CAESAR’s Body

REPORTER REPORTER

1 2

Citizen
(ANTONY, CASSIUS, BRUTUS standing in front of CAESAR’s body.)

(Enter REPORTERS)

REPORTERS – Ave!!

(ANTONY, CASSIUS, BRUTUS nodes.)

BRUTUS (taking one step) – What brings thou, noblemen?

REPORTER 1 – The news that CAESAR, the noblest, royal and powerful, was assassinated
mesmerizes us.

REPORTER 2 – We come, not to seek revenge, but to know the cause of this. To know why thou
wrong the dead!!

BRUTUS – Noblemen, please don’t think us conspirators for we only intend to liberate Rome
from tyranny.

REPORTER 1 – No, BRUTUS. First we’ll have a word with ANTONY.

REPORTER 2 – MARK ANTONY, explain CAESAR’s death.

ANTONY- I came to fetch CAESAR to the Senate House. But O bloody sight! There it was, lying
on the floor, CAESAR’s corpse. O CAESAR, dost thou so low? I asked for some reason……….
Some reason for this sin but all I got to know is that he was ambitious. So I pledged that I will
avenge for flowing of this costly blood.

REPORTER 1 – Is it? BRUTUS, thou speak.

(BRUTUS doesn’t say anything for a moment)

REPORTER 2 – BRUTUS, what thou will say?

BRUTUS – Noblemen, I saw CAESAR becoming ambitious and for the sake of Rome, I slew him.
As CAESAR loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I
honor him; but, as he was ambitious, I slew him.

(Enter CALPURNIA)

CALPURNIA – Yes, he slew CAESAR!! The noble CAESAR, the mighty CAESAR, the royal CAESAR,
they say. Though he was the most trustful of him, he stabbed him too.
(CALPURNIA starts to cry)

(ANTONY comes and tries to stop her from crying)

CASSIUS – Noblemen, we yield no thoughts of treachery for the noble ANTONY or others but
only for CAESAR, for he was ambitious. He was becoming selfish.

CALPURNIA – I told CAESAR not to go but he no more listen to me. Thrice in the night, I dreamt
of this……..but no, why should anyone listen to me.

(Suddenly CASCA and CITIZEN enters)

CASCA – I was just…um…passing and….I got to go.

REPORTER 2 – Wait, CASCA. Where thee going? Tell what did thou do? Were thou the first one
to stab CAESAR.

CASCA – Yes, gentlemen. CAESAR didn’t listen to METALLUS CIMBER’s pleading so I stabbed him
first, for he disappointed me.

ANTONY – CAESAR was stiff and confident as well. He punished PUBLIUS CIMBER with a very
heavy heart as he punished his beloved friend’s brother. He told me so, gentlemen.

CITIZEN – O Noble Caesar!!

(REPORTER 1 and REPORTER 2 both discuss in whispers and BRUTUS and CASSIUS eye-contact
each other)

REPORTER 1 – We come to a conclusion that CAESAR was done injustice as he denied the crown
and he left 75 drachmas for each and every man of Rome. Do we agree to that?

(ANTONY and CALPURNIA node in agreement)

REPORTER 2 – So be it. The conspirators will be punished.

CITIZEN (shouting) - Hear, hear, noblemen speaks for conspirators’ punishment!!

ANTONY (kneeling against the body of CAESAR) – Here CAESAR, I have taken your revenge and
now Rome will be liberal from tyranny.
