
or email.
 Hacking someone's email account or social networking account and sending hurtful content to others.
 Issuing online threats provoking an individual to kill himself or hurt someone else
 Creating a fake or nasty webpage about another individual

Now let’s see some facts about this global issue

According to a research, nearly 8 out of 10 individuals are subject to the different types of cyberbullying. Out of
these around 63% face online abuses and insults, and 59% are subject to false rumors and gossips for degrading
their image. The same study ranks India as the country facing the highest cyber bullying in the Asia Pacific
region, more than Australia and Japan.

Now we will see how we can prevent such a big problem i.e. cyberbullying:

 As a parent, it is your responsibility to be aware of your child’s online activities.

 Be cognizant of the apps and digital media that your child is using.
 Ensure that your child is not getting addicted to computers, online gaming, and smartphones.
 Gently engage your ward in a conversation and try to understand what is happening.
 Immediately register a complaint with the police or you can send your complaint to complaint-
mwcd@gov.in.

In the end I would like to say that Children should be able to live a life free from cyberbullying and harassment
and it is time that we all should take a stand against this.

I hope the information given by me through this presentation would be fruitful for everyone present over here.
Thanks for listening me patiently. Thank you…
