Syllabus for Entrance Test in M.Sc.

Biotechnology

1. Microbiology (Basic)

History, development and scope of microbiology; general characteristics of


micro-organisms; structural and reproductive diversity, classification and
economic importance of bacteria; general characteristics of actinomycetes,
cyanobacteria, mycoplasma, fungi and algae. Biochemical and immunological
characterization of microbes; general account of Rickettsiae, viruses,
Chlamydiae; microbial associations, microbial ecosystem, microbial growth;
microbiology of air, water and soil. Biological N2-fixation. Genetics and regulation
of N2 – fixation, hydrogen metabolism, cyanophages.

2. Microbiology (Applied)

Industrial microbiology: Use of microbes in fermentation, production of


antibiotics, enzymes, organic acids, alcohol and vitamins; biofertilizer,
lignocellulose bioconversion; mycorrhizae; biopesticides, integrated pest
management, quarantine; sewage treatment, bio-remediation biogas generation;
microbes from extreme environment, single cell protein, microbial toxins and
human health.

3. Biochemistry

General introduction, scope & importance of biochemistry. Water and it’s


biological significance; structure, classification and biological importance of
carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes, vitamins, steroids,
pigments and hormones; chemical equilibrium, biological transport process;
biosynthesis of carbohydrates in animal tissues, glycogen metabolism and
genetic defects, regulation of lactose synthesis; metabolism of lipids / nucleic
acids , proteins; mechanism of enzyme action, kinetics; oxidation of fatty acids
in animal tissues, its regulation and inhibition, amino acid catabolism, urea cycle,
genetic defects, glycogenesis, glycogenolysis and gluconeogensis etc.
4. Cytogenetics , Molecular Biology & Biotechnology

Ultra-structure of the generalized eukaryotic cell and cell organelles; cell


division, chromosome structure, special types of chromosomes, modern concepts
of gene, linkage and crossing over, mendelism, interaction of genes, extra
chromosomal inheritance, gene mutation; DNA structure and replication, RNA
structure and types, protein biosynthesis, gene expression and regulation-operon
concept, central dogma, gene mutation, DNA damage and repair; scope and
importance of genetic engineering and biotechnology, plasmids, cosmids,
vectors, gene cloning, gene transfer and recombinant DNA technology,
application in agriculture, medicine and industry, microbes as tools in
biotechnology; somatic hybridization, protoplast fusion.

5. Immunology

Basic concepts of immunity, antigen, antibodies, immunological


techniques, immune response to tumor cells, bacterial, viral, fungal immunology,
immunoprophylaxis, immunotherapy.

6. Basic and Modern Techniques in Biology

Chromatography, electrophoresis, centrifugation, electron microscopy ,


fluorescence microscopy, phase contrast microscopy, NMR spectroscopy,
spectrophotometry, colorimetry, isolation, preservation, improvement of
microbial cultures, microbial growth kinetics, stains, DNA sequencing &
fingerprinting, PCR, blotting techniques, fermentors, bioreactors, immobilization,
basic concepts on plant and animal tissue culture.

7. Physiology and Metabolism of plants

Water relation and mineral nutrition in plants; metabolism and


bioenergetics- respiratory metabolisms, photosynthesis; plant growth and
development.
8. Biology of Higher Plants

Concepts of biodiversity, endangered plant species, conservation,


ethnobotany, taxonomic characters and medicinal importance of angiospermic
plants.

9. Environmental Biology

Basic concept, factors, ecosystem, energy flow, food chains, recycling of


matters, Ecological types, succession, pollution, green belt designing, dryland
farming, social and agroforestry, metal prospecting, biodiversity etc.

10. Biostatistics and computer applications

Theorems of probability, measurement of central tendencies and


dispersion, t and X2 tests, basic structure and functioning of computers,
application of computer in biology. basic concept of bioinformatics.
