On a Career Pathway

This is Malik Nassar. He came to the U.S. a year ago.

He had a high school diploma but he didn't know
a lot of English. Now Malik is a food preparation worker
in his uncle’s restaurant. He works in the kitchen
and helps the cooks.

Malik spoke to his uncle and said,

“I like this kind of work. Can I become

a cook too?”
His uncle answered, “It’s good that you want to move ahead.
But you have to learn more about cooking and get more work experience.
I can help you with this. And a career counselor can help you plan a career
pathway. “

Malik went to a career counselor and told her that he wants to become a
cook. The counselor answered, “That’s a good idea. There are many jobs
in this field. You can work in restaurants, cafeterias and other places. Some
cooks become restaurant owners. But you first have to improve your English.”
Malik is starting to plan his career pathway. His short-term goal is to
become a cook. His uncle is helping him with this. Malik is also going to
take courses to improve his English. Malik’s long-term goal is to own a
restaurant one day. He can achieve this goal in the future.
