J. FUN FACTS
Medieval Castles: Using the many masonry advances that had been achieved during the time of the Roman Empire, castles
began to emerge during the 11th century. The Roman Empire had fallen and lawlessness was everywhere as bands of pagan
warriors roamed the countryside in search of treasure and land that they could steal. Castles, and the elaborate defense
mechanisms that surrounded them, became very popular. The castle was the ultimate status symbol for the few land lords
wealthy enough to build them. Castles represented power, wealth, and importance! A castle was more like a small town than a
private home: in times of war it could protect hundreds of people. Castles were often built on a hill or mound called a motte.
These mottes ranged in height from just 10 feet to over 100 feet tall and offered those within the castle an unobstructed view
of the countryside and any approaching enemies! A ditch was often build around the motte and served as the first line of
defense against intruders. The outer walls of the castle, called stockades, could be more than 20 feet tall and 10 feet thick! The
enclosed structure, called the citadel, sat atop the motte and offered an imposing, often awe-inspiring sight!

can do so with the glue provided. However, you may find it
difficult to move the castle due to its large size. It is a good idea to
ask an adult to get a piece of wooden board on which you can

the castle become a complete unit for moving. You can also decorate the wooden base with paint and landscape features (not

You may wish you enhance the stony look of the castle. Use the brush and grey paint provided to highlight the gaps between
bricks. You could also use the craving tool to deepen the natural wear and tear look of the castle walls. Use the glue to affix the

The
enclosed structure, called the citadel, sat atop the motte and offered an imposing, often awe-inspiring sight!

the castle become a complete unit for moving. You can also decorate the wooden base with paint and landscape features (not
