INTRODUCTION

1. Meaning is not new as a concept since it lies beneath all the actions
human do, and all what they say.
2. Hence the study of meaning is not new, but it accompanies the
development of human civilization
3. Studying meaning in the ancient time was associated with philosophy
4. Later on studying and analyzing meaning become a major interest of
linguistics
DEFINITON OF SEMANTIC

Semantics is the field of the study language dealing with the conventional or literal meaning of words or
sentences and the relation between those meaning and between linguistic expression and denotation
(Bianchi,2004).

Semantics is the study of meaning that can be determined form a sentence, a phrase and a word.
DEFINITON OF PRAGMATIC

Pragmatic is the study of speaker meaning.

Pragmatics is the study of the meaning in context and it deals with implied meaning as opposed to
the mere lexical meaning expressed.

It is the study of contextual meaning and how more gets communicated than it said
SIMILARITIES BETWEEN SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS

The two members of linguistics, semantics and pragmatics, can deal with the meaning of language and connect
language to the world. Each member deals with meaning differently; but, many students of linguistics confuse
the two terms.

The only similarity between the two, is that they both deal with the meaning of words and sentences, but in
different ways.

The fields of pragmatics and semantics are related to one another. As an example, some categories in semantics
require the application of pragmatics in order to have a satisfactory interpretation. Deictic words, for instance,
take some elements of their meanings from the context in which they are uttered.

Example:
The pronoun “she” cannot be fully interpreted unless we know to who the pronoun refers to.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS
SEMANTICS:

Semantics is the study of meaning. A lot of study areas related to language is covered. Semantics help in getting a
sense of meaning in context to writers, speakers, readers of learners. It also helps in known that how the meanings
got change over a period of time. It is concerned with the conceptual meaning related to words. Semantics deals with
the meaning according to vocabulary and grammar, it does not focus on the context. The focus is only on the general
rules used for a language.

PRAGMATICS:

Pragmatics is all about questions of use, whereas Semantics is all about question of meaning. It deals with that aspect
of meaning which is dependent on the context. Semantics deals with the sudy of what signs indicate while
Pragmatics deals with the relation of signs to their users and interpreters.
Key Difference:

Semantics deals with the study of meaning of word without the context while Pragmatics understands the language
meaning but, keeping the context of the word in mind.
CONCLUSION
Semantics and
pragmatics have some
similarities
Semantics and
pragmatics are both
sub-branches in the
field of linguistics. Semantics and
pragmatics have
interface between
them.
Semantics and
pragmatics have some
differences.
