Transport in Plants

A. Complete the chart by writing a strategy to help you remember the meaning of each term. One
has been done for you.

Adhesion Attraction between unlike molecules Think about how tape adheres, or
sticks, to paper.

Capillary action The tendency of water to rise in a thin tube

Nutrient Transport
Sugar moves through phloem in plants. Active transport moves sugars into the sieve tube from
surrounding tissues. Water then follows by osmosis. This creates pressure in the tube at the source
of the sugars. If another part of the plant needs sugars, they are pumped out of the tube and into
the surrounding tissue.

Follow the directions.

1. Draw arrows to show how sugar moves through the phloem. Arrows that represent the
movement of water have already been drawn for you.
